Abigail Breslin to join Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin in 'My Sister's Keeper'

Breslincasting_l Abigail Breslin will star opposite Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin in New Line Cinema's upcoming drama, My Sister's Keeper. Elle Fanning had been in negotiations to play the part, with her sister, Dakota, in talks to play her older sister, but the Fannings' deal fell apart and Breslin landed the role.

Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog) is attached to direct the film adaptation of the heartbreaking novel by Jodi Picoult. Breslin will play Anna, a 13-year-old girl who was conceived as a genetic match for her cancer-ridden sister (Medium's Sofia Vassilieva is in talks to play the sister) and is seeking emancipation from her parents. Diaz plays Anna's mother and a former defense attorney who returns to court to defend herself and her husband (the role of Diaz's husband has yet to be cast). Baldwin will play Anna's lawyer.

Jeremy Leven, who previously partnered with Cassevetes and producer Mark Johnson on New Line's The Notebook, penned the script. Shooting begins March 3 in Los Angeles.

Finished the book not that long ago.I am terribly disspointed in the choice of actors. I wonder, why lesser knowns couldnt have been used? Sadly it seems the quality of the pictured has been diminished for the sake of some "big" name stars. I agree with the comment before, kate Winslet would have been a fantastic Sara. Ido believe Diaz has some acting ability - remember gangs of new york? but not enough to carry her through this meaty role.

Alec Balwdin is just wrong. There are no two ways about it, But the worst for me is Abigail. For a girl who lack the ability to cry in any movie she's been in to suddenly be able to perform to his standard is ridiculous. Atleast the lovely bones went with a realistic cast....

Allie Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

When I read the cast I could not believe it! the casting is horrible my picks would be Anna: some unknown. def not abigail. the character is too complex for her. Kate: i think they did a pretty good job with sofia-ive never heard of her and she looks the part, Jessie they did a great job on, Cambell- GOOD LORD WHY IN GODS NAME IS ALEC BALDWIN PLAYING HIM! my picks would def. be patrick dempsey or rob lowe. julia: ellen pompeo or cameron diaz. (who is playing julia anyways?! I swear if they leave her out I would cry!! Then again, with Alec-the fat gross looking guy-playing the supposidly handsome young man Cambell I could bust a few tears out right now) sarah: Julia Roberts - she could totally pull that complex character off. brain: Denise Quad or Ben Affleck (i always pictured him as the fireman type)

Casting Sucks. Book is amazing. Hopefully it wont be that bad

Ed Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

i am reading my sisters keeper right now and i have to say is a reall good book. I think the cast they chose is a fair cast.they cloud have change a few thing s that would have made it better.

Nina Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 09:08 PM EST

Please dear god, don't let abigail breslin play Anna. This is the only book i have ever completely broke down sobbing after reading... and if she plays anna the only thing i will be able to think about is her little dirty dance in little miss sunshine. and diaz to play sara? come on people.

Mon, Oct 20, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

alec baldwin as campbell.. i never would have thought. i didn't exactly picture campbell like alec in my mind while reading and isn't diaz a little too young to play sara?

Melissa S Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

Like everyone here, I love the book as well, who wouldn't it's an absolute masterpiece. It's also really obvious to anyone who throughly read the book who shouldn't be playing which parts. Honestly I think Jodi Picoult herself should have a say into who is casted for what parts, after all she created these characters in our minds.

Kristen Thu, Oct 2, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

I'm so excited to hear about the movie. I absoutley adore the book. But with the cast that is listed, I think they could have done better. Cameron Diaz is way to young looking to be the mother of 3 grown children, and am I mistaken, but I thought the mother had dark hair in the book?! And Alec as Campbell....seriously?! Ugh!!! I'm a little iffy on the cast, None the less, I will be seeing it when it comes out, I just hope they don't butcher the book, as most movies do :(

Cara Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 07:40 PM EST

WHY ALEC BALDWIN! i love love love this book but alec baldwin!??!?! i thought campbell was supposed to be handsome and young and alec baldwin is old and scary!

charlotte Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:51 PM EST

The lovely bone too that is anouther favourite book of mine and it is also a film Wwwooowwwwwwwwwwww!!!!

charlotte Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 02:49 PM EST

i am 13 years old and have read the book lots of times. i am excited about the film but they changed some of the characters names. Why? Still excited though!!!

Emily Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 05:12 PM EST

in my opinion, cameron diaz should have played the roll of julia. when i first heard that the book was going to soon become a movie i assumed that cameron was going to play julia. the movie will still be good but isnt cameron a little young looking to play a woman who has three grown kids? i dno thats just my thought. but im so excited for the movieeeee. 2009 babay!

alyssa diaz Tue, Aug 12, 2008 at 12:56 AM EST

i just finished reading the book and i thought that it was amazing. The cast sounds really funny to me but maybe once i see them all up on screen and in their roles everything will fall into place.

Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

hey nicole. i read "My sisters keeper at 12 years old" I just turned 14, anf it precedes to be my favorite book of all time. dont doubt the intellegence of a 12 year old. And Abigail is very talented.

Jessica Sat, Jul 26, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

I completely LOVED the book, however I'm not so sure about how I'm going to feel about the movie because of the characters. I really wouldn't have pictured the cast that you chose as the people in the book. I'm not a huge fan of the dakota's, but I do think that they would've been better. Even though I'm sort of disappointed in the cast that was chosen, I'm still looking forward to the movie and I'm hoping it's extremely similar to the book.

futuremrsregalado Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:18 PM EST

I'm not really sure about CDIaz playing the mother's role, the part fits for a more mature and strong-willed woman. Cameron won't be needing to dye her hair because she's gonna be wearing a bald cap to fit the part of the book where the mother shaves her head to relieve any shame her daughter may feel. && I absolutely agree that Patrick Dempsey should have played Campbell's part. This is my all-time favorite book, I hope the movie does justice to Picoult's masterpiece!

Michelle Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

I am so sick of Abigail Breslin. In fact, I would have preferred the Fannings.

Kelly Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 01:50 AM EST

I just hope that, unlike most books made into movies, that this one actually is good. I have already read some things about the movie that dont parallel with the book. Baldwin? Isnt Campbell suposed to be cute? Diaz? ug. I think im going to be disappointed. :(

Andrea Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 11:48 PM EST

if cameron dyed her hair brown im all good

i think its a good cast

Melissa Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

If you look go to the internet movie database...it doesnt even list Julia as one of the characters in the movie.

Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 06:21 PM EST

I absolutely LOVED the book. I think that Abigail Breslin's maturity level is ok for Anna but her looks...I don't know. It would be better if they had a less famous person playing Anna's role. Diaz is definitely too young looking, she would be better as Julia. But no specific people have really "clicked" for any of the roles, personally. They had better stick to the book, otherwise whats the point of calling it My Sister's Keeper? So they had better keep all the details in it. Including Jesse and her death and stuff. And I'm not sure about Alec Baldwin. I don't know, maybe he'll be ok, let's hope so cuz it was an awesome book. I'll be seeing the movie, even if it's just out of curiousity. I don't know. I just pray it's good cuz it's my favorite book.

Elizabeth Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

Okay adding to my comment below :
I figured out who should have played Campbell ; Patrick Dempsey(:

Elizabeth Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 02:01 PM EST

Elle and Dakota would be perfect for Kate and Anna ! Abigal will probably be really good too.
I'm not sure about Alec Baldwin to play Campbell though ...

Heather Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

I think that the fanning sister would have been a perfect match for the role of anna and kate, but i would likfe to see if this girl can pull off the role. Alec baldwin would be perfect for the role of the lawyer, he can play a very funny role and serious as well. HOWEVER! I AM EXTREMELY UPSET THAT CAMERON DIAZ will be playing the role of the mother, it is a too serious of a role for her to pull off!! She is going to destroy the role!!!!!

Alissa Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 04:39 PM EST

those who say abigail breslin for anna is too young---elle fanning just turned 10 2 months ago. dakota fanning is at least 14, a little closer to play kate.

alison Thu, Jun 12, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

people need to calm down! just wait until the movie comes out and then we can see if the casting was off. jeez.

Saane Mon, May 26, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

I think Abigail Breslin is the perfect choice for Anna. Those that say she is too young to play the role need to remember that Abigail is 12, which is not much younger than Anna. Abigail has a maturity beyond her years, and her talent as an actress is breathtaking. Just watch Little Miss Sunshine.. The only reason I watched that train-wreck that was 'No Reservations' was for Abigail, she has a presence that is undeniable. Baldwin as Campbell might be a bit of stretch, he'll need to maybe drop some poundage - but I think he's whitty and handsome enough to make it work. I would have thought Cameron as Julia and Joan as Sara would have been a better choice. All the same, I love the book and wept at the end. I hope the movie will have the affect.

nicole Sun, May 25, 2008 at 06:11 PM EST

breslin? she'll atract the wrong audience!!!!! soooooooo dissapointing! is she even old enough to read the amazing book? i think faning would be much better! i think julia should be kate beckinsale!!!!!!!!!!!!!

emily Sat, May 24, 2008 at 02:51 AM EST

i agree sooo much with renunka. good lord, the casting is sjsut horrible left right and centre. they're good at the things they've done. i think anna and kate should be unknowns, definitely not stars as big as fanning and breslin. the book as amazing... the casting is just out of place

renuka Thu, May 22, 2008 at 06:39 AM EST

My sister's keeper is one of my favourite books and I shudder to think of the miscasting- everyone is wrong; kate winslet would have made a good sara- an actress with enough gravitas to carry the weighty role; also alec baldwin is so wrong- he's old and fat and just doesn't suit campbell's wry sardonic humour- a hugh jackman, or maybe even a robert downey jr. and julia should be younger and feistier- also abigail tho good is a trifle too young for anna- oh the casting could just ruin the movie!

renuka Thu, May 22, 2008 at 06:38 AM EST

i don't know...i mean i love the book and everything (its one of my favorites) but i just don't see any of the people they cast as the characters looking anything like the way i imagined them...and they totally can't cut the role of jesse out, it would be a travesty..oh and if the character that dies doesn't die then the whole movie is BS because the sad ending is what makes it such a powerful novel..real life doesn't always end pretty and shouldn't get a hollywood ending because people don't want to cry.

Jessica Sun, May 4, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

Dylan is right, I absolutely cannot stand her. I was totally looking forward to seeing the Kit Kittridge movie and then I heard that she was playing Kit.

Ginger Sat, May 3, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I can't wait to see this movie!!!

abskadab Thu, May 1, 2008 at 11:45 PM EST

I'm not really sure about the casting. I personly think they got it all wrong. Even though I adore Cameron Diaz she is more of a comedian, and the part as the mother is a VERY serious role. Also Abigail looks too young, and Alec Baldwin is too old to be playing the lawyer. Don't get me wrong I really respect all the actors they've casted, it's just I think they got it all wrong. But let's hope the movie sticks to the book and not judge till we see the movie. =]

Person from last post Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 07:02 PM EST

Never mind Alec Baldwin is waaaay to old to play Campbell and so is Joan Cusack as Julia. They are supposed to be like 33.

Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

I don't think Abigail Breslin is old enough to play Anna. Cameron Diaz shouldn't play the mother. She doesn't look like how the mother was described. Alec Baldwin is absolutely perfect for Campbell and Sophia should be good for Kate.

niky Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

i think dakota fanning is an amazing young actress and would have been great. dont know about her sister though, has she been in ANYTHING??
cameron diaz is not even close to being a good enough actress to play such a complex role. she needs to stick to substance-less roles.
and i noticed a comment about someone with campbells condition not being able to have a license...that is not true. you just have to be without an episode for a certain amount of time, i think six months.
and the role of campbell should def be someone younger, and more handsome.
i really hope they dont butcher this, its such a remarkable book

Jackie Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 09:36 PM EST

so i totally think the book is going to be slaughtered...and that upsets me because the book is ALWAYS BETTER than the movie

Cynthia Rocha Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 06:15 PM EST

I am currently reading My Sisters Keeper and think it is a fantastis book. I am also 13 years old and feel I can totaly understand Anna's point of view. I knew that they should have made this into a movie and when i heard they were I was super happy. This author is great and I can't wait to see this at the movies. Though, books are always better than hte movie.

Adriennee Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 05:36 PM EST

Wow. Alec Baldwin as Campbell Alexander? I think that's a horrible idea. I was looking forward to seeing who would be playing Campbell's character, and when i found out it was Alec Baldwin, i'm seriously debating on whether or not i will see the film.

georgia Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

and i forgot...

THEY HAVE TO HAVE JESSE!!!! i loved his character!!!

some good choices for jesse (in my opinion) could be(and by the way im just thinking of some people so i havnt thought hard but yehh)...

*nick dagosto (plays west in heroes)
*chase crawford (nate on gossip girl)
*bobby morley -i reckon he could do it (drew on home and away -australian soap)
ummmm yerr i cant think off many more actually.....anyone else like to comment on my jesse idea or have you got some ideas of ur own-i would appriciate it haha
xxx

georgia Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

(georgia, 14, australia-just thought id say that)
the casting is ok...
i remember when i heard it was gonna be made into a movie i was so exited (as its my fave book) but when i heard elle was anna and dakota was kate i was really dissappointed bcoz anna is supposed to know what shes doing (and i dought a 10yr old would know all those terms and have the knowledge and personality anna has!) im really happy that abigale had the part but i think dakota would have been good aswell to play anna (JUST NOT KATE).
i think sofia is a pretty good choice for kate i think she could portray the character well and i cant think of many others i would like as kate but so far i think to movie sounds awesome!
i really dont think elle (although shes so cute and can act) could be the character of anna she is WAY too young and the book is awesome-stick to it and speaking of sticking to the book THEY HAVE TO KEEP THE ENDING, it made me cry even after reading it afew times!
OMG I CANT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE!!!

kit Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 09:03 AM EST

Interesting. I always thought the book would be great as a play, with the different monologue. Hope the movie is a good as the book.

ileana Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 10:52 PM EST

abigail is very talented but will look so young to play a 13 year old!!

Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

Hugh Grant would be perfect for Campbell! Scarlette Johanson would be good for Jessica....with brown hair of course.

Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 06:12 PM EST

Hugh Grant would be perfect for Campbell! Scarlette Johanson would be good for Jessica....with brown hair of course.

Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 06:06 PM EST

You are casting this all wrong. Sarah is supposed to be an older woman with brown hair. Cameron Diaz is my favorite actress so maybe she can do it, but i don't know. as for kate and anna, you have it wrong completely. Alison Lohman from Matchstick Men would be perfect for Kate! As for Anna, i think that Dakota Fanning could do the part.

jayme Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

that'll probably mean that the person who is supposed to die probably wont die. so itll be a happy, hollywood ending. at least i wont cry.

ibethestrawberry@Yahoo.com Tue, Apr 1, 2008 at 12:24 AM EST

Apparently (according to Jodi Picoult) the ending is different from the book. Which probably means it won't be as good.

shanda Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 08:36 PM EST

Its great! i love her, and stuck up Dakota didnt even want the part because she would have to shave her head

Jan Wed, Mar 26, 2008 at 12:21 PM EST

Alec Baldwin is WAY TO OLD to be Campbell!! cuz in the bbok he's supposed to be around 32! and Diaz is WAY TO YOUNG to be a mother with 3 kids! the cast for anna is good tho...OMG just dun mess up the story! the story is just so great!

Stacey Mon, Mar 24, 2008 at 12:50 AM EST

The reason Dakota would not do it is because she would not shave her head, so what does that say about her? Doing that is a HUGE part of the role. I know because as I write this I am sitting in my daughter's hospital room with her looking just as beautiful bald as she did with hair.

Amy Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

I agree, they make it seem like she's the only little girl out there for these films. She's good, but you've got to switch it up once in a while. There are other good young actresses out there, too. (Personally, I'd like to see more of AnnaSophia Robb). People are going to be really sick of the poor kid by the time this movie comes out.

Grace Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

It's been said that Dakota didn't want to shave her head for the part, and that's why she backed out. She could have had an infinite number of reasons for that, so it's hard to judge her. As for Abigail, she is quickly rising way past Dakota as one of the biggest child stars in the business. She's a good little actress and will probably do a nice job in the role, but she has literally starred in 4 movies in the past year: No Reservations, Definitely Maybe, and the upcoming Nim's Island and American Girl movie. I've never seen a child actress pump out back-to-back movies the way she has been doing. For her sake, I hope they don't overexploit her with all the starring roles she's been getting since her Oscar nomination a year ago.

Caitlin Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 08:55 AM EST

I loved the book. I love Jodi Picoult and I can't wait to see the movie. I am not a fan of Cameron or Alec, but I hope they won't look stupid as the characters. That's what I am worried about. I don't like the way Cameron looks and I don't think she would look like Sara, or at least the way I pictured her. I think they should have got Sandra Bullock or someone that could really pull off being a lawyer/mom. But I'll see it anyway just because I want to know how the writers interpreted the book. I wonder who is playing Jesse or Julia. Everything I've read hasn't even mentioned them. I love JESSE!!!

Stephanie Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 10:19 AM EST

Sofia Vassilieva is who they say may play Kate

kelsey hession Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 01:58 PM EST

i hate to say but this cast is horrible diaz cant play a mother
sophia cant play anything at all.
dakota fanning has more talent then this entire cast.
its a shame to see my favorite book embarrassed in this way.
this is possibly the worst cast ever.
i hate it and i will not see the movie

Kali Mon, Mar 3, 2008 at 06:45 PM EST

Umm...I'm not so sure these are the best choices for the characters in the book. Alec Baldwin...isn't he a drinker in real life, and the sisters are much too young looking to even sell the characters whatsoever, and i like Cameron Diaz, but for a mom?? did the casting directors not see her in the holiday?? I think maybe the whose cast needs to be re-thought.

megen Mon, Mar 3, 2008 at 06:40 PM EST

I really don't like any of the cast choices, alec is way to old to be playing campell alexander, and the girls look way to young. It's not that I don't like the actor/actress but they don't fit the part...its going to ruin the movie!

nicki Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

I agree with one of the comments cameron would play the part of Julia much better, but I think Alec should stay in the part he is.

Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 09:19 AM EST

Yay yay yay! It will be much more true to the book now - Elle was way too young to play Anna. I can understand Dakota not wanting to shave her head and I'm so glad she didn't! Now if they could only to some shifting around with the other characters...if they must have Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin they should change their parts to Julia and the father. I heard Joan Cusack was in talks, she'd make much more sense as the mother than Cameron.

Elle Ann Tue, Feb 19, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Is Dakota being a Prima Donna not wanting to shave her head? I have a feeling that her real reason was not wanting to play second fiddle to her little sister since the younger sister would be the star of the movie.
Either way it makes her seem like fame is going to her head.
I hope they nix the older bro part as it was a ridiculous, unnecessary subplot. I also hope they nix the medical condition of the attorney as it was also unneeded and made a major part of the book unfactual as a person with that medical condition would not be allowed have a drivers liscense. The ending of the book was nonsensical & ridiculous.I hope they will rectify the inconsistencies in the book and the things that don't make sense in the real world. If you hate endings that P.O. you don't watch the movie.

Stacie Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 12:56 PM EST

Love, Love, LOVE Abigail!! Can't wait to see it, but I will read the book first.

Roxana @ CelebrityAxe.com Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 06:36 AM EST

Incredible. This is a good news anyway!

linds Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 09:27 PM EST

i'm kind of upset that the fannings might not get to work together, but they picked a great choice to fill elle's role in. either way, it would have been a wonderful movie with brilliant actors. =] the fannings and abby are great!!!

Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

This news makes me really excited about this movie again. I love the book but never felt like the Fanning sisters were right for the parts. Abigail is a much more likely Anna. Now if they could just replace Diaz. I like her, but she does not really fit the part.

Heather Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 06:31 PM EST

This is great news! I just read this book a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I was very excited to learn that they are making a movie, but when I found out the Fanning sisters were going to be in it was very disappointed! Abigail will be great, and much more age appropriate. Although I'm not too sure about Cameron Diaz, she seems too young to have a 13 and 16 year-old daughters? I wonder if they will cut the part of the older brother.

Sally in Chicago Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 04:32 PM EST

Why do they use the same little girls to do little girl parts? Aren't there other little girl actresses?

Aimee Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

Loved the book, I can't wait to see the movie! Between this and The Lovely Bones...Some of my favorite books are being made into movies! I hope they are done justice.

Skye Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:39 AM EST

My bad then. Sorry I thought Dakota was acting as Kate. My bad.

Skye Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:37 AM EST

Sofia Vassilieva is not acting as Kate is she? I thought Dakota was acting her...

mandie Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 10:50 AM EST

Dakota looks 12, and Elle is frickin 10 years old. Those fannings have always looked young. Abigail is brunette like Anna and will actually look 13. And Sofia Vassilieva will actually look 16 and not be overrated as Kate.

Melissa Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 06:48 AM EST

Loved the book and was so totally surprised by the ending that I wished I had never read it. Will not see the movie!!!

Dylan Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 01:05 AM EST

I can't stand that annoying brat. And all of her movies have sucked. Dakota woulda been better.

Laura Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 10:41 PM EST

I like Abigail Breslin better for the role than the Fanning sisters, but then who's set to play Kate?
