Simon Cowell: "The public eventually are gonna get sick to death of me"

Jan 9, 2008, 03:24 PM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: American Idol, Music Biz

Simon_lSo just how long does Simon Cowell plan to be a fixture on American Idol? The surly judge addressed his future with the show on a conference call today, telling reporters he finds the audition process to be "absolute torture," and hinting that he may be hitting the road once his contract expires in two years. "The public eventually are gonna get sick to death of me. Nine years is probably enough to inflict on anyone. Can the show exist without me? Absolutely. It would probably get better."

Cowell also spoke about Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard, and Katharine McPhee no longer having record deals. "It's a reflection on the unpredictability of the record business. Fortunately, we got it right more than we got it wrong.... There's no scientific way to explain what happens. It's a reality show and what happens at the end is also reality." He used the same theory to explain lackluster sales by the most recent winner and runner-up, Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis. "Naturally, I'm disappointed that they didn't sell more copies or that neither artist has caught on fire," he said. "What you want [is] a Carrie [Underwood], Daughtry or Kelly Clarkson, where they're competing with the Mariahs. It didn't happen. Am I surprised? Not particularly.... The public decided it's not necessarily what they wanted, so we have to try to do better this year."

AMERICAN IDOL WOULD NOT BE AMERICAN IDOL WITHOUT SIMON!!! Are you kidding me Simon?? America geting sick of you?? You've obviously slipped a gear! You are the only thing that keeps AI from being another Star Search...(cancelled twice)! Even David Archuletta couldn't save Star Search,,,the judges were just too nice! lol It desperately needs your perfectly worded truth and even your nasty moods. No one can pull it off like you can and be so loved for it. Not even Nigel! lol PLEASE DON'T GO!!!!

BEA BECKS Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:25 AM EST

SIMON cowell is the most gorgeous guy ever, if he leaves than there wont be much of an audience. Thats the only time I disagree with him, when he said that people will get sick of him.

I LOVE SIMON COWELL, HE ALL WAYS TELLS IT LIKE IT IS. GOOD FOR HIM.

Emily Sun, Apr 20, 2008 at 12:43 PM EST

I think that if Simon leaves the show, It won't be the same withou him!It depends on who they replace him but the ratings might be as good. I like Simon and I enjoy the show and all his critisim, for some reason he is always right about what he tells the contestants.it will be sad if he leaves but I wonder what he will do next.

Beryl Brereton Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 08:45 AM EST

What about bringing some hilarity to the Music World or to the world of non-music? What about an Old timers' Idols contest–Rock wannabees from yesteryear can show case their talent (or lack thereof). It would make a change from mamas and papas traipsing their offspring to all the idols auditions and mouthing off at the judges for their so-called lack of musical ears when said progeny are tossed out on ears deaf to all criticism regarding their shower-time efforts. Imagine an Old Timer's Idols with streams of those businessmen and women of all shapes and sizes (egos being the biggest of all) -leave their boardrooms for a walk on the 'wilder" side of life on the broadwalk of Fame, Fortune Or Failure. It would make life interesting for a lot of bored, money-oriented oldtimers who had dreams of being rockers in their time, only to find that sitting on rockers was more their style through lack of musical ability or maybe just because there was no such a contest in th 60s, 70s...

Fri, Mar 21, 2008 at 02:20 AM EST

hi how are you today

Scott M Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 05:52 PM EST

I like Simmon I think that he is very fair in his judging and gets right to the point. Unlike Paula who seems to always want to discuss what a contestant looks like. I am also tired of Simon getting interrupted everytime he is voicing his opinion of the performers performaance. Like he said the show is a REALITY show, and in my opinion Simon is being REAL.

PATTY Tue, Mar 18, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

SIMON KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT AND MAYBE AMERICANS NEED TO LISTEN TO HIM AND PEOPLE WOULD HAVE AND KEEP RECORD LABELS AND GREAT CAREER LIKE CARRIE HE IS AWSOME AND I DON'T BELIEVE AMERICA WOULD GET TIRED OF HIM OR HIS GOD'S GIFT OF HIS CAREER. SO KEEP ON SIMON.

acissejear Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 10:24 AM EST

Kat McPhee's vocals are amazing. I bought her album & LOVE all but 1 song. She is better off now w/out the AI record deal b/c they never properly promoted her album. I only ever heard two of the songs on the radio & there were others that should've been released. On amazon.com they compared Kat to Mariah, but with the raw emotion that is no longer heard on Mariah's vocals. Also, I absolutely love Daughtry's album and he is AMAZING live! I personally boycotted the show last year b/c I was disappointed that Taylor Hicks won. I don't deny that he is a talented artist, I just don't think he is a "pop" artist that would be popular across all genres. I thought that's what AI was about, being popular with all genres. Ideally the most multi-faceted artist with amazing vocals and stage presence would win. Simon has said recently that it is a popularity contest and he's right. The Prom King or Queen don't always become the next big thing w/out help along the way. Nothing is free.

Kimberly Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

Simon has it right--most of the time. But he is NOT the pulse of the nation! Taylor is an incredible talent and to see him live is to truly appreciate him. His fans know that BETTER than ANYONE ELSE, including Simon Cowell. Taylor "losing" his contract is so not a big deal. He knows what he wants and how to get it. He has made his fans PROUD and returns his everything back to us ten fold. Taylor doesnt have to worry and neither do his fans.

Louise7 Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 02:34 PM EST

Melinda Doolittle doing fine. She did releases her first song on i Tunes My Funny Valentine. She will released her first album June of 2008 If you are a fans (BackupS) of her come join us to support her for her new career. www.melindafan.net also you can listen at the third radio show we have with her first page at the website you welcome

vaselisa Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 09:55 AM EST

I would like to add to that two artists that impress me: Taylor Hicks and Josiah Leming That's right Josiah. For the simple reason that they are outstanding memorable soulful and creative. They both have a groove going on. We know that there are thousands of very talented musicians and composers out there. I wish they were showcased instead of same bland wannabe. I would rather hear To Run by Josiah any day. By the way 36,000 plus fans and adding. agree with me.Josiah Leming apears to be an artist to watch. Some day we all will say remember when we saw him first. Queen, Beatles...Josiah? Please check out Eva Cassidy she was and is the world's purest singer. I was introduced to her through a comment on a board. Please if you have a name of an acceptional singer or band please post.Lets srart a grassroots buzz Peace, out.

Cameron Fri, Feb 29, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

I think most of the blame for failed Ex Idols record sales go to the labels themselves. I think their perceptions of what they think sells are not necessarily the songs these idols would probably like to sing.

Danielle Reid Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 01:33 PM EST

i officially think that everyone here wouldnt have started to watch American Idol without Simon Cowell.
He's and amazing judge and again is only human, their are two ther judges why do you pick on Simon? just because he tells the truth without sugar coding it, its tough his job. And i bet that none of you people would last two days let alone seven years. And for a fact the main reason why people watch American Idol is to see who's going to dress in stupid outfits and how Simon will reply to them. i idolize you Simon, your honest and people need that. continue what you do best!

LORETTA MONROE Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 10:27 AM EST

SIMON IS DIRECT AND TO THE POINT I LOVE THE WAY HE TELLS IT. THE WAY IT IS! I REALLY WOULD LOVE TO MEET HIM ONE DAY I KNOW HE WOULD LOVE ME.AND I THINK HES KINDA CUTE.

cccc Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

Simon is blunt, but if he wasn't and held everyones hand then we'd be watching these mediocre talent and wonder why no one is telling these people the truth. This would make it very boring to watch and unrealistic. I think it's great that Hick's supportors aren't wanting to watch, perhaps some real talent can win.

Dan Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 03:25 PM EST

Simon, first of all the only thing that you have shown as being a judge is that your honesty towards the contestants sometimes is too over the top and I believe your afraid of Paula showing you up as being a judge fear is what you thrive on as a judge not knowledge of the talent otherwise you would see less of hating the songs and more of the best of what a contestant is bringing, after all it is a reality show not a simon cowell show, if you don't return after your contract expires I honestly believe that without your honesty and blunt remarks with take away from the show, I mean who else can interrupt Paula more than you. Even though you are hated by many you are respected by the contestants or should I say feared for your comments, that are honestly from who you are what you believe to be true and forthright. Don't take the grinch out of the mix of judges, so stay. But please listen to a wider variety of songs. Get to know their meanings; and please stay

As one if the many who voted for Rubin and Taylor I can tell you why record sells were low. For one thing the records were very hard to find after their wins. When Rubin won Clays' CD's were at the check counter at Walgreens when I sked about Rubins CD I was told they would in later in the week . The same with Taylors' Do I Make you Proud CD. wheres' the videosfor the song?

where is melinda doolittle???? she has been the best and most engaging of all the "idols".

James Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 03:25 AM EST

In Simon's defense, I have to say, atleast he is looking at himself honestly. Maybe he even matured a little over the years. Of course the making it is a matter of exposure and public taste. Neither Simon nor anyone else has control over the latter.

beachpup Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Taylor Hicks also sucked. Bravo twice.

beachpup Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

I always thought Jordin Sparks sucked. Good job America.

vaselisa Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 12:09 AM EST

In response to bob w. I did listen to Taylor Hicks and loved all his song on his cd. By the way I also love AFI and Ozzie, nirvana and Queen. so what does this say.about my range of likes , Isuspect many listeners dabble in different sounds as we mature. As to tis new season I wish they showcased the good singers and did did not polute with mediocre pop. I wish edgier singers more avangard. VANILLA ICE CREAM IS BORING.

bob w Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Taylor "Spazmo" Hicks lost his record contact because he should have never had one in the first place. The fact that he won only proves that most IA voters are complete idiots with no taste in music what so ever. Now he can go back to singing at weddings and at the grand openings of Walmats in Hicksville USA. Good riddance to the bum!

nursehope Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 02:25 PM EST

I've heard Blake's CD on the air a few times in my area, sound is different, I like it more than I thought I would.

stacey Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

I think simon makes the show more interesting! I think its hilarious how he rips on people. I think simon should always stay on the show!!

Lori Williamson Thu, Jan 17, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

I found out that this season 7 of American Idol that they have planted professional singers in the competion so to make it more exciting, that is bad because other good singers won't make it thru because there is not enough room there are 12 pro singers added and I found out there names. What a shame I loved this show, I don't know now.

I agree with the comment that this is a SHOW - it's just karaoke, people. The few singers who have come to make a living from AI ~ ? How many? And how many of them make a living at SINGING? Some just seem to show up places to ride on their 15 minutes of fame. Come on, people, Simon is not the enemy, he is fantastic fun. He can say anything he wants! What joy! What freedom! That people got dropped from their labels??? Who cares. You were on a televised karaoke competition! You get props and respect, but a glamorous life afterwards? No. You still have to earn it. Just my opinion.

Harry - Jan 9,11.37 PM: Completely agree with you! That audition show, last year, without Simon was absolutely embarrassing! Paula and Randy couldn't handle it, it was the most weird situation...!!!

Simon: I will never gonna get sick of you. I can't even imagine this show without you...

Simon might not be a kind critic, but it's not his job. He can be harsh and needlessly blunt. But if these people auditioning for AI are serious about a career in show biz, they have to learn to take that criticism early on. You have to have a thick skin. I was not impressed with McPhee or Hicks--Daughtry was robbed, but is having the last laugh now. And even folks from that season are doing quite well: Kellie Pickler had a respectable debut, and so did Bucky Covington, and so did Eliot. In the end, it's the talent that prevails, not winning a contest.

Someone mentioned that Hicks was fun to watch on tv, and that's why he won. I'm inclined to agree with that. He won because he is an entertainer--he should have his own show, like a variety show. He'd be great!

I read an interview with Katherine in which she described how difficult it was for her to make art out of the songs she was given to sing. She said that it was hard to come up with her own style, given that the songs were first introduced to her by other singers' demos of them (because she doesn't write her own music). I think that is a very honest illustration of how she sees herself amongst other talents in the industry: it's hard to make it. Idols who go on to record albums have to do what every first time recording artist does and that is too establish a style and a fan base. Hicks and McPhee don't deserve more than one album to establish those things. Good luck to them though. And they're also alongside other idols on this new karaoke system so if you are a big fan you may be interested in this link: www.techtogo.com

I can't stand Simon but he is right about the music industry it can be fickle. However, he is a brillant critic. McPhee (talented, but lacking personality), Hicks (trash to me), and Studdard (nothing spectacular). I am an American Idol fanatic I purchased all their CDs. AI doesn't support artisit like they're supposed to. Jennifer Hudson has been a huge success, Fantasia (CD sales okay) is a huge success on Broadway, Elliot doing outstanding on the radio, and George Huff doing great in gospel. The winners of AI may not become "idols" but contestants on AI are making their mark.

lets not forget that Jennifer Hudson won acting awards they were not based on cd sales so until she puts a single out and then I think her name should be thrown in the mix oh and by the way she wasnt that good in
Dreamgirls kind of overrated if you ask me.Ruben will do great in gospel, Talor will do good in adult contemporary and well McPhee and Jordan I could care less about, they are both very boring artists.

I think Season 6 just went in a bad direction with all the guest singers. No one got to know the contestants.

It's now hurting the best album out of Season 6, Blake Lewis's ADD. That kid was labeled just a beat-boxer, but he has strong song-writing abilities (wrote all but one song on the album) and the beats are super catchy. Even the ballads are spot-on (How Many Words is perfect). The major radio markets claim to not have his CD to play and that's a shame. Just because he was AI 6 doesn't mean he wasn't any good.

He is cool. But I am very cucious. Why did he post his profile on a celebrities and wealthy website named
"MarryMillionaire.com". What is he looking for there?

Does anyone find it odd that Kat, Taylor and Ruben are out just a few days before the seventh season begins? Particularly, one that's suppose to have a lot of promising talent? I don't think even Justin Guarini, Diana DeGarmo or Bo Bice was let go around this time.
