Minutes before it was set to commence the West Coast meeting to discuss its tentative deal with producers, the Writers Guild of America announced this year’s winners in outstanding film and TV writing. Ethan and Joel Coen’s No Country for Old Men took the prize for best adapted screenplay, while Diablo Cody’s Juno won for best original screenplay. HBO’s critically lauded series The Wire won for best drama writing, and 30 Rock earned the best comedy prize. Other WGA winners include Mad Men (best new series), The Company: A Story of the CIA (adapted TV movie), The Colbert Report (comedy/variety writing), and The Young & the Restless (daytime serials). The WGA’s annual awards fete was canceled this year in light of the strike.
