Randy Jackson addresses Carly Smithson's absence from last night's 'Idol'

Feb 20, 2008, 03:32 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: American Idol, TV Biz

Carly_l Astute readers of EW.com's American Idol TV Watch pointed out on our message boards that only 11 of the 12 female semifinalists were in the audience during last night's men's semifinal performances. Missing from the group: Carly Smithson (pictured), the Irish-born songbird who's been under intense media scrutiny because of her one-time deal with MCA Records, which resulted in Ultimate High, the 2001 flop (it sold only a few hundred copies) she recorded under the name Carly Hennessy.

But conspiracy theorists wondering if the controversy got Smithson booted from the show should hold their horses. Randy Jackson, who dropped by EW.com headquarters to shoot an episode of Idolatry this afternoon, attributes Smithson's absence to a flu bug that had hit several female contestants this week. "I think they didn't want them infecting the others," Jackson said. "They were doing sort of an Idol quarantine." Asked if viewers were in for a surprise on tonight's women's semifinal show, Jackson couldn't have been more adamant: "No, no, no, definitely not."

A Fox spokesperson confirmed Jackson's report, adding that Smithson's fellow semifinalist Kristy Lee Cook also left the audience midway through the evening because she was feeling ill.

I love carly, she is the only reason i was watching this show.but from now on,I refuse to watch Idols anymore.American keep the younger and good looking people in there, this is so wrong. I hope your guys can vote right president, not suck like this.
I love you ,carly.I will keep my eyes on you, don't like me dispointed.

michellestreet Sat, Apr 19, 2008 at 01:08 PM EST

I love Carly, and in a completely hetero way (at least I think). She is so naturally beautiful, to the eyes and ears. I don't gawk over famous or popular people. I don't think, "OMG, so-n-so is sooo hot" or fantasize about actors or musicians or whoever, but Carly has really got my attention. She's not a toothpick like everyone seems to think women on TV should be nowadays. She's someone who I'm sure in person is the girl who turns every head in the room and doesn't even know it. Plus, with that voice not only should she have been famous years ago, but she's worked hard at this career, unlike these others who get better and better each week on the show bc they've never done the work before to hone their skills or train their voices. Carly started off way better than any of the others and none of them will ever come close to her.

YOUS AMERICANS ARE SO RACIST TOWARDS IRISH PEOPLE. GO GROW UP THE WHOLE LOT OF YOUS. SHE HAD A RECORD DEAL BEFORE BIG DEAL. YOUS WUD ALL LOVE TO BE IN THE SAME POSITION AS SHE IS NOW, YAS ARE ALL JEALOUS. STOP SLAGGING HER FOR LOOKING A BIT DIFFERENT TO ALL THEM OTHER CONTESTENTS. THAT ARE LIKE BARBIE AND KENS, PLASTIC AND CANT SING. I THINK SHES BEAUTIFUL LOOKING AND HAS A AMAZING VOICE

itz very funtastic

Jabo Sat, Mar 29, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Carly doesn't fit most people's idea of an American Idol... An AI should be great looking and have a great voice, as well as, dress well when they are performing. Carly and Amanda have none of these qualities. Carly with those ugly tats and Amanda's bad hair. Kristy and several others have these qualities. Carly should, at least, wear long sleeves and go on a diet...

t Sun, Mar 23, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

amanda sucks David Archuleta is the BEST!!!!!!!!!

TweetyB2004 Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

Kristy should have been voted off instead of Amanda. She is not a performer...she needs to go back to taking care of her horses. Amanda brought an element of style to Idol...it was refreshing to have someone on there who appreciates my kind of music...

I have a question---are Carly Smithson and Michael John's American Citizens?????
If not, why are they on Idol at all!!!

The Boy George comments are hilarious. She may be 24 but she looks 35 amongst the rest of the contestants. She won't win, she is not what the contest is about.

judy Mon, Mar 3, 2008 at 03:02 PM EST

just to let you know little david is going to be the next american idol. I have not been wrong for 7 season's.
Every one loves him and he stands out plus he can SING.

Stop pimping your stupid website pleease!!! It's viral.

justgo Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 03:17 AM EST

You go girl! Do what you want. Do you have a profile on millionaire personals site WealthyRomance.com? I saw you on that site last week.

absolute Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 03:04 AM EST

She is my favorite actress. I love her. I saw her profile on millionaire personals site WealthyRomance.com last week. Is she single now?

VICI Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

The fact is that Carly isn't all that great. Compared to the rest of the girls she's quite good but she's nothing special. it just feels that all the hype is so unwarranted. Then Randy comes and says something stupid like "Best vocal of the past two days!" which is total BS, and that's why people are just annoyed with her. She seems like a nice girl though! I can't hate for taking another shot at stardom, I hate 19E and the Idol machine for cramming her down our throats.

Darthfleenor Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 01:19 AM EST

Carly wouldn't even be an issue without all the hype. The simple fact is this: IF the show was really all about the singing talent, she wouldn't have a chance... hence, the hype...

Jabo Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Carly has a fair voice, but I just can't get past all the tats. A small tattoo on her butt would be fine. The tats will cost her lots of votes. She should cover them when on stage. Makes her look too much like Amy Winehouse...

nightengale Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 01:46 AM EST

Carly = Boy George

Moi Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 08:51 PM EST

She's still an unknown (except for the AI hype). Her song and video sucks on her debut album. I don't care if MCA spent 100 million, they screwed up, not her. I'd like to hear her sing some decent songs by some decent writers and see some decent videos. Nuff said. She deserves another shot!

aifan Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 07:14 PM EST

Kristy Lee Cook had a record deal too:

http://www.kristylee-cook.com/bio.html

SS Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 05:22 PM EST

Carly had her chance... and should NOT be on AI. That said, if she stays, I don't think she is good enough to win.

KK Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 03:32 PM EST

Doesn't evryone deserve a second chance? She was a kid when she did the record. She's still a baby and she can sing..leave her alone.

MMM Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 03:06 PM EST

Regarding pros v. amateurs - recall that last season's winner Ms. Sparks had recorded several gospel records, toured and won "singing" competitions as well. Talk about a pro!

Zoeysmom92081 Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

What is wrong with you people. MCA invested TWO MILLION DOLLARS in Carly Hennessy Smithson. Her record sold less than 400 copies. She had the deal the AI winner will get or hope to get. She should not be in this competition. It's a farce.

hippocrite#1 Fri, Feb 22, 2008 at 08:09 AM EST

I always get ticked when I hear comments about crooked teeth, being fat etc. But on the other side of my brain I'm agreeing that it is a bit distracting. But I hate myself for it. So, the fault lies with me, not with them. I'm the one needs changing.

hippichick Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

I love American Idol!!!

Nat X Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Can I also add that girlfriend's teeth are f'ed up? Seriously. Distracting, like Elliot Yamin's were before he got the $$ to fix them. I don't mind snaggletooth in person (I'm one myself), but if you're on tv, you need to get some work done.

Nat X Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

I'm glad Carly was able to mention her previous record deal on the show last night. She pointed out that she got the deal when she was 16, the album was released when she was 17. She's 24 now. (I think I have all those ages right.) The rule is that you can't have an existing record deal, and that's that. I'm sure she's changed a lot since she was 17. I think that if someone is truly a gifted singer, they probably have tried to make a career our of it at some point. They are usually the best singers on the show, obviously. I'm sick of kids who think just cuz they like to sing in the car on the way to their waitressing job, that means they deserve to be big super stars. I appreciate the ones who have put a little work into it.

Kathleen Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

I agree...she is not a 'professional'. Sounds like the record label didn't promot her.

She is not the only person that has 'experience'. The guy from Australia had a tentative recording contract that fell through as well as one Kristy Lee Cook's contract and David won 'Star Seach' years ago.

I believe they all should have a shot at the title.
GO CARLY!!!!

Hello? Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

But Helen dear, she is 'unknown' and therefore should be given another try.

helen Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 01:17 PM EST

My thought is that Carly should not be on IDOL!! As she already had a shot and flopped!! Give some unknown person a try!!!

keishaW Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

Well 1st off I think they should have never let the young lady go (i forget her name)she had came out to Hollywood after her father was killed and her daughter was disabled. When she sung acapella in Hollywood I was so shocked and disappointed she was sent home. Sometimes the judges let good talent pass them by! I hope she blows up big and they feel stupid..again!

DBuck Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:51 AM EST

I hope the Carrie Underwood look-alike does something different with her look. It's too easy to see her and compare her to Carrie.

Zebbie Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 11:41 AM EST

omg! This chick is Boy George reincarnated!

So THERE! Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:01 AM EST

Carly is good and she deserves a deal. And so do a couple others, I don't know who they are yet but when they start singing good, I'll tell ya.

msdit Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST

We really do watch this show every year and I want to see all the winners blow up and be stars not just certain ones. What happen to our winner last year? I'll tell you he has appeared in some run down casinos.

Ms di Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 11:41 PM EST

What is this show all about the guys are taking up tv. time non of them can sing. What's the difference only favorites make it.....

SallyinChicago Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 11:38 PM EST

The 6 boyz + 6 girls is going to backfire on the producers because this year you have better and more girl singers than boys.

SallyinChicago Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 11:23 PM EST

This girl has gotten WAY TOO MUCH PUBLICITY for just being her. Her pic is everywhere on the internet...yet if you saw the show tonight there were 4 women who outsang her: Amanda, Rami, Asia and Syesha.
Give it a rest EW.

Bill Daman Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

I think this programe should be for amateurs only and not for the people that had record deals before. Especially (as I understand)owned by Mr. Randy Jackson. Thanks.

Judy K Tarter Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 08:27 PM EST

I feel for these girls if they have the flu. I got it a few weeks ago and it's some bad stuff. I'm watching the show now and so far i think their doing great.

Justin Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

In the ABC news article you link, who is this mysterious "Mike Slezk" character they quote? You should demand a formal apology, Michael! Yeah, you show em who's boss.

Hi Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

I am not sure what they would do with sick idol here but one fellow in UK got sick...they let him miss a week but when he could not continue after that he was released. Sort of related...I can remember them telling Josh in season 2 if he got called up for deployment he could come back in the same spot the following season. So guess something like that is an option. Probably depends where they are in the contest...which round and such.

wonderin' Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

And why is this board going the wrong way?

wonderin' Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Shucks, I hope she and the other gal will be able to sing. What happens if a contestant is too sick to sing? Are they ousted?

James Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

Well, by tomorrow we'll see whether Carly was worth all the hype that the producers could muster. I have a feeling that Syesha or Asia'H will outshine her, but who knows? At any rate, people know who she is now -- that's the power of the show.

RememberMe Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Chikezie was not the worst. He however was the funniest bad performance.

idolwatcher Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

Chikezie - was not the WORST singer on the show last night. Garret - the one with the "teen idol" fluffy hair - was - far and away just really bad. He needs to go - pronto ! I like Carly - and I want to hear more from her- like tonight - this season - the females will "own" the AI show - based on what I saw from the males - last night....

to Strepsi: Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 05:21 PM EST

Too funny. I thought he was looking and sounding a lot like Carlton Banks, and then the "whoo" totally took it over the top.

Dave Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 04:47 PM EST

I'm not really into this Carly Smithson. Not sure why they are all over her. Maybe it's her tats.

JamesB Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

Strepsi, that is way to funny!!!! Nice line.

Strepsi Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 04:12 PM EST

"Kristy Lee Cook also left the audience midway through the evening because she was feeling ill."
So did I. It was right after I saw and heard Chikezie.....
