Maks drops out of 'Dancing With the Stars' for new season

One of Dancing With the Stars' most beloved pros is diversifying. Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who tangoed his way to second place twice, with celebrity partners Leila Ali and Mel B., is taking next season off to pursue other projects. "There are a lot of things in the works that I want to tend to," says the 28-year-old Latin ballroom champion. "People say this show opens doors, but you're so busy doing the show, that you're not able to use the doors." Speaking from the set of the second Dancing with the Stars fitness DVD, due out this fall, Chmerkovskiy, known to fans as Maks, says he'll be back the following season, but won't be specific about his immediate future. The sixth round of DWTS premieres on ABC on March 17. On Tuesday, Feb.19, Good Morning America will break the top secret news of which celeb will be waltzing with which dancer this season. The only thing we know for now is that Maks won't be one of them.

I had the opportunity to meet Maks yesterday at the Marriott Hotel in Livonia, Michigan. I was attending a shower for my soon to be daughter-in-law and he was sitting just outside the dinning room area. He was here in Michigan for a promotion at a nearby mall. He was very friendly and nice. We talked for a few minutes and he was gracious enough to have a picture taken with me. I was delighted to hear that he will be back on Dancing With the Stars in September.

OMG, I *just* found out that my Maksim Mondays will be minus a Maksim! Nooooooo! No reason to watch this season. The new guy looks skeevy. Hope Maks comes back next season as promised. And does lots of pro dances on the results shows this season.

em Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

Poor Maks. I guess his lover is getting jealous...........

BN Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 03:39 PM EST

I agree with Richard Wm. Narlian .... You all are soooo juvenile and trivial. This stuff is fluff. I just happened in on this page and now I'm going back to the real news. Get a life, juvies!!!!

Quelyn Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

I think the Osmonds had something to do with Maks departure this season. I remember Maks commenting on Marie's lack of enough dance skill to be in the finals. Donnie said, "Oh, no, no no Maks you shouldn't say that". Perhaps, the Osmonds have some muscle in regards to which dancers dance. They certainly manipulated things, so Marie could hang in long enough to sell her "doll".

Donna Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 09:20 AM EST

Maks is a fantastic dancer. There are
few people that could be in his class
as a dancer. He is almost and maybe is the perfect dancer. Good luck in the future, Maks.

Dancing with the Stars is entertaining. It is also meant to be competitive, so it is what it is. Fans need to lighten up! Vote and have fun!

gloria Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 01:55 AM EST

I'm really happy to hear Max will be leaving!!! Great dancer, but his ego is way way out there!I can't believe someone commented that Max was the next best thing too ELVIS. you have got too be kidding.

jean Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Hey Tia, there were a few oldies on the show who were very entertaining. How will you be at their age ha! good luck to Maks, he was fun to watch.

michelle Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Without Maks, I won't be watching.

Sally in Chicago Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 11:34 AM EST

Elizabeth: you make a good point. He probably saw the list and said "meh" oh no! and decided to take a sabbatical.

Sally in Chicago Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

Maks is probably tired of all the female voters voting for the male celeb dancers. I would be po'd too....Maks was the best and the producers gave him some hot (black) dancers. But the deck is stacked against him from winning with a female period. Mel was good, Laila was good, but the female voters don't want a woman to win, Maks or no Maks. He's got a better future away from DWTS anyway.

jet Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

Maks is certainly an excellent dancer and very creative. He is also one of those who is better seen and not heard. As soon as he opens his mouth his true self is shown and his talent is out the window.

Elizabeth Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

What a bummer.... but, after the list came out, there really wasn't anyone I wanted paired up with "our" Maks. Enjoy your time off. Absence will make the heart grow fonder - and more desperate for those Jared commercials.

Judy Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 09:53 PM EST

Maks is a hottie. He will be missed. When he comes back next season I hope they pair him up with a more feminine star. I'd really like to know how they match the pros with the celebrity.

Andrew Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 09:17 PM EST

I agree with dancing fanatic. It was absoloutley ridiculous Jerry Rice got 2nd in season 2. He really should've gotten 5th or 6th.

dancing fanatic Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

off topic, but just wanted to say I've been watching DWTS season 2, on BBC America.
Although Derew Lachey was very good, Stacey Keebler was phenomenal, and should have won that season!
And Jerry Rice finshing second? He should have finshed 4th or 5th!

michigander Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 02:35 PM EST

you won't be missed by me, Max.
Your poor sportsmanship and big ego got on my nerves.

Good luck with your big career move.
ha!

mikek-crawl back into that sewer that you came from!

Jill Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 09:08 AM EST

I hope Maxie reads these posts. We will miss your humor, charm and FANTASTIC dance moves this season. It won't be the same without his over confident sexiness.

To Richard Wm. Narlian Mon, Feb 18, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

You are such a tool!

Sue Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

He will be greatly missed. The show will NOT be the same. Hoping Maks will be back in 7

Brenda Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

Maks has already used DWTS as a stepping stone: he has a solid fan base, he's built up his teaching practice, and he's ripe for commercials and film work (he's certainly gorgeous enough.) But I hope he doesn't become the David Caruso of DWTS: after all, he's never won the competition and maybe he'd be better off to hang on until he does.

Ceballos Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

This is definitely a significant blow to the upcoming season of "DWTS".

Maks is funny and his chemistry with his last two partners has been a major highlight of the show (as has his improved choreography).

Also, I believe Maks came in second last year, but third with Laila Ali (I'm pretty sure Apolo beat out Joey Fatone for that crown).

zara from Dublin Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 02:58 PM EST

Oh dear maks am going to miss u,please be sure to come back & i hope you win one day !!.

Celest Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 06:25 AM EST

Well I hope he gets a good break. This report also got it wrong. he did not get 2nd place twice. he was third the season before and second with Mel B.

I do not think hi sego was bruised, but when people like Helio who couldn't dance his way out of a paper bag to save his life, it is hard on those who work hard in their sport. I support his decision to go on to other things. They work hard on that show just to have people without a eye for good dancers vote someone like Marie into the finals.

kathy Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 05:58 AM EST

No I want Maks back. Show your support for Maks and say you want him on the results show. Contact ABC

Dance With Me Sun, Feb 17, 2008 at 04:55 AM EST

MsDaisy Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 11:56 PM EST

Oh Maks...I will miss your extremely talented chest and tush.

Kristine Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

Richard Wm. Narlian, after all, you are reading Entertainment Weekly online....are you SURE that you are Holier than the next guy when it comes to worrying about the planet more?

Tina Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:07 PM EST

I am so sorry Maksim will be leaving. He is the sexiest guy on the show!!!!! Hate to see you leave and GOOD LUCK in everything you do!!!!!!

Kristine Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST

Ha! Well, I can see there are plenty of others who have good taste and also think he is the best looking man on TV, and not much reason to vote or give it my full attention without him. See you in August, Maks.

Richard Wm. Narlian Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 09:13 PM EST

I just came across your site here, and all I can say,is,WHAT a waste of rescuources.
Here we(the boomers)are worrying about the shape of this planet, once we depart& ALL THAT CONCERNS YOU IS THIS DRIVELL?
Good luck my kiddies-go forth& prosper.

Stacey Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 07:48 PM EST

WHAT??? No Maks???? That totally sucks! He is the main reason I watched....hope the cast is awesome, otherwise, see you when he is back.

Del Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Actually, Maks and Mel were robbed - BIGTIME. M&M deserved to win. Not Laila. Liked her a lot, but her result was fair and correct.

Gonna miss you, Maks!

Working Girl Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

RBlues Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

Actually, the DWTS lineup will be revealed first on Monday night's "Dance Wars".

Tia Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Maks was the greatest. He and Laila were robbed. I won't be watching next season becuase Donnie Osmond will be on, as will a bunch of real OLD people, with no careers!

Jane P. Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

"Well, without the best looking man on tv, I sure hope that the star contestants can measure up. He will be sorely missed this next season.

alison Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I'll miss you Maks!!

aa Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 11:58 AM EST

my faves are dropping like flies. first louis and now maks. i'm going to miss his chest the most.

kim Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 11:49 AM EST

Good move Maks - wish you the very best!

Lee Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 11:35 AM EST

Without Maks, the only pro to entertain me will be Derek. I guess I do not need to split my votes anymore.

hooker Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 11:20 AM EST

He was said to have a personal account on a Luxury online service M e e t R i c h ,c o m for successful
and celebs singles with his hot pictures and blog there. Quite a few hot girls and ladies wrote to him.

Kelly Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Maks say it aint so.....it just won't be the same without you. Good Luck on your new adventure.

maggie Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 10:10 AM EST

Ohhh, is his huge ego hurt. While he is very good looking, his ego is disgusting.

NOOO Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

say it isnt so, he is my favorite dancer along with Edyta

Jen Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 06:04 AM EST

I will him well but I will miss him lots. I guess my cordless phone will get a rest at voting time.

Laura Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 02:14 AM EST

My mom will be very very sad. She said she was hot. Which made me laugh really hot.

Not because he isn't hot (cause he is), but because I never thought I'd hear her say someone was hot.

Houstonian Jen in DC Sat, Feb 16, 2008 at 01:30 AM EST

Maks, my dear, sweet, chest-exposed Maks! What will I do without your come-hither looks and long extensions for a season?? ::sigh::
