Guillermo del Toro addresses rumors about his directing 'The Hobbit'

Deltoro_l This morning, just 24 hours after New Line and MGM announced that Peter Jackson will executive-produce The Hobbit and its sequel, EW met with Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-nominated director of Pan’s Labyrinth, who is rumored to be a possible contender for taking the helm. Del Toro flew into New York from London (where he's in post-production on next year's Hellboy II) to do press for the Spanish ghost movie he exec-produced, The Orphanage. He gamely answered our Middle Earth queries.

EW: There’s been so much speculation about who will direct these movies. Have you been approached?
GUILLERMO DEL TORO: You know, I think I’ve been abroad too long. I’ve heard some rumblings, but nothing official. I don’t want to think about it because it’s such an eventuality. It’s the only Tolkien book I read. I tried my best to read Lord of the Rings, the trilogy. I could not. I could not. They were very dense. And then one day, I bought The Hobbit. I read it and I loved it. So it would be a privilege. But listen, I wish I knew. At this stage, after Hellboy II, I’m unemployed. [Laughs]

So when you hear about the project and your possible involvement, your reaction isn't: "Oh no way!"
No, no, no, not at all. I do get those reactions on other things. Many things where people say, "Well, what about you for this?" And I go, "No, that’s not a good match." But I met Peter and Fran [Walsh, Jackson's life/creative partner] when we were trying to do Halo. I think what they’re doing in New Zealand is amazing. What they’re doing, in terms of the way they approach filmmaking — the way I see it is, it’s Hollywood the way God intended it. Because it’s a filmmaker’s dream and a filmmaker's facility. So it’s heaven. The question is: Will I go to heaven? I have no idea.

The idea of you and Peter Jackson working together is enough to make every geek’s head explode.
It would make my head explode! But you know, I think it’s an eventuality. I would love to, but as my agent says, "You’re currently unemployed." [Laughs]

Alfonso Cuaron for the Hobbit movies....I think that Azkaban was the best Harry Potter movie so far.

It will be great if Del Toro becomes a directory. I've heard about other canditates, but Del Toro is really best.

You do have a good point there Panch but it IS a sequel of The Lord of the Rings and i think that Peter Jackson can make this into an adult film also because not ONLY kids read this book as you know. I only hope that IF Del Toro directs he will add more magic to Gandalf because in the book he uses Blue Fire and explosions to ward away his foes like when he's cuaght in the tree with blood thirsty wargs at the bottom, will they keep the wargs the same?, or when he destroys the goblin leader. PJ had a very bad usage of Gandalfs magic in The Lord of the Rings and with these movies coming up it is VITAL that he (or she) puts in these parts to show how powerful Gandalf really is while keeping the veiw and feel of The Lord of the Rings and I doubt that will mess it up. Nany McPhee was a good film for kids but was it good for adults? sure adults might think its 'cute' but we can't have that IN the hobbit even if it was written to be a kids book because not only kids are waiting for The Hobbit.

I am not excited at all about Del Toro. What about the director of Nanny Macphee? THE HOBBIT after all was intended to be a children's tale.

smaug Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:33 PM EST

PJ, i think, is the only director for this movie and Del Toro has a way to different and twisted way of view for his films than Jackson does and you can see this in Pans Labyrinth. I don't think he can earn my trust for doing this movie unless he does an amazing, extremly well job with this film and i hope Peter is incredibly involved with telling Del Toro (if he directs it) what he thinks the film should turn out to be. I don;t want this to end up being a tragety ecspecially with such a great film plot on his hands with a book that touched many's hearts and i don't think he can do this as well as PJ (who did direct the sequels to these films, by-the-way) the second film in my opinion can have a better chance turning out good with Del Toro because it hasn't been plotted in any REALLY BIG Tolkein story plot. Well we'll see how this turns out and hopfully its like the other masterpeices PJ managed to magnificently produce from the incredible and extravagant imagination of J.R.R Tolkein

PETER JACKSON SHOULD DIRECT AND BE A EXEETIVE PRODUCER!

Peter Jackson Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 05:23 AM EST

Peter and Fran should direct. It just wont be the same without them giving their absolute best in The Hobbit.

Azagol Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

I don't want any director who hasn't read the Lord of the Rings to be in 1000 feet of the Hobbit movie production studio.

P Jones Wed, Dec 26, 2007 at 09:58 AM EST

The fact that del Toro couldn't make it through LOTR makes me nervous. It tells me that he doesn't fully appreciate Tolkien and may not do justice with The Hobbit.

As Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are executive-producing the films i think that Guillermo del Toro should be ok because they are always consulting among each-other!

Orca Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 09:35 PM EST

"Evil Dead" is a great film: fun rebel film-making. I liked Raimi I really did - then along came a "Spiderman"... If The Mighty Kiwi can't do it, I say give the Mexicans a go!

if he had actually read lotr, i'd be on board....i think he needs to have a better understanding of lotr to see how the hobbit fits to make it work...

Wendy Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Last time I watched Pan's Labyrinth I said if Jackson didn't direct The Hobbit then Guillermo ought to. I wouldn't mind Cuaron either.

Jenny P Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

lol my thoughts exactly about tolkien, guillermo.

rotten tomatoes Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

Rotten Tomatoes---that fine pillar of journalistic excellence.

aubie822 Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

I'm a huge del Toro fan after Pan's Labyrinth. I was disappointed after I saw I Am Legend to learn that he was supposed to be the director but had to drop out. It could have been so much better (it was good though!)

Now, DT for The Hobbit would TOTALLY make it up to me. That could be cinimatic genius/devine.

tha plow Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

i don't think it would be that different than if jackson directed it himself. although, i hope they stick with the book as much as possible. the book is very light-hearted, much more than the lotr trilogy. can del toro pull this off? his films seem to be pretty dark.

noeofurbusiness Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

He was said to be found at a millionaire&celebs club "MEET RICH DCOM" not long before, and he was hot there.Quite a few girls and ladies wrote to him.OMG!

Secondrink Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

*guh* that would be awesome. Thanks for hopping on that interview, EW!

Matt Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

folks, over at rotten tomatoes they are saying jackson will be the executive producer of The Hobbit, and they are hinting strongly that Sam Raimi will direct.

Kelsey Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 02:46 AM EST

Pan's Labyrinth was harsh, but INCREDIBLE. Add in that we've got PJ to (HOPEFULLY) keep the same location, costumes, looks, etc. as LotR? Well... it's the next best thing to PJ doing everything. :D

smaug Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:43 PM EST

Ya I could go with this also they'd be good together to create the hobbit

Rick Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

Reply to Jim Dorey:

Jackson is producing both District 9 and the HALO film, so why can't he just Exec Produce this film? I mean, as much as he loved the Middle Earth Universe, do you really think he wants to repeat himself? Anyway, I think Del Toro is an inspired choice to helm this project. If not, Cuaron would be fantastic as well, if he cares about the source material.

T.L. Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

Del Toro would be great! As would Cuaron. As would Weir. And Scott. And Raimi. And some guy named Peter Jackson.

Rahul Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:45 PM EST

This geek's head is ready to explode. I'm disappointed that Peter/Fran/Philippa won't be doing these movies, but the prospect of del Toro really excites me.

Jim Dorey Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

There is no way that would happen. C'mon.

Peter Jackson will direct himself. But by all means, keep building the hype guys!! :-)

I wasn't big fan of Pan's Labyrinth. How about Alfonso Cuarón? I like his stuff far better. Y Tu Mama Tambien, Harry Potter 3 and Children of Men rocked.

Stu Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

I'm not a geek, but after seen Pan's Labyrinth and being a huge LOTR fan. The idea of a Jackson/Del Toro pairing is indeed blowing my mind!

Traci Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

Wow, this really needs to happen! Peter and Guillermo for the Hobbit!!
