Your 2008 Coachella lineup

Jan 22, 2008, 08:18 AM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: In Concert, Music Biz

After months of speculation, the 2008 Coachella line-up was finally announced Monday. Grabbing the headlining slots? Jack Johnson, Portishead, and Roger Waters, who will play Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety. The Raconteurs, Kraftwerk, and Death Cab for Cutie grabbed warmup slots. What happened to the much-rumored My Bloody Valentine reunion?  Perhaps Love & Rockets is meant to be some sort of consolation prize. We're looking into it. Still, there's plenty of Brits represented on this year's bill, including welcome returns from The Verve and Spiritualized. There's also a fair share of repeat performers, tent regulars Justice and M.I.A. among them. Full list of bands after the jump...

I went to all 3 days. Anyone who was "protesting" this year's line-up is a fool.

It was a fantastic show, and Jack Johnson PWNed.

Kraftwerk was awesome. Aphex Twin was spectacular. The Stars rocked.

Roger Waters was AMAZING.

You're all so incredibly stupid and lame.

Cheers,

Agree or disagree?

I can't wait for Coachella! I'm looking forward to almost every band playing this year! I just saw Murs play with the Living Legends not to long ago at the Fillmore. The show SOLD out and Murs recorded live footage from the stage. It was so AWESOME! You can see the videos on his myspace hosted by WWW.KYTE.TV

I can't wait to be at COACHELLA! WHEW!

JUSTYN Giachetti Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 05:36 AM EST

CHROMEO, METRIC, PORTISHEAD, M.I.A, SIA,- ALL GOOD.......
BUT NOT EVEN IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS RAGE, OR CHILI PEPPERS! WTF? IT'S MEDIOCRE THIS YEAR- THE BANDS ARE GOOD- BUT NOTHING WORTH QUITING YOUR JOB FOR!!!
DANG IT!

I am really excited, and I found a playlist of most the artists playing, just to get me in the mood.

Hey I just heard Austin TV, Sunday line up, from Mexico City. They're awesome. I'll be there on Sunday to hear them again.

Jason Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 10:36 AM EST

I do agree..the line up sucks! As for Jack Johnson I've seen him in Oahu at The Kokua fest and it was great. If your in vacaton/kick back mode Jack does it. Free your mind.

Deb Sat, Feb 9, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

Gotta say, Love and Rockets are about the only band worth seeing. I've gone every year and this lineup is pretty shity!

John Cross Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

To the idiot who suggested that a 50 year old picked the Headliner,no,we over 50s would have picked Cream or Led Zeppelin or maybe Human League or White Stripes,Squeeze or the Foo Fighters...not Jack Johnson. But your opportunity to hear the entire Dark Side of the Moon by Roger Waters should stop your uninformed whining!

chris Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 06:13 PM EST

We go from the chillies and a R.A.T.M reuion to Portishead & jack johnson??? They won't get nearly as big a crowd as they did last year.

angie Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

does anyone know if lily allen or rodrigo y gabriela are gonna be there on the 3rd day?

Jesse Graham Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 01:14 AM EST

saturdays going to be fun with boys noize and kraftwerk but..... jj? come on

So the lineup is different and Im not really into Indie rock. Oh well, because Sasha & Digweed, the Verve, Fatboy Slim, ROGER FRICKIN WATERS, Sandra Collins, Diplo, that will keep me smiling. I dont care if Waters cant sing anymore, when were you planning on catching his next performance??!? It's been 25 years. He won't play again. This is epic, so what if the overall card is a bit light.

ashley Mon, Jan 28, 2008 at 05:58 PM EST

F all you Jack Johnson haters! Don't go, we don't want ya anyway!

todd Sun, Jan 27, 2008 at 06:23 PM EST

this line up is horrible, the headliners are good, brett dennen and death cab are good but the rest are garbage

Watermelon Wolf Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 03:26 AM EST

You people are funny. Look past the words Jack Johnson..I know it's hard, but if you keep reading the set list goes from good to great. In the past I have never been into Coachella, due to the fact that the acts were often just common radio pop fare from the 80's and 90's. ( Rage, Chili Peppers) But this year there are some of the greatest indie and progressive rock bands of TODAY!, Animal Collective, Battles,Islands, Akron Family,ManMan the list goes on. If you have never herd of these bands then you HAVE to go..These are probably the best live bands out there; they give amazing, energetic, and fresh performances that would put Anthony Kiedis to shame. This line up will change what you listen to, you can go ahead and take The Cure and Kraftwork off the top of your playlists and put on some Battles, you owe it to your ipod and you owe it to yourself.

Papa Ricardo Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 09:35 PM EST

jack johnson is a great artist, but not a headliner. he would be nice as like a warm up band. and then maybe radiohead headling.
poor decisions by coachella committee.
they could have had better headliner. who knows of portishead? They're ok, but not like rage or the chili peppers last year.

Jimmy Bean Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 09:15 AM EST

Roger Waters..Dark Side Of The Moon. I'm feeling that. Portishead headlining over Kraftwerk? One decent album and one trick does not a headliner make. Is that all it takes nowadays? Doing Jack s**t for years?
All in all, not enough to raise a pulse.

adam horn Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 01:28 AM EST

I agree, Jack Johnson is wack but I'm particularly excited for Portishead

Lauri Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

Speaking of live performances... found a blog that does a Top 10 list every week, and this week's is Top 10 Live Performances from 1998-2008. They mention some pretty good picks, if you're bored the link is http://ruckusmusic.wordpress.com/2008/01/23/ruckus-top-10-012308/

Lola Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

Pure Pink Piece Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

wow. my heart broke when I heard this lineup. what happened? At first I thought it was a fake line up - one of those funny ones that name silly bands that no one wants to see. i was shocked to find out that this is the real line up. *sigh* first time in 4 years I wont be going =(

luis noriega Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

jerry v Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 11:57 AM EST

The Headliners SUCK! The entire line-up in it's entirety doesn't suck though, alot of great smaller acts I would like to see, but not at a venue like coachella

jess Wed, Jan 23, 2008 at 11:28 AM EST

WOW! this lineup stinks. Granted, there are some awesome bands on here, but overall disappointing. Usually I'm eager to hand over my money for the lineup, this year not so much.

boys noize! institubes crew! ed rec crew! Deadmau5! Sasha & Digweed! Erol, Fatboy Slim, Teenagers, NYPC!

yes please!

amad Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

man i am so mad all the line up sucks
this year jj come on

david Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

Justice is more of a headliner than Jack Johnson. I predict a big exodus to the dance tent from the main stage when JJ takes the stage. Maybe NYC Coachella with Radiohead will vindicate the organizers bc they screw up big time with the main acts here.

Dana Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 09:22 PM EST

i gotta say last year's line up was definitely better.. when you have Rage and the Chilis playing, you know its gonna be an amazing show. i'd be pretty stoked to see aesop rock, the verve, and slightly stupid though..

Dood Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 08:05 PM EST

This year SUX big time. Jack Johnson....I mean come on. Compare it with last year 2007- RATM
2008- Jack Jonhson
We should all go simply to boo him!!!

MRV Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 06:02 PM EST

Not going this year! First time in 4 years! Line-up sucks!

Kaitlin Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 05:54 PM EST

THE BEES. and STARS. this is going to be great

Jen Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Sure, the big name headliners draw people in but it looks like that there's plenty of upcoming and unknown bands that could be worth checking out. I personally know 1 band who has been accepted to play and they're very excited :-). So, yes, I'll give them a plug : Electric Touch (who are playing on day 2 of the festival) - http://www.myspace.com/electrictouchmusic

John Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

THE VERVE....yeah kids..

gabrielle Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Kraftwerk!!! Love and Rockets!!! I'd pay just to see those two acts <3

Andy Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

No one is worth $90 this year. Waters can't sing and isn't the same without Gilmore. I live in Indio and this will be the first year I don't go. I'm very disapointed.

chuch Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

this year sucks balls. count me out. chale!

j Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

jack johnson is a real disappointment. maybe they went with more mellow bands so they didnt end up with a bunch of rage heads there like last year.

Kera Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 03:14 PM EST

Dang, I was so excited for this. What a let down.

Derry Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:59 PM EST

Its not like your forced to watch Jack Johnson..quit being whiny land just don't go!!(very Simple) and let real music fans who can appreciate the other 124 acts go to the festival!!

Peter Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Um. Jack Johnson headline? Who planned this festival, a 50 year old? sooooooo disappointed. wow. I go every year, and I think I have decided to give up on this one.

Rebecca Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

Some decent bands this year. Looking forward to seeing Love and Rockets and The Swell Season -aka the couple from 'Once'.

Omar Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 01:43 PM EST

All those great bands and you cite Jack Johnson as headliner??? Gimme a break. Real music fans will be thrilled by this great lineup, in particular the Verve and Spiritualized.

lily Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

i have all the respect for the artists and bands playing at coachella, but i was SO disappointed for the headliners. i mean come on now, jack johnson?

Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

I'm kind of disapointed with the line up this year, however I am looking forward to seeing Scars on Broadway.

amy Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

i think this article would be a lot better if you pointed out the fact the verve will be there, not silly jack johnson

Carlos Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

I gotta tell you, given past lineups on this festival that I look forward to every year, I'm kind of unimpressed. Especially considering My Bloody Valentine isn't performing.
