How much longer before we get new 'Heroes?'

Feb 6, 2008, 11:45 AM | by Hollywood Insider

Categories: Strike, TV Biz

When we last left Hiro Nakamura and the rest of the super-powered crew of NBC’s Heroes, they had barely saved the world from global pandemic — and had barely survived the barbs from fans and critics alike for an ill-considered start to the show’s strike-shortened second season. (Maya and Alejandro? Shudder.) But those who were looking forward to seeing Heroes prove itself anew might have to wait a little longer. According to executive producer Tim Kring, even if his creative team went back to work ASAP — and assuming that NBC still plans to wrap its TV season at the end of May as usual — Team Heroes would only be able to complete three more (quality) episodes. Why so few? Blame the show’s sprawling scope and complicated F/X (that fantastical time-stopping stuff takes actual time, you know). Moreover, Kring & Co. had been hoping to redeem the show’s shaky second season with a new “volume” of stories (titled “Villains”) that would have basically rebooted the series. But when the strike began in November, they had just begun plotting the comeback. In fact, the first episode of that arc, which they wanted to play like a season premiere, hadn’t been fully written. All things considered, Kring would rather relaunch Heroes when he has more episodes to play with. If NBC extends its strike-screwed season into June, that could happen sooner. If not, he’d rather wait, perhaps till fall. “To come back with just three episodes could be creatively dangerous,” says Kring. “But that’s my personal opinion. I’m not sure where the network stands in the matter. Hopefully we’ll hear that in a few days." — Jeff Jensen

Stop the Maya and Alejandro hatin'. The real slow start to the Heroes second season was Hiro's drawn out time in feudal Japan. Thank God he's outta there! I'd love to see a few more episodes but if we have to wait till fall, that's life!

"Who cares. Has anyone really been missing "HEROES"? Has anyone really been upset that there's no new episodes?"

I am I love this show and I was really bummed out and pissed that all this happened

I HATE this Writers strike!!! I miss Hiro. I miss Clair. I miss Chuck and Casey badly!!! The worst part is I do not know who the enemy is. Who should I be mad at? Please help me decide who to be mad at because they have really impacted my life. Actually, thanks to the strike it looks like I am going to have to get a life!

I have to ask (and this is for no one particular).

Would it absolutely be the worst thing in the world for the spring TV season to spill over into some (or even most) of the summer? I'm not sure how that would work for actors' schedules. I don't know if they've been sitting around not working (like the striking writers have) and if they'd even be available to tape episodes for a summer run.

It's just weird to me that no one is really even considering airing episodes in the (admittedly usually barren) summer season. I mean, I'd watch.

I see comments about how the writers just write “Crap” anyway. Well, the studios buy “Crap” from the writers and Americans watch the “Crap.” If Americans didn’t watch the “Crap,” then the studios would be forced to buy fresh material from new writers. So, it seems if we stop watching “Crap,” then writers will stop writing “Crap.” One more thing; people are saying that writers shouldn’t receive residuals. Book authors get paid for every book we buy to read. Why shouldn’t writers get paid for every movie or TV series sold?

I see comments all over about how the writers are to blame for thousands of people out of work. The WGA did make some demands (Animation and Reality be represented) then the AMPTP walked out. The AMPTP said they would not negotiate with these line items on the table. I feel like the ITASE (Animation union) are getting ripped off and reality writers are getting burned, but that’s just my opinion. Anyway, the WGA agreed to remove the items from the table in order to negotiate so that the writers and the thousands of others back to work. Did the AMPTP hold their end of the deal? No, they didn’t. The DGA (Directors guild) worked out their contract with the AMPTP. Now the AMPTP decides to come back to negotiations with the WGA. Why did the AMPTP want to keep these thousands of people out of work until after the DGA settled?

I'd hope that the networks would extend into June, then we could get maybe 8 new episodes.

donner Wed, Feb 6, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

I've written (ha) the Spring season of tv off and figure we won't see anything new from any network until the Fall...and I hope that isn't screwed up as well...I hope that this long break from Heroes will let us all remove the bad taste on our tongues and come back refreshed, ready for some decent shows and not the crap we were served from "Generations"...ugh...
