Madonna's album title, release date confirmed

Feb 26, 2008, 04:49 PM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: Music, Music Biz

Madonna_l The title of Madonna's forthcoming album will be Hard Candy, EW.com has learned exclusively. The record, her last studio effort for Warner Bros., includes a track called "Candy Store." Madonna chose to stick with the sweet theme because "she loves candy," says her longtime rep Liz Rosenberg. "It's about the juxtaposition of tough and sweetness, or as Madonna so eloquently expressed 'I'm gonna kick your ass, but it's going to make you feel good.'" The album, which features Justin Timberlake on multiple tracks and production by Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, and Nate "Danja" Hills, will see a U.S. release on April 29. The first single, "Four Minutes," will be out at the end of March.

After reading many of the postings people wrote, I am surprised how few people seem to really "get" her album title. C'mon people... use your imagination... madonna is kind of a sex freak, ya know, and there's one kind of hard candy that a girl never out grows... I am super psyched for the album. That song 4 minutes is awesome!

siennasona Mon, Apr 21, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Can you hear it online anywhere? I hope its good. Kinda the same route as Miriaha C.????

Dude, I can't wait for this album to come out. This has been one of the best singles that Madonna has come out with in a while. She is the bomb and she'll keep doing this till the day she dies.

m Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 11:14 AM EST

if she wasnt the biggest selling female artist in history then she wouldnt be relevant, but she is and thats why we have been talking about Madonna for almost 30 years.

joseph Sat, Mar 8, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

So exciting to see her back. I love the title and track listing sounds great. I am sure this album will be as hot and will define her like ray of light did 10 years! truly she is the queen. and i love candy too

Chris Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 03:54 AM EST

The fact that you’re all discussing her makes my point. At this junction, she can do whatever she wants, if a single doesn’t make the charts in the states, she can still rack up worldwide smashes, and every performance/tour continues to sell out and with her new deal with Live Nation she is again revolutionizing the way business is being done. I have heard Four Minutes and I Could be the Devil from Hard Candy and I can tell you I will be waiting in line for this new music and anyone who saw her Drowned World Reinvention or Confessions tours will tell you how she continues to teach today’s teen artists a thing or two about putting on an electrifying performance

I am speaking as someone who has followed the career of Madonna Louise Cicone since 1982. The first reviews for Madonna’s Début 12inch mixes Everybody and Burning Up
reflected the fact that her image wasn’t even used on the covers and that she was “Just another white girl trying to sound black” After the top 40 breakthrough with the hits Holiday, Borderline and Lucky Star in 83/84, Time Magazine in a cover story on Madonna quoted Mick Jagger as saying she sounded like “Minnie Mouse on Helium” I state these facts to illustrate that Madonna has withstood the narrow minded criticisms of the non-believers for twenty six years. Of all her contemporaries through the years, she is still a trend setter, an innovator and RELEVANT.

I wonder what type of hard candt she has for us? Something wonderful as always, can't wait for the release date!!!

Not That Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Madonna shouldn't have released some commercial crap in order to become popular again in the States. She doesn't have to go with the flow... She had always been a trendsetter, why is she doing this?
She's not Rihanna or Nelly Furtado she doesn't need those producers to score hits, her songs will be hits no matter what in the whole world (except the US where they only listen to r&B). She needs to return to her creative roots.

Matthew Ludwick Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

BTW...anywhere people can go to find sample's of her new music?

Matthew Ludwick Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 10:46 AM EST

oh by the way...no more comparing Mariah and Madonna...Mariah and that whole being treated for exhaustion...please..Madonna works 24/7 and never complains. plus as one other put it..Mariah does have a great singing voice..but i am sure in concert she could put you to sleep..Madonna's concerts can wake people out of their comas..

Matthew Ludwick Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 10:42 AM EST

i cannot wait till Madonna's new album comes out!!!! she rocks! and there will never, ever be anyone else like her. so all those saying she is too old..blah blah blah, watch her dance on her Confessions Tour and tell me anyone that can out dance her..nobody!
and as for Mariah Carey...please..her and that schreeching voice..enough to break my eardrums.
Madonna is the top selling female singer in the world and always will be..don't be jealous

Born Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 08:18 AM EST

Still love her with all her craziness, that ole good/bad Madonna. You better work! I hate to say it but I am looking forward to the album too. Make it work girl!

Great news..but they picked a horrible picture to run. Looks like a man that has had way too much plastic surgery..but I'm sure the album will be great

brian Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

american life has some really great tracks...one of my favorites.
why does everyone say it was a flop?
it platinum...right??
ok...dance floor was a great album.
comparing her and mariah??
not...mariah is a singer...she has no presence...madonna is a artist.

Having seen the 2006 Confessions Tour UP CLOSE from a very good seat, I can tell you that her presence, physical self and general bearing are STILL that of a total star in control.

I do not doubt that she has learned from the misstep of the OK-but-uneven "American Life" CD and the work she has done since then proves it. "Confessions" was a smash in every way.

She is now the guidepost against which women will be measured as they (and their catalog of songs) age in rock and roll. It was, at one time, Tina Turner (and still is to some degree) but Madonna has kept pushing farther without falling into the Lite-FM trap. I am certain that this album will ROCK.

I have a few tracks from it already and I have to say, they shine. QUINTESEENTIAL Madge. On the floor, letting it bump. GOD BLESS, BABE!

At least she isn't collaborating with the annoying Akon like Gwen Stefani, nor is she staging a "comeback" with the Black Eyed Peas like Michael Jackson. Celine Dion has (musically) "hooked up" with Ne-Yo,with predictably bad results. Timbaland has talent. He's made musical alchemy with Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado and OneRepublic. He can do the same with Madonna. Not as if she needs the help, however!

Runit16 Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Having heard a few songs from the album already, i can safely say thats its going in a different direction than confesions and American Life. Its very pop/r&b ish. Look who she has working with her, Pharell, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake. Although just working with these all-stars doesn't mean it will be a hit. Ultimately her core fans will eat it up like ... Hard Candy!

sgs Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

This is the same as Ellen Page's (who starred in Juno) psycho thriller 'Hard Candy'. It does ruin the 'fun' for me too.
Mariah's CD is out right before Madonna's and I'm anxious to see the two Divas battle it out.

I'm note really a fan of Madonna, just curious but the thing i find really amazing is that most of the people who have posted about this so far can't spell. If you don't believe me, scroll through and have a read, don't be "HATTING ON ME".

American Life was terribly underrated, IMHO. It had some truly great songs that should've been hits, like "Nothing Fails" and "Nobody Knows Me."
Really looking forward to Hard Candy.
Madonna and JT should def perform at the Hall of Fame induction: http://moviemartin.blogspot.com/2008/02/madonna-and-jt-have-date-organizers.html

I've been a fan since the beginning and I have to say, I'm not totally excited about this. I agree with another post that said that Madonna wants U.S. hits. Today's R&B is tired and I wish she would have gone in a different direction. But I haven't heard the album yet and I can't judge. I like to love all of Madonna's albums, this may be no different. I'm still going to buy it the first day it's released.

warren Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 08:07 AM EST

I am excited to hear about Madonna's new record coming out. I cannot wait. It is going to be a great year for hear. Again, she does what she always puts her mind to.

Rafael_UK Wed, Feb 27, 2008 at 02:59 AM EST

I love Madonna to bits, but I have to admit that I am not that keen on this new CD. I was hoping something as ground breaking as "Ray Of Light" or "Music". With those 2 CD's I felt that Madonna was pushing her artistic hunger to new boundaries. After those her albums felt short. American Life had a couple of good tracks and Confessions... was a bit better, but way too commercial for my taste. Also, I think that Madonna is at her best when she writes songs with Patrick Leonard. Probably I will hit somebody's nerves here, but It is just my opinion.
I hope this new CD surpises me.

Can't wait! I've been a huge Madonna fan since her first release back in the 80's. Madonna will always be the Queen in my eyes. She hasn't stopped singing or been out of the public eyes since her very first hit. Other artists comes and goes out of your life after the fans made them rich. Madonna worked very hard and don't need a Hard Candy Man to support her lifestyle, like many stars do. You go Madonna! Rule The World like you promised.

Neathen Alero Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

A title like HARD CANDY is Madonna making a statement to the world letting us know that it takes HARD determination and strength along with the perfect mix of SWEETNESS to remain relevant twenty years later! She makes a statement to the world without even singing a note... That’s real talent. Her album has us talking about the metaphorical implications prior to her publically addressing the title and contents. Only TRUE SUPERSTARS can create this dialog... She’s gonna “Kick the industries Ass” with this album guaranteed! LOVIN’ IT

Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 10:26 PM EST

I'm a hardcore Madonna fan since Bedtime Stories, but i honestly am not excited for this project. Madonna used to be GREAT at streamlining underground trends, but now, it seems like in order to get a hit in the US she needs to resort to Timbaland and Justin to crank out one of their tired productions. If it didn't work for Duran Duran, it's not gonna work for Madonna. I mean, i just wish Madonna would do something fierce and unexpected like Ray of Light, even Confessions was unexpected and great because it wasn't like anything else out there. Now she's pulling a Mariah Carey and naming her album something girly like Hard Candy and riding on the coattails of the Timbaland trend. Ewwwww. I love her, but this is just sad.

Delon Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 09:56 PM EST

TO KAR-EE:

That was exactly the first thing i thought when i read the title. I was expecting something more original. Not the title of someone else's artwork. Alas, i still can't wait for the album!

Jonathan F. Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 09:41 PM EST

She likes candy... specifically HARD candy..... only further supporting my idea that Madonna is an old and dirty whore.

David Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Good luck Madonna! But my only quibble would be: "Why do you have 2 songs named Forbidden Love, one in Bed Time Stories and the second on COTDF?" Don't get me wrong, actually I like both songs, I just wished you would have double-check your ginormous song catalog and see if you already had a song with the same title. :)

Scott Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

Thank you for not saying the CD will "drop" in March. It sounds so stupid when someone says a new CD will "drop".

Me Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 09:12 PM EST

Thank you for saying the CD will "see a US release" and will "be out at the end of March" instead of saying the CD will "drop" as if it were a testicle. It sounds so stupid to say a new CD will "drop".

First of all Madonna is NOT OLD and she is NOT EMBARASSING herself. She is her person, has always been and will always be! I can't wait for this album! I am dying to see how her new music reflects who sees when she looks at herself. At least she is not trying to screw the video camera like Mariah, or strapping herself in leather like Janet did for her latest album cover. So dude or gal relax and "Get Into The Groove"!!!!!!!!!

Lorne...you better watch your back. How dare you call Madonna "the Queen"?!

Expect an angry press release from Aretha Franklin in the immediate future.

Ceballos Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

"Madonna chose to stick with the sweet theme because 'she loves candy...'"

I don't know why, but this sentence made me crack up. I can just picture Madonna sitting in her castle in England surrounded by Gummy bears and candy canes because she loves candy so much.

lorne Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 06:37 PM EST

Madonna is the Queen. Nobody could do what she does. I cannot wait for this smash hit CD to be playing in my car. I need me some HARD CANDY!
