'Entertainment Tonight' pulls Heath Ledger party video after PR firm applies pressure

Jan 30, 2008, 10:03 PM | by Hollywood Insider

Categories: Movie Biz, TV Biz

Heathledgervideo_l In response to industry pressures, Entertainment Tonight and The Insider have pulled a planned segment on the late Heath Ledger, according to a spokesperson for the shows. Celebrity PR firm ID Public Relations had released a statement on Wednesday, condemning the Paramount-produced TV shows for planning a segment that was to feature a video of Ledger allegedly under the influence. IDPR, which has represented Ledger, contends that ET "purchased [the two-year old video] for a large sum of money in the hopes of stirring up a salacious and exploitive story about Heath, which would win them big ratings on the first day of sweeps." Reps for ET had no further comment.

When contacted by EW.com before ET announced it would not air the video, ID partner Mara Buxbaum explained via e-mail that "those who knew Heath know he was a kind-hearted, immensely talented artist, and a devoted father. He tried to live his life quietly and with humility. Certain media outlets' attempts to exploit and profit from his death is shameful and in the poorest of taste. We implore the media and the public to let this grieving family bury their son in private and with dignity."

In its statement, ID included the e-mail addresses and office numbers of ET executive producer Linda Bell Blue and Paramount executive Brad Bessey in an effort to "pressure" the shows to pull the planned segment, which was due to air tomorrow. Although ID represents a raft of A-list talent, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Ellen Page, and Ben Stiller, Buxbaum would not comment on whether that pressure might have also included a boycott of the show. —Adam B. Heath Ledger may still be alive today if Hollywood wasn't hiding all of their boys' problems when he was alive. I read in the NYTimes today that "a video of Heath Ledger hanging out at a drug-fueled party two years before his death would seem to constitue must-see material....But when such a video ended up in the hands of the producers of "ET," the program declined to broadcast it 'out of respect for Heath Ledger's family.'" Why isn't Hollywood pulling articles out of respect for Britney Spear's family and children? Maybe he'd still be alive and his kids would still have a doting father if they'd gone after him like the do (present tense--she's still alive) Brittney Spears. Also, why didn't we hear anything about Owen Wilson till he'd practically killed himself? This is a double standard that is not fair to anyone. (In an odd way favors the girls who hopefully take the opportunity of cleaning up their acts before the insane pressure puts them over the edge.)

tina hood Thu, Feb 7, 2008 at 09:45 PM EST

i was a big fan of heath ledger.. and i am glad i didnt get the chance to see that video... i think it is crappy that E.T. and the insider would even show that crap.. i mean come on he just died for crying out loud and even if he has been gone for along time they still dont have any right showing that kind of crap.

Jeffrey Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 12:10 PM EST

Now there's an idea. Boycott ET/The Insider and never watch them again. I haven't watched ET in YEARS and I've never watched The Insider. ET used to be a cool little show about the entertainment biz, but it's complete trash TV now. I don't think I've watched it since the early 90s. I'm glad there are plenty of sensible people posting comments about this story. I'm not glad that we have to have this story in the first place. RIP Heath Ledger. Even if you're a casual viewer of these ridiculous shows, please boycott them now. More viewership only gives them more advertisers and insures their undue "success". Thanks.

Phyllis Shamoon Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 12:14 AM EST

I am so glad to see that the majority of commenters have refuted what ET stands for. Several years ago, I would just turn off the TV and maybe set the timer for when this nastiness was over to go back and watch something decent. Now, I got rid of TV altogether. Wow, what a difference in the quality of my life! What the media did to us showing 9/11 footage non-stop for weeks afterwards was truly brutal, but at least it had a semblance of necessity. Bashing dead actors is so very low. I prayed a lot for Anna Nicole and her family that they could be comforted. God bless Heath's family too with comfort and the knowledge that these people have a big problem, they will do anything for money.

Me Sun, Feb 3, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

Heath Ledger was an amazing artists whose works will be remembered for years to come. Regardless of who he was, I would just like to pay tribute to his incredible talent and kindness. He was an admirable actor.

Second, I would like to point out that the media coverage of this event is discouraging. Let the family grieve their loss on their own, in the peace they so desperately are seeking.

And to those of you heartless enough to judge Ledger's current, post-death whereabouts: he's dead. I understand that you might have your own ideas of where he may be now, and for what reasons (Jesus is the answer and others, I'm talking to you), there is a kind way to put into words what you are trying to say. His family is grieving, and to coldly state that he is receiving eternal damnation--whether true or not--does nothing but intensify the family's sorrow. Speak with love, dudes! While I admire you for stating your beliefs so bravely, state the truth with some compassion.

Doug O'Connor Sun, Feb 3, 2008 at 07:10 PM EST

I'm glad that Entertainment Tonight decided not to show this extemely tasteless video with somewhat ambiguous content at the least. It is time for all these "Entertainment Shows" to use better judgment when it comes to how they report on the lives of celebrities. I think it's time that all in the media just leave Heath's family and friends ALONE. to grieve in peace. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding his tragic death, Heath needs to be accorded all the dignity and respect of anyone who has passed away. Let Heath Ledger rest in peace, and his memory live on as an example of a talented, accomplished actor, and a genuine, loving and caring human being.

Nick Sun, Feb 3, 2008 at 02:38 PM EST

Many people run as fast and as hard as their wallet will let them. That kills many and as far as being a great father? He was a sperm donor with the money to run from anything that wasn't fun to him. He was human and could "pretend" better than most.

Holly Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 11:53 PM EST

I also just want to say that it must be some life being a tool like these jackasses at ET/The Insider, etc. What a career and what a lousy way to make a buck -- a buck off someone's life. I really don't need to know all about HL's alledged drug problems -- if it is true, it doesn't make me think any less of him really; it just tells me he was a human being like all of us are, and that succumb to life's temptations like we all do sometimes.

It certainly doesn't make him a bad person or a bad father either. Also just because someone has a good amount of money and whatnot doesn't mean they have it altogether -- there's more to it than that, and we are always people it seems that think life is greener on the other side.

Holly Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 11:40 PM EST

What I would really like to know is what are we going to really gain as a society by seeing a tape like this?

I mean what are we trying to get at? It's so unbelievable that ET/The Insider (and their parent company Viacom) would really feel that this is okay and that I guess they think that the viewer just doesn't care what we view anymore.

At the end of the day he was a person who had a daughter, family and friends who loved him -- he was flesh and blood like all of us, and no one wants to be raked through the mud when they die. Any one of us would want to be able to have died with some dignity.

Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 05:34 PM EST

Of course, the video was tasteless and disrespectful to his family. Nevertheless, I would bet the farm that the autopsy reveals signficant drug use which resulted in Heath's death. I am so tired of seeing these "stars" who have everything in the world succomb to drugs and partying, poor poor examples to the young people who admire.

forsakenfoe Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

So whatcha gonna do about it? As sleasy as these shows are, how many weak minded people made Jerry Springer rich?
Yeah, say it's poor taste and all your "How dare you(s)?!" Now you've created a monster and there's no knights with swords to slay your dragons... My son has to live in your world. (To Everyone) Try not to screw it up too much, you're making it hard for the people with consciences to clean up your messes! TY - Ohio

karin Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

It says the video was 2 years old? Who cares what he did back then? And he didn't even do anything according to people who saw the video. I never watch shows like Entertainment Tonight and The Insider and I don't read those kind of trashy magazines either.
Just leave the man's reputation alone and let the family and fans grieve.

HEATH FAN Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 02:13 PM EST

LET ME JUST SAY..HEATH YOU HAVE TOUCHED SO MANY PEOPLE THROUGH YOUR CRAFT IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER AND YOU WILL BE MISSED DEEPLY!! AS FOR THE MEDIA..FOR THE SAKE OF MATILDA, MAKE THE MEMORIES OF HER FATHER GOOD ONE'S! HEATH WAS A DESCENT PERSON WHO TRIED TO STAY OUT THE THE MEDIA FOR REASON LIKE THIS...THEY EDIT THINGS TO LOOK AND SOUND THE WAY THEY WANT FOR NO REASON OTHER THAN RATINGS. SO PLEASE "ET" THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR DOING ACTORS ARE REAL PEOPLE WITH REAL FEELINGS!

tired Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 11:38 AM EST

Don't let the media crucify any one else, like they did Anna Nicole! I was heart sick for her! They would'nt allow her to grieve for her son and then tore her apart when she died. he did not deserve that and neither does Heath. Nobody deserves that except for the Hitlers and Osamas!!! If you do only one good thing in your life, allow people to rest in peace and allow their families calm reflection.

Sat, Feb 2, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

These shows should be banned. They are heartless, money-greedy companies with no compassion. And to think the public would want to see that... I think majority would be disgusted. It's not the first time they have done this, and I'm glad they are getting called on it. Bunch of thieves!!!!

LET HEATH BE REMEMBERED AS THAT WONDERFUL ACTOR HE WAS....And those who have nothing good to say..GO GET A LIFE!!! You guy's are BITTER!

L. A. Worthington Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 06:00 PM EST

I am glad you pulled the video of Heath Ledger. The part of the video that you did show didn't even show him doing any drugs. That was taped 2 years ago so that doesn't even prove that he was still doing illegal drugs when he died. All that video does is show him in a bad light. You people should think about his family and his daughter. What do you think that would do to his daughter years from now when she is old enough to understand. I think it is horrible that you were even thinking about showing that tape. I think it is sick and very insensitive to his family, friends, and fans that loved him and still love him. You people should think about other peoples feelings rather than your ratings and checkbooks.

Stephanie T. Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 05:04 PM EST

Meant to us? He was just a really good actor. Acting was his chosen profession. He's not a martyr. He should be remembered as an actor.

Helen Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST

"There's a light that never goes out..."

Sleaze mongers like ET/IN can never take away what Heath meant to us. What they can do is damage a little girl who will one day search for who her father was, and that breaks my heart. Our fathers and their memories are precious to us. Please pray for Heath's little girl.

Heath. I am sorry. All week I have searched for unknowable answers on search engines, stared at endless photographs of you, and re-watched most of your films. All the while gasping and horrified. No. I can't quit you. Do you know how few people have had that affect on me? Most of them I have held, but you I only knew through your craft and the shine of your beautiful light. I heard your song and felt it's magic.

I am sorry if my need to find you and grieve your loss in any way contributed to this ugliness.

Your sorrow has passed, and your fans will have to make peace with that. Now it is time for us to help remind your little girl how special that was.

Nick Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 03:45 PM EST

Gary Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 03:44 PM EST

I wonder why they're more sensitive to Heath Ledger than they were Anna Nicole Smith.

tired Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 03:38 PM EST

what is your point? Jesus is not the topic! Or dating! You people are nuts! This is all about Heath and the way the media has to drag everyone though the mud when they die! The media and a lot of others, have a sick bag of morals! What they need to do is remember what caring felt like. Do you remember? Is your heart completely blackened with no spot of redemtion? Ask your parents what it was they taught you. I think they would be sad to really know what you do. Shame on the media! Shame shame shame!

Carol Greco Renton, WA Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 02:56 PM EST

I'm glad to see they pulled the plug on showing the clip. It is the right thing to do for his family who's life has been forever changed. Knowing that ET makes money on things like this, they should be commended for doing the right thing. Good job ET. You know I will be watching.

To Jesus save lives: Jesus was a rabbi who did not want to be worshiped. Read Matthew more carefully please.

Stephanie T. Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Whether he did or did not take drugs, Entertainment Tonight should just leave him be and let his family mourn. I watch the show and I was appalled at how they milked Anna Nicoles passing. I mean she was not the brightest lighbulb but still what type of journalism is that? It's hardly entertainment journalism.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS COVER-UP OF DRUG ABUSE IN HOLLYWOOD.

katrina Fri, Feb 1, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

At this time of sorrow over Heath's passing and the horrible media coverage, I thought kindness and cocern for our fellow human beings might take first place. But, again I am wrong. Some of the most ignorant people have to say something stupid! Deh Fence and bilbo for two examples! Could you be any more ignorant or heartless? What you say, affects people. His family may see the awful things you said. So, in the spirit of affecting people with our words, YOU ARE BOTH STUPID! IGNORANT! CARELESS! SAD EXUSES FOR HUMANS! Heath was a person of incredible talent and caring. He will be sorely missed! See you in heaven Heath, that is if I make it. Goodbye for now.

I for one am so glad the video wasn't shown. Even the part that was shown prior to be announced that it would air on Thursday was bad enough. I couldn't believe that ET would stoop that low. He should rest in peace and his family shouldn't have to deal with that. That was 2 years ago. The power of the buck is something else!

Lies, exploitation..I wonder what this man did to deserve this.It all seems so unfair because he seemed like such a nice person..if anyone didn't deserve this kind of exploitation it's him. The only thing that makes me happy is that Heath's fans know better than believe the garbage tabloids print. At least he knows that there are many people out there who respect him and who love him despite all the controversial the media is trying to create around him.

HEATH LEDGER MAY YOU REST IN PEACE. YOU WILL BE MISSED. TO KIM, SALLY AND HIS THREE SISTERS (KAOS), MICHELLE AND MATILDA. I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOST. HEATH WAS A WONDERFUL, TALENTED, AND GREAT ACTOR. I AM A NUMBER ONE FAN. EVEN THOUGH I NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET HIM--JUST THE SENSE I GET FROM HIM WAS HE SEEM SO HONEST, CAREFREE, GIVING, CARING, DOWN TO EARTH KIND OF GUY, AND WHO SEEM TO HAVE SO MUCH LOVE TO OFFER. ALSO, ATTRACTIVE AND A NICE PERSON. I WISH I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HIM. HOWEVER, I KNOW HE WILL BE MISSED BY SO MANY. HE LEFT A GREAT LEGACY--SO, LETS HONOR HIM. LET HIM REST NOW AND LET THE FAMILY BE AT PEACE. LEAVE THEM ALONE AND LET THEM HAVE THEIR PRIVACY. YES, IT IS NOBODY'S BUSINESS AND STOP TRYING TO MAKE A BUCK. TIMES LIKE THESE REALLY SICKENS ME ON HOW THE MEDIA CAN BE. REALLY YOU NEED TO BACK OFF. TIME TO LET IT REST........MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU. MY HEART CRIES--THIS HAS BEEN REALLY HARD......TAKE CARE....

Trust me on this one. We are all sick and tired of sensationalism! Let this sweet guy die in peace and quit judging other people! Infact, if you are smart you will give some kind of statement in that reference!

Hats off to a news station for once doing the right thing! While I am also left wondering if the decision was made for the right reasons or because of pressure from A listers- it is a refreshing change that for once a news station would do the right thing and put a man and a family that deserves much better before their tv ratings. By not broadcasting this piece of trash (there is no proof that he was doing the drugs, just that he was in the presence of people doing so) youre allowing a Heaths loved ones to grieve without any unnecesary stress and upset. I think in the end that Heath (or any other actor/actress) deserves the right to be laid to rest with the respect and dignity of any other human being that has given much less. While its easy for his fans to feel a deep connection with Heath as an actor and be curious about the events leading up to his tragic and untimely passing, we only knew a small part of him. His family and those who truly knew and loved him still have to carry on

Well, People.com has jumped on the bandwagon and are publishing horrific stories of Heath in an attempt to turn a buck. They mention a "Heath Ledger friend" in their story, but of course that person has no name... By being a Heath Ledger fan, I don't have to know what went on in his personal life, it's not my business or anyone else's. Let this talented man and his grieving family have peace. Any salacious stories will not diminish the worldwide love and admiration for this talented, sensitive actor. My heart and thoughts go out to his family, Michelle, and their daughter.

I actually saw a little bit of footage of the Ledger video and my first thought was " How dare ET do such a thing at a time like this ".....I'm glad that someone wised up and made the right choice NOT to air this video....Had they done so I wouldn't have watched ET ever again

I was highly disappointed to hear of what was in work from the ET team regarding Heath Ledger. This has cast a large, dark shadow on their credibility of the human kind. I’d expect that type of reporting to be done by much lesser establishments than ET. Shame on you ET for even hosting the thought of adding to the grief of one of Australia’s greatest sons and clearly someone who had such a private life and who did not hurt anyone.

Signed with full name and respect to the dead.
