The Golden Globes are off!

Jan 7, 2008, 07:39 PM | by Nicole Sperling

Categories: Movie Biz, Strike

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has finally announced that this Sunday's Golden Globe telecast on NBC and champagne-soaked dinner are now canceled. In their place will be an hour-long HFPA press conference covered live by NBC News beginning at 6:00 PST. "We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television,” said Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year’s Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled.”

I feel the awards are all about celebraties and not the public. Why do we always have to have these events on TV? Let the stars intertain themselves without the public making over them

jononomous Sat, Jan 12, 2008 at 01:45 PM EST

I think everyone in tv and movies make more than the average smo...so why should the rest of us have to do without entertainment to satisfy the selfish few....hollywood is infantile and the foriegn press are really stupid...no one will watch the press conference but billons would have watched the awards.

kirste Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

I think it would be hilarious if the whole TV/movie industry just stopped. On a very basic level I do appreciate entertainment but I'd really like to see it crash and burn if only to prove the point that it's not as siginificant as they think it is. We need to knoch HOLLYWOOD off it's extremely high horse. Get over yourselves. There's more going on in the world than that. We'll be okay without movies and TV. I think TV worse than it's been in a long time anyway. Movies too. I'd laugh if many highly popular shows got permanently cancelled. It's just funny to me.

Jordana Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 03:58 PM EST

The world is going to dissolve if we can't have celebrities publicly congratulating themselves! What are we gonna do?

I say we ban all award shows right now. They were good for nothing before the strike and will continue to be.

I've been perfectly content without fresh episodes of even some of my favorite shows. The absence of it really puts into perspective how much I didn't really care about TV to begin with. With super serious and annoying shows like HEROES dominating the TV world, I'm happily accepting the strike. I hope it ends with many cancelled shows.

Ryan Ann Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

Just because I like the Golden Globes and Oscars does not make me a loser. Some of you people can go f@ck yourselves!!!!!

ja$04n Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 06:47 AM EST

Are you people for real? By some of the comments here, you'd think the world would stop spinning on its axis if the Academy Awards were cancelled. I hope the Oscars get cancelled, and I hope the WGA holds out all the way through the summer. I hope we run out of movies slated for 2010 and I hope we run out of scripted tv, too. (I say this despite my desperate need for a fix of "Lost.") Only then will everyone will finally see how important writers are to the business. Stick to your guns, WGA!

Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 04:54 AM EST

It's the viewers this year who are suffering from the writer's strike, and the cancellation of the Golden Globes is just the latest symptom. I noticed this week that the networks are airing the pilot episodes of shows like "Bones" and "House." They must be desperate. I don't see why they haven't realized that they are going to end up losing more money from foolishly refusing to share profits than they would probably end up giving to the writers.

Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 01:37 AM EST

Perhaps now would be the time for studio executives to start looking between the coasts for the many talented people who do not wish to belong to guilds, but would love to be part of the entertainment industry.

No One Cares Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

Honestly I could care less if they cancel all award shows from this day forward. I don't even understand why "real" people would waste their lives watching these BS celebs gobbling up awards like they are their gods and then spouting nonsense about how Jesus helped them achieve these petty pieces of polished metal garbage.

As far as these writers go. Honestly 99% of movies and shows for the last 10 years at least have been totally horrible. These writers should be paying us for the crap they injected into our lives over that last 10 year span instead of expected to get paid more for their truely subpar work. I hope they all go down burning the celebs and writers alike.

Gary L. Carlson Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:55 PM EST

Myself, I could not care any less!!!.

The Virginian Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

1. Hey, the strike kind of looks like an undulation of a democratic society. On their next contract maybe the Writers will be better Readers. Perhaps they could also produce their own show in which to air their views, with the help of the Actors, along with a sympathetic Network. Oh, maybe they could use PBS, NPR, etc.

2. I enjoy more documentary, nonfictional, historical, news programming, etc., so that I may learn to help improve society, and my interactions therein, while trying to avoid repeating negative history.

3. Everyday, I pass by memorials of The Revolution, and The Civil War, and I am thankful that we found the ways to make peace. I'm fortunate that I can still talk with my Dad about WWII. And I remember, "freedom" is not "free".

4. Thank God we live in a country which holds Freedom of Speech as a cardinal rule, where we can vote with our hands, feet, and voices. Remember the Tea Party, the Alamo, and Appomattox.

5. So, put down the remote? Go get involved?

chris Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 10:58 PM EST

Does anyone here even knoe what is going on in hollywood with this strike? It seems like everyone here is blaming the writers for ths. All the writers want o do is get paid for what they are doing. Does it not seem fair that a writer can create and write a movie that goes on to make 100 million dollars and they only get 100,000 for it? Also for you out there who are blaming the actors for not wanting to show up, It is not the actors who cancled the show. Let me see a writers strike during a major awards show= no writers to write the show. I am surprised it took them this long to cancel it. And again who really cares about some stupid award show. It does not and will not affect what I will watch on T.v. or on film.

Stacey Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

What people seem to forget is that for many performers AND writers alike a golden globe nomination may be a once in a lifetime event. Not only is it rude to insist on depriving those performers from enjoying their accolades it is downright insulting to pick and choose other deals on the side and allow this tradition to be ruined. I agree writers should be fairly compensated but if you want to make a statement then make no deals until you have consensus not play favorites against production companies and telecasts.

J Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 07:08 PM EST

Scot says the WGA seeks "fair pay for their skills".

I wonder what most of the people here REALLY think of the so-called "skills" of the majority of the TV writers?

The WGA should be careful of what they ask for - they might get it.

Carl Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive! - Sir Walter Scott

In lieu of this recent development, I believe, in turn, the Hollywood Foreign Press needs to put the awards into moth balls until next year and not give any out this year.

I realize this is a political game being played, and the Hollywood Foreign Press is caught in the middle, however, the WGA and SAG are playing a double standard by supporting the Critics Choice Awards, allowing them to continue and air on VH1. They played favorites and displayed total disregard to the Hollywood Foreign Press and their Golden Globe ceremony.

The Hollywood Foreign Press needs to take a stand. I believe politics should be played both ways, and awards not be handed out this year. Politics begats politics. If the SAG wants to boycott the awards, then their members should be exempt from receiving any award. No show, no actors, no award.

phoebe Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 05:37 PM EST

why'd they cancel them?

AmandaB Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

While I empathize with the writers and agree they have a case, it is as Jay Leno said, regarding his own show, that there are 18 striking people putting 130 others out of work. Compromise, and quickly!

Victoria Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 05:15 PM EST

They CANT cancel the Golden Globes. I've been looking forward to them. Are they going to announce the winners on television or what?

lewis walburn Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

You call it the foreign press,. Is it ran my the arab muslims???????ANY WAY IT IS JUST A SHOW FOR ALL THE TRAMP TO SHOW THEIR ASS AND THEIR TITS

Jeff Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

writers blow

Scot Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

The writers are striking for what is rightfully theirs: fair pay for their skills. The union represents far more than they very few who make millions as writers. And SAG is also a majority of working-class actors. Just like most occupations, very few people are making the big bucks. Just because someone works for Hollywood doesn't mean they don't deserve the respect for their skills. And let me tell you, the fat cat networks and studios are ROLLING in money. Giving in to the rightful demands of the union would cost the studios about 2% of their operating budgets, according to outside estimates. For a lousy 2%, the studios are shafting it to the American population that watches TV and goes to movies.

Parker Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 04:01 PM EST

Oh, well, just one of the award shows we don't have to watch to get the results. It's nice to see the writer's strike is having some effect and hopefully hurting the networks.

Ana Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 03:52 PM EST

hola soy española y soy fan de wentworth miller

un beso

vampirejew Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

What a jip. These awards are an institution of the industry. Why are they not being aired? Because of the writers? Do you really need writers to be able to speak before an audience? To know who the nominees are?
This strike can kiss this actors butt!

Lisa Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

I am a total supporter of the writers, but god help them when they come between me and my Award shows!

Wally Anker Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:57 PM EST

Am I supposed to care? I don't.

Stephanie T. Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

You know to be honest, The Globes should be aired so that the writers can "stick it" to the producers.

Greg Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:40 PM EST

WOW... some of you have NO idea what you're talking about! The WGA writers make an average of about $5,000 per year. That's it. Sure, some successful ones make more, but one can hardly call the writers greedy. Secondly, the Screen Actors Guild has to negotiate EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS in a few months. SAG is standing in solidarity with WGA because they don't want to hear from AMPTP (producers), "well, WGA gave up on additional DVD and Internet compensation, what are you complaining about?" in a few months.

WGA is more than willing to take a percentage -- AMPTP wants to pay a flat price, but wants that flat price to be ZERO.

The writers are 95% in the right on this one... and the producers are the ones that are preventing us from enjoying a normal TV schedule.

Tenjed Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I think some people need to get over themselves. Seriously. There are far worse things that could happen if a Golden Globe award show never aired again. How much of a loser are you if you get down because you can't watch Hollywood gloat over itself. For those people, there's always E!

EE Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:51 PM EST

GREED! greed! greed! If you're able to stop working this long, you don't need the money! The everyday common person would be evicted by now. Get real!

It annoys me too Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

I agree with Annoyed With You. While I love award shows and will miss this, hollywood is NOTHING without writers...they are the only ones that do anything productive. I mean the only part you even REMEMBER about movies are the quotes and lines. And obviously we do need them since lately television sucks. And if you think this is a "punishment" I have advice for you: Go outside. Worry about the war in Iraq and who is going to be your new President. Get over your television.

Eric Friedmann Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:39 PM EST

I could absolutely care less that the Golden Globe Awards show is cancelled! I consider the Golden Globe a stupid, second-rate award designed only to feed the already-spoiled actor's ego! Film fans and historians can probably easily recall best Oscar picture for, say, 1967 and 1982 ("In the Heat of the Night" and "Gandhi"), but honestly, who can recall (and who cares?) what the best picture Golden Globe was for last year or the year before? I think Woody Allen says it best about award shows in ANNIE HALL..."That's all they do here (Hollywood) is give out awards! Greatest fascist dictator, Adolf Hitler!"

Annoyed with you Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

If you consider us "being punished" because this is cancelled it is time to get a life. Thanks

RJ Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

Idiots. Get back to work. Or, better yet, fire them all and hire new writers. 90% of the writing in shows today sucks anyway, so not like we'd be missing much.

geriland Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Too bad! I love the awards shows. I hope they resolve the strike soon. Take a look at the big picture and realize that things are changing. The writers deserve a piece of the future, too. No writers = no shows - get it???

Dan Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:12 PM EST

I feel the WGA made a huge mistake. This award show is to honor the actors and many of the actors are supporting the WGA. The WGA should have made this exception to honor the writers friend, the actor.

Rob Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:11 PM EST

I could care less about any show, like most strikes, this has only proven to me that there are better things to do in life but sit on you A@@ and watch TV. However, the sad part is now the vendors, including hotel staff, caterer's, clothing, area stores...etc. will be the ones to suffer. They do not make any money when these big productions are not there and these employees wil not get the hours worked or money needed and earned. When and if the strike is settled, they still will not be compesated nor benefit from the agreement. Personal Greed!

Jeff Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

The WGA is brilliant. Let's get the entire country to turn on us by forcing NBC to cancel the Golden Globes. Isn't it a little hypocritical that the WGA will sign an independent agreement with David Letterman's prod. company, but refuse to sign the same agreement with Dick Clark Productins.

I really doubt anybody cares about the "plight of the writers" at this point. I know I don't.

A.M. Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

Finally, the Golden Globes will get the amount of notice they actually deserve.
The legitimate awards come Jan. 27 when the Screen Actors Guild hands them out.

Gretchen Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:59 PM EST

seriously, what are they losing by not working? will it be made up by what they will get at the end? be realistic - if, God forbid, the strike doesnt end for a year, will what they get make up for losing an entire year's salary? can their families afford that? And if they can, then they obviously arent in that bad of shape to begin with. Grow up, man up and get this thing over with already!

JTR Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:53 PM EST

This is so disappointing. I want the writers to get what they want, but it is such a same to see award shows and primetime television suffering due to stubborn opposition.

I love watching the Golden Globes, but I'm glad actors won't now feel pressured to cross a picket line.

Kim Schwartz Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:45 PM EST

I never miss the show.. BUT, how about reading a great book or playing some games with friends/family? This is not tragic, just T.V.

karen Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

These writers need to get back to work. Fire all of them and hire new more creative ones. Most of writers on strike now are hackers with not an ounce of anything original.

jackie Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

Go writers. Stay strong.

Lib Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:22 PM EST

Maybe we should all stop watching TV until the strike is over... We're the ones suffering, having to watch all the inane crap that the networks are feeding us. Perhaps if organized our own TV Viewers union, and demanded quality TV, the strike may end sooner rather than later!!

Rebecca Lamey Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

A note to those who are glad the awards were canceled because they hate modern TV and/or movies: First, no one is forcing you to watch either of these. Second, this website and magazine are about modern movies and TV, so WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

Yoyo Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:13 PM EST

Testing.

MrDustin Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:04 PM EST

Even with the cancelled show you'll still get your wins, as the news coverage clearly indicates. As for the WGA changing the face of entertainment, it's a bit disappointing to find that one group can affect an entire industry so completely. Why is there only one union for television and movie writers? The same goes for the SAG. Why doesn't there exist a separate union for each --- television and movie actors? Then each medium could be individually affected rather than the entire motion picture industry as a whole. As for awards shows, I agree that they serve mostly to add air to already overinflated egos, however fans also benefit from being able to see such a large gathering of "talent" in one place. Also, without awards shows the seeming fall from grace of "stars" such as Britney Spears wouldn't have had such widespread notice --- wasn't it on an MTV awards show that she started doing the snake/no clothes routine? I want separate unions in the future.

ed Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

I dislike caitiesus, but am sad that the show is cancelled. I love the red carpet coverage and was looking forward to a Sweeney Todd win.

J Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:32 AM EST

Congratulations WGA!! I hate award shows! Next, please try to get the Oscars cancelled! You are doing a great job in getting all of the estrogen ghetto dramas run into the ground as well! About time! We need more family-oriented entertainment like game shows and reality TV. Keep up the good work, WGA, and soon the alphabet networks will be changing their programming for GOOD, and canceling those shows where you did such wretched writing!! Keep it up!! Solidarity forever, WGA!! P.S. I hear they are hiring at Burger King!

dan Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

I think Hollywood as a whole is greedy, corrupt, and ridiculus. How many people in the U.S. starve while they complain about 6 and 7 figure salaries. Give me a break.

Harpo is Oprah backwards Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

I was counting on watching waifs and fatties crawl the red carpet, but whatever-- there are still the Oscars.

ghoulie jr. Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 10:45 AM EST

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, get a life. down with corporate scum!!!!!!

Moe Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

As fun as the Globes ceremony is, I'm happy that the WGA has stood their ground. No awards show = no big advertising dollars for the networks! hahahahaha

Ryan Ann Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

I am so sick to death of this writer's strike. Just because they can't come to terms doesn't mean everyone else has to suffer. I can deal with the Globes being cancelled (it is a fun ceremony) but please, please don't cancel the Oscars. I have been watching the Oscars since I was 12 years old. It is like the Superbowl for me. I know some people think it's very long and yes, it is. But I love the fashion and the montages of the movies and the funny dialogue of the hosts and of course seeing who wins. To cancel the Oscars would be like canceling the Superbowl. And if the Oscars are cancelled many millions of dollars would go down the tube due to marketing. PLEASE WRITERS DON'T CANCEL THE OSCARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EF Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 09:35 AM EST

This stinks! First the new season of 24 has been delayed and now this. I really hope the Oscars don't get canceled.

Razz Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 09:28 AM EST

whoever wrote that ridiulous statement for Camara should be fired. With war, poverty, foreclosures who wants to watch these people (some criminals) get an award for acting out and getting outrageous salaries.

krikky Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 09:10 AM EST

It's too bad that this had to happen this year, since 2007 is, in my opinion, the best year for movies in a long time. Oh well, at least we got to see Danny-boy get his best actor award at the Critic's Choice ceremony last night. And if the Oscars ceremony is cancelled too, there will be HELL to pay!

E Miller Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 09:07 AM EST

Maybe the writers still being out is not such a bad thing. The entertainment & sports industry salaries are way out of proportion to the general public. Most of the time the average person can't afford to buy tickets to attend the event. Instead of whining about this or that show being cancelled, GET A LIFE - read a good book, play games with family & friends, TALK to your spouse, SO, your kids, get off the couch & take a walk. enjoy nature.

Fan Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 08:57 AM EST

It pleases me greatly that the show itself is cancelled and not just the telecast. The thought that they might capitulate to the writers and actors, and still give them their big party and celebration (just not televised) - nauseated me. The vast majority of successful writers are very well compensated, and this strike is nothing but organziaed labor run amock. Here's to the producers' alliance for sticking it out and not giving in to these ludicrous demands.

AH Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 08:56 AM EST

I think it is really funny that everyone here is calling the actors and writers greedy, and supporting the big, multi-billion dollar conglomerates.

kim in kentucky Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 08:19 AM EST

of course most actors wouldn't show up -- too many need the writers to compose their "ad-lib" witty remarks -- although, the Critics Choice awards went okay on VH1 last night with only a few no-shows

daniel Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 08:15 AM EST

I think this strike has come to a very dangeorus point. For an award show like the golden globe to be called off for the WAG is sad and I think it only gives the writers the reason and more power. Truly SAD!!!!

Kevin Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

You can't blam the writers for this cancellation. Hollywood has been using and abusing writers unjustly for decades and something has got to give. Hollywood spends $300 million on PIRATES 3 yet I'm sure the writers (including the script doctors) only made a fraction of a fraction of that production costs. Where's the love for the writers or is $25 million to Mel Gibson per film worth more than the average $500,000-1.5 that a writer receives on that exact same film? Or the $1 billion International gross of PIRATES 3 where I'm sure the writers made less then $10 million? Who's being greedy now?

bob Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 07:30 AM EST

the strike goes on because both sides have two things in common they are both hard headed and greedy.also saving face has entered into it and will only worsen as time goes by.if a show has to be cancelled why cant it be deal or no deal this show should have been dropped after its first airing.

Dave Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 07:07 AM EST

Should the writers still get support to pen projects like "I Know Who Killed Me", "Because I Said So" and "Evan Almighty" can be made? I know people can counter by saying, well without them we get reality TV, but really is it that much worse than "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry"?

FlaAl Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 06:37 AM EST

If you're going to cancel the show, cancel it! Don't announce the "winners" on the side, don't present awards in absentia. If the performing arts community doesn’t care enough to prevent cancelling an event that happens “once a year” and grants what may be “once in a lifetime” recognition, then none of them deserve the accolades.

Razvan Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 05:01 AM EST

Interesting..the amount of anti-WGA lit up there. Almost as if a few guys were paid to drop such comments and create a negative public view of the WGA.
Frankly, everyone suffers here, and yes, it IS for the money, but how the heck can one say that without writers Hollywood will go on ?? They ARE the reason I like on show and dislike another. They're the reason people stay tuned for 1 , 2,3 series of a show or losae contact with it after the Pilot. The writers are essentially the difference between a good movie and a bad movie.
They create the characters, the dialogue, they way everyone interacts with each other and with the set, and , from what I read so far they're paid zilch when it comes to internet, Ipod, all kinds of digital streaming of THEIR work. And that's not fair.

Tiffany Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 05:00 AM EST

Go WGA!!! I'm going to miss seeing the Golden Globes, but the faster entertainment industry breaks down, the faster the studios will realize they need to give the writers their due and quit being greedy.

A Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 04:16 AM EST

I'm very sad that it's not gonna air. I've been waiting for this award show for months and it's just less than a week from now and the show is WHAT?! CANCELED!!!! I'm still hoping that it could change.

Wil Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:55 AM EST

This all boils down to 2 diffrent groups being greedy, in the end no one will win!!
wilc5231shop.com

e4ia Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:32 AM EST

The Oscars will be next. The two sides have no plans on talking and there is no deal in sight. I blame both sides for being stuborn and greedy. It is time to end this lame strike now!

ceej Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 02:25 AM EST

YAY! Now maybe Americans will tune into more important matters, like the upcoming election and the looming war with Iran...

TJ Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:50 AM EST

All of you WGA supporters -- wake up!!! The strike is about making MORE MONEY! These are not people struggling to make ends meet, or fighting for benefits (like medical insurance). They just want more money to add to their already inflated salaries. I have no pity for the Guild members. But I do feel deep concern for the thousands of laymen losing their jobs and livelihoods evry day as a result of this stupid strike. They're the victims here, not the WGA members.

Kenny Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

The Writer's deserve their far share but come on! I personally view them as extremely greedy. Why boycott the award shows that reward your talent (yes, including you, writers!). If the Academy Awards telecast is cancelled as well I am going to be completely upset and angry. Why can't they just come to an agreement already? At least I have American Idol to watch, hah.

Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 01:08 AM EST

I was really looking forward to watching the Golden Globes as well. I agree with the comments that the WGA is slowly losing support by basically forcing the actors to not attend the awards show. The Golden Globes are one of the more exciting awards shows. The thing that is most upsetting to me is that first timers (like Ellen Page or Diablo Cody, who will most likely win their awards) won't be able to experience the excitement that comes with attending their first big award show. I used to support the writers, but due to their strike, now all of America has to be subjected to American Gladiators and no awards shows. Thank you writers! Stop whining and get back to work!

Michael Tue, Jan 8, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

the globes were always the least legitimate of the big award shows anyway...let them televise the razzies instead...the one award show where they count on the stars not showing up...haha

Luisito Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 11:34 PM EST

Television makes a lot of money. I think it's about time to fairly share that success with the essencial people who makes that possible, THE WRITERS.

joe Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 11:29 PM EST

all of these crazy people talking about how the writers are greedy, etc. need to step back and think about what they are saying. if YOU were in their shoes, you would want a cut of the business as well. think about how many times you have quoted a tv show. or couldn't wait until the next episode so you would know what happens next. or wished you had a life as exciting as the characters on your screen. the writers do that. they deserve as much money as they can get.

Silv Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 11:26 PM EST

It may take the repercussions from the results of this cancellation for the WGA and the studios/networks to achieve an agreement. However, both sides are losing sympathy as to the rest of America they are both seen as a greedy, overpaid business. Don't be surprised if the Oscars are not aired either.

Um, lame! The Golden Globes is the best awards show, with all the TV and Movie people present, and half in the bag, it's way more fun than the Oscars. They wouldn't not show the Oscars, so just postpone the Globes until this darn strike is resolved. Just give the writers what they wat and so righteously deserve!

WGA for the win! Plus, we know some network people are loving this news- they keep trying to make awards shows shorter and shorter...

Hollywood peeps will now just have to make it a "Sunday" party instead of a "Globes" party that night.

I am all for the strike but I think they made a mistake being this aggressive- they need the public support in order to get what they want and by being this aggressive in not working to make an agreement with the globes they are shooting themselves in the foot. They should have at least made the effort for the public. The tide will start to change on them if they do not watch it. I love the award shows and if the Oscars are cancelled and the upcoming TV season for the fall is affected then a lot of them might not have jobs for too long because people will realize they don't need the television and not come back to it when it finally ends. I for one am realizing I can do other things and am realizing I don't need to watch the TV shows I thought I did. There are even some shows I might not watch when they finally come back. I am pro writers but they need to get back to the table because I might be willing to change sides if it goes to much long- they look greedy the longer it goes on.

Will they still announce the winners?

alex Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

i'm so upset, this is the first awards ceremony i look forward to, and not it's cancelled, and what's worse is that we don't get to see the amazing fashion, and the often fun speeches from the winners who deserve to be recognized. please find a solution before the oscars.

This strike is changing the face of Hollywood entertainment: no awards shows, no Summer pilot season, and, probably, no Fall season either. I think it's safe to say, network television will never be the same again. Might be goood for the WGA or they may have screwed the pooch. Time will tell. Either way it goes, it has no meaningful effect on my life.

Adam Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

This totally sucks! I'll pay the writers to do the golden globes for god sakes! As long as they don't cancel the oscars.

Dre Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 10:12 PM EST

i mean dont get me wrong, im all for the writers, heck they make all my shows fun to watch, but i NEED MY AWARD SHOW FIX!! just make sure you guys get this whole thing settled BEFORE the Oscars!! PLEASE!!!

Golden Globes cancelled? GOOD! There are too many "celebrities" whose egos are far greater than their talent, and we don't need to listen to their empty blather.
If the Grammys and Oscars are also cancelled, all's well and good. Most "entertainment" today is nothing but crap.

For the first year in three years I was going to be able to enjoy the show during my winter break. Darn it all! I support the writers, but this is a bummer.

Mozz Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

The WGA brings down the GLOBES!!!! SCORE!!!! YESSSS!!!

Nate Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

um...who cares, I'm waiting for the Oscars!

ken Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:33 PM EST

if the writers were truly ethical, then it would be all of them back to work as opposed to only some - as is currently the case. now the way it is, it's fine for some of the writers to go back to work, yet everyone else (non-writers) is still supposed to boycott. the writers are self-serving hypocrites, in my opinion.

Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:32 PM EST

WGA -- Go back to work!!! Is a few dollars (to add to your $$$$$ salaries) really worth the harm you're causing everyone else? WGA = GREED

TB Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:29 PM EST

I think it's ridiculous that the actors refuse to attend the event. If the writers want to strike the show, then let them. Why should everyone else be punished because of the greedy WGA? The WGA needs to be shown that Hollywood will go on without them. It's too bad SAG can't stand up for themselves.

cheryl Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:28 PM EST

i am very disappointed in not seeing this show. i am a union member and really support the writer. but it is one thing worth mentioning...tv is not all the great anymore and is hardly worth looking at; so this show will be sorely missed. reality shows is not always entertaining all the time every single day. someone in hollywood needs to get it together. give up the royalties and get on with some real programming and where are the stars besides those on the silver screen??? they must be bored out of their minds! not everyone new is good to look at on television...use some inovation PLEASE. PARDON MY SPELLING!

pai Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

Darn, I'll miss seeing them honor something as inane as Green Card as best picture live!

TV Addict Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:13 PM EST

I think the WGA is making a big mistake. Isn't this the perfect venue for actors to stick up for the writers and have the world hear it?

J Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:08 PM EST

Very sad but atleast something is being televised. I'll miss the fun speeches. I support the writers but please find a solution soon. I look forward to awards season and this definitely dampens it.
