School superintendent says 'Survivor' "lunch lady" lied

Dec 17, 2007, 06:57 PM | by Mike Bruno

Categories: TV Biz

Denise_lMillions sat with their jaws agape waiting to hear who would win $100,000 as Survivor China's most popular contestant on the series' reunion show Sunday night (it was James) -- but perhaps none was more agape than Nancy T. Lane's. Lane is the superintendent of the Douglas Public Schools in Douglas, Mass., and she says that her employee, "lunch lady" contestant Denise Martin, lied on Sunday's live broadcast when she stated that she was not given her job back as a cafeteria worker upon her return from taping the reality show and instead was made to "clean the toilets" as a janitor working night shifts. At the end of the show, host Jeff Probst gave Martin $50,000 on behalf of producer Mark Burnett to help get her life back on track.

"Yeah, I watched my own jaw drop when she said that, because it's absolutely not true," Lane told Hollywood Insider. Lane released a statement on Monday, on the Douglas Public School District website, explaining that Martin was actually promoted to the position as custodian –- a promotion Lane claims Martin asked for herself. Reached for comment, CBS responded: "The comments made by Ms. Martin on the program were compelling and sympathetic. If these statements were misleading or false, we hope that she will take immediate and public steps to clarify her remarks."

Lane's statement says that "Martin held a full-time position as a custodian prior to her participation in the series, and she returned to this same position upon her return from China." The statement continues, "Although Mrs. Martin was a cafeteria employee prior to her selection as a contestant, she asked to be considered for a promotion to full-time custodian, and was promoted to this position on March 30, 2007. This promotion came with additional benefits and a higher salary. Following her leave, she then returned to this same position." Martin has held the new position since August, when she returned from taping the show, up until last week, when she traveled to California for the live Survivor broadcast, according to Lane.

"I can empathize, having been a working mother," Lane said. "It's tough to work those night shifts. But she took the job; that's the job she took leave from [to do Survivor]. If she wants to go back to the day shift, she should apply when one comes open."

Lane says she spoke with Martin on the telephone on Monday afternoon and that the show's fourth-place finisher was apologetic, but that "she did not explain why she said that to my satisfaction," Lane explained. "It's difficult to grasp. We did nothing but encourage her. She took leave for almost three months, she was given additional times off when ever she needed it. Now she says this on national TV.... Douglas is a nice little town. Everybody was rooting for her, the local paper was bending over backwards with positive articles. Then to have it end this way. Talk about a letdown."

Martin was still in California on Monday, but Lane says her job is waiting for her when she comes back home on Friday. "I told her, 'I think we have a few things to go over,'" Lane says. "I might have a few things I'd like to talk about."

all along i thought that denise didn have a chance. i couldnt stand todd and thought that she deservered the title of survivor cuz i didnt hear a lie. i was done when i heard that lie. way to go, idiot.

Donnie Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 10:05 PM EST

one more thing, she is so ungrateful person. pgee took her to shaolin temple and dennis even said it was the most rewarding thing that happened to her life and she ditched pgee twice and not take her when she won award challenges? come on...then on i knew she is ungrateful person without any conscious. at the finale, she talks about amanda and todd being dishonest...hmmm...were u honest? it's easy to blame someone than ur own. at the live in hollywood, she still plays sympathic card, i lost my job. so many kids came up to her, how in the world kids kids would come up to her and bugging her if she is a custodian and works at night? she lied about that too. she lied about making $7/hr which she makes $17/hr. lied again. the reason she had a mullet to jeff, that is probably a lie. in national tv, she tried to pimp herself to get a better job and asking if anybody needs help please let her know...does she have to stoop that low and advertise herself like that?

Donnie Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 09:51 PM EST

after reading all this commend, i have to make my own commmen about dennis. it's a shame that she had to lie on the national tv with millions of live audiance. thinking back on the show, was everything that she said is a lie? when jeff asked her about why she has a mullet and she said she had to have a short hair cut at work while she want to maintain long hair for her husband to look pretty...that is 100% lie. she wasn't working at the cafetaria then and she lied then and she is lying now. she is probably a dyke and living in a small town she is probably a closeted..so she married hugely fat man to compensate her insecurity. throughtout the whole show, she make sure everybody knows that she is a lunch lady and doesn't make much money. she constantly played sympathy card. every other word that came out of her was how little she makes, how poor she is, make $7/hr. throughtout the competion she played this sympathatic card and we all chanted for her to win. i was a fool.

jenn Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 08:25 PM EST

i love her but do not support liars...

SANDY Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

I can't believe Denise would both lie and twist her story to make people feel sorry for her. I respect the fact she played the Survivor game well and almost made it to the end,, but that respect turned into disappointment and regret when she tried to "con" the public. SHAME ON YOU DENISE

Brina Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

I guess she thought she was still playing the game at the live finale show. She sure played us and I guess her husband was in on it too, because he didn't jump up and say, "that's not true" he clapped right along with everyone else. The lunch lady had deceitfullness in her all along she just saved it for the end of the game at wich point she to forget her so-called morals......L-O-S-E-R! I was routing for her throughtout the whole game. She PLAYED us all!!!!

Esme Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 07:59 AM EST

I had her pegged from the beginning and clearly I was right--one of the most unpleasant Survivor contestants ever! So glad she didn't manage to win. Yuckkkk!

Tracy Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

THANK GOD all the comments are on one page!!1

Cali_Dude Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 04:49 AM EST

to: JinB and others--The reason why I commented on this is that it is really so funny that all of you are so caught up in a TV SHOW. That's all it is. I lived in LA for 20 years and I dealt with the TV "biz". I guess I look at it from a very different angle, that's all. It is just a TV Show---and everybody is "upset" or "caught up" with the lies, the BS and what not over a TV Show. TV Shows are nothing but carefully crafted "stories" to do one thing and one thing only---create ratings, so that they can justify advertising revenue. Think about it---Without advertising revenue, TV Shows on broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, FOX, etc would not exist. They need ad revenue to survive. These TV Shows will do anything to increase ratings---because that is the "game". And that's all what these programs are designed to do. It is a well crafted business that survives on Ad Revenue. So, Denise got 50K+--big deal. She played the "Hollywood" game! And remember--Its a just a TV Show.

Nate Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 03:57 AM EST

who cares, Todd still won!

Kristin Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 09:05 PM EST

I don't understand why so many people are saying Denise did not lie. I saw her on t.v. admitting that yes, she did lie. What I don't get is WHY? What a hypocrite, telling Todd he needs to clean his conscience! And she gave Courtney her vote because of Courtney's honesty. Whatever!

j.j. Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 08:10 PM EST

No reason to speculate -- she's asking for the public to forgive her for lying and that the $50,000 be donated to charity instead of going to her. She lied. She apologizes. She asks us to forgive her. She's not taking the money.

Billy Bob Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

Bec, you got that right!

Billy Bob Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

Bec, you got that right!

bec Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

It's one thing to lie in the context of the game. That is acceptable. But to lie to the public? It demonstrates that she has no morals. I'm glad she didn't win.

IndyMark Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

Longtime, if I remember right, the winner received one million, second place got $100k...the $900k decision was anything that might cost them 1st place for 2nd. I don't know what they do now that the jury votes on the final 3 instead of the final 2.

Jane Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

It does make me sad that now that public opinion has changed about Denise, there are so many nasty comments about her weight. Criticize her character or her remarks she made at the reunion show, but it's really juvenile and pathetic of all of you who are saying so many nasty things about her appearance. Reminds me of the Rosie/Trump feud--when Trump couldn't think of anything else bad to say about Rosie, he basically resorted to schoolyard taunts ("oh yeah, and you're fat too.") Ridiculous. Remember, she was voted in the top 3 for popularity before this whole lunch lady/janitor brouhaha.

longtimesurvivorfan Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

Can someone agree with me on this--I thought every Survivor contestant received $100K just to be a contestant on the show. This was announced back in the 1st couple of Survivors...I distinctly remember players talking about there $900K decisions they were making and laughing about some of the losers who would be there 33 vs 3 days and walking away with the same payday. My friend recently disagreed with me, but I'm almost certain this is true. Any other real fans out there know what I'm talking about?

heidiho Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

She admitted to lying and is going to supposedly donate the money to charity. Do a search for the story headline: Survivor lunch lady won't take $50,000.

Billy Bob Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

I want my pound of flesh! Denise can certainly spare plenty! What a pathetic sham. Why not hit the street corners of Boston, Mass and hold out a tin cup you bum! Can CBS afford the payout? Yes of course! But unlike James and his $100,000 thank you much like Rupert's Million Dollar All-Star Thank you, Denise did NOT bring in the ratings, no doubt more people tuned out because of her. God I still can't get the flabby gut and cottage cheese thighs thoughts out of my mind. GROSS!

Rik Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

The Game was still on for her, it seems.....

Jeff Tomson Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

I don't watch the show so I don't know any of the people involved and did not hear the comments made first hand. But I am reading about it and the comments that you folks are making on both sides of this argument. Did anyone actually check the schools board meeting minutes for the period of time in question? Promotions, leaves of absent, and any personnel changes are always made public at our school board meetings and the paper even reports those changes every month. They are a matter of public record, and are accessible.

PG13 Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

That fat mullet headed dyke! I took her to Shaolin Temple and she dissed me twice! Good thing she didn't make Final 3, she might have won! Courtney called you spot on and she should retract her apology. I wish I could take back the Shaolin Temple trip. Obviously you're ungrateful to your employer as well as your fellow contestants. Merry Christmas Denise hope there are some Bird Fetuses in your stocking!!!

Law Offices of Larry H. Parker Jr. Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 11:18 AM EST

Denise knowingly made misleading statements in an effort to gain favor. The Janitor gig was a big step up from lunch lady, she doesn't like it...LEAVE! She certainly doesn't deserve any bonus cash and YES she IS A LIAR! What's the real reason you want the lunch lady gig back Denise? Free left over tater tots and pizza? Looks like you've been feeding yourself and your family that way for a long time! What a Loser! Hey $50K or no $50K she's a Loser in more ways than just Survivor!

emmers Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

I've been had! I really felt for Denise and thought she had "lost" her job. While I don't have the expectation that someone who would be on Survivor would possess high morals, I didn't think that they would still be playing the game after the game was over. That was morally bankrupt behavior and I suspect she was playing to people's sympathies thinking she could cash in. SHAME ON HER!

Dutch Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 11:05 AM EST

Courtney said it best: "Denise S-ucks at Life"! Lame hairdo, Lame game play (Unless playing for 4th is your strategy) and now hypocrisy. Hopefully Survivor didn't cut the $50K and they renig on it. I think though 4th place gets $25K anyway. Sad thing about this is it's another Johnny Fairplay, no one is going to believe any "sob stories" regardless of their fact or fiction. Way to go Fatso Mullet head, glad Amanda shanked you!

Alexa Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

Looks like she was trying to outwit, outplay and outlast to the bitter, lyin' end

uhhum Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

Poor writing, with no quotes of exactly what it was the lunch lady said. As it's written it looks like just a worker who is not thrilled with working.

cynic Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

Sorry, I don't lie. And how do you tell a whopper like that, where it is very simple to be outed. Femullet dykstra just ruined her chances for future TV 15 minute of fame $$$$'s.

happyman Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

For all of you that defend her read this!!!

In an interview Tuesday on CBS' "The Early Show," Douglas Schools Superintendent Nancy Lane said Martin had been promoted, at her own request, to custodian in late March, a job that came with more benefits and higher pay.

"We granted her a leave to go to participate in 'Survivor.' And did everything possible to support her," Lane said. "And when she returned, she of course returned to the position that she left. Which is the custodial position."

"That's perfectly accurate, yes," Martin said in response.

somegirl Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 09:50 AM EST

You people are a bunch of tools. How many times in your life have you lied?..and how much money do corporate people make worldwide who suck you into getting all riled up about fake reality shows like survivor. If your lives run on what some character in a show like this does wrong or right, you must live a shallow existence.

JinB Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

re: Cali_Dude: If you're so cool and smart and you never watch these shows than why are you here commenting on it? If you don't care and you have so many better things to do then why don't you take your smug, I'm smarter than you attitude and go pat yourself on the back somewhere where the rest of us don't have to hear about it.

Cali_Dude Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 02:55 AM EST

All of you are just sooooo mesmerized by the whole thing. Just remember---Its a TV SHOW!!!! That's all. In simple terms----The higher the audience rating, the higher the dollar amount they can charge large corporations like GM, Ford and P&G to advertise commercials so that you and I can go out and buy the crap they are slinging to us. Remember----Whether she lied or not is irrelevant. Everyone Lies. She played the "game"---the Hollywood Game and she got money out of the whole deal. I give her credit for that. But as for me---I never ever watch these "reality" shows. I have too much to do in life----and I'd rather enjoy my life than sit in front of an extremely stupid show, which is just a "vehicle" to provide advertising commercials directly to millions of people like you. Wake up and realize that none of these reality shows are real. They are all "spinned" into things to create ratings...which equals huge advertising revenue.

me Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 12:05 AM EST

Denise is the one lying. I know people within the school system, and she was promoted to a much higher paying job but didn't like the hours. She was upset because she couldn't get her old job back because they filled it. She took the janitor position. I felt sympathy for her as well, until I realized it was all lies. The school is 100% telling the truth on this one. She had taken the different position before she left for china.

marct Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:45 PM EST

Denise should run for public office! Being caught in a big lie, and being able to dance around it. Taking the 50k, being explicitly asked by the media if she's gonna keep it, and dances some more (and never answering the question). She's a born politician!!

She Not Taking the $50,000 Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 10:49 PM EST

I just saw on a blog that Denise has come out with a new statement via CBS apologizing profusely, asking to be forgiven, and saying that she no longer feels comfortable taking the $50,000 and has asked Burnett to donate it to a pediatric AIDS foundation instead. Don't know if this is a real press release or not but it would restore my respect for Denise if true.

laDiva Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 10:48 PM EST

You people who are defending Femullet need to go watch the video of her AND her boss on the Early Show, in which Denise ADMITS that everything Lane says is TRUE. She also lied when she said she makes $7 an hour (it's actually $17 and hour). She apologizes for her misleading statements yet avoids the question(asked to her TWICE) if she'll be giving the 50K back.

Charlotte Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 09:52 PM EST

You can take the trash out of the trailer--and even send her to China!--but you can't the trailer out of the trash! Mark Burnett should sue to get his $50,000 back and donate the money to charity in her honor. THAT would be rich!!

Jerry Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 09:43 PM EST

She was dumb as a rock in China... but she apparently played Mark Burnett for 50 grand. Maybe she'll buy herself a haircut and a conscience...

ilz Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 09:34 PM EST

Duuuuuuhmb
Bet she doesn't have the nerve to go back to her job. The district on the other hand HAS to give the job back to her. People can be so ungrateful and always play the victim in life so some one will give them a handout. So again it worked! She only is 40 now. Wonder if it will work when she is 60 and has burned all her bridges

Michelle Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

the producers of survivor should either make her give the money back or (for those who think she deservered the money for being a good player) give the third place winner some money too because denise obviously doesnt deserve it.

Loachdriver Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

Yes, mullet haired hog sounds better than mullet haired lying hog. She proved she was stupid when she didn't align with Peih-Gee & Eric. Go away, loser. If you saw her on the Early Show with Julie Chen you now know she admitted she lied & the Supervisor's story is the truth.

Eliza Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 08:40 PM EST

SHAME SHAME SHAME! As said above, when you preach to others about lying and being false and then you mislead/lie openly it shows the truth. Actions speak much louder than words!

A Friend Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 08:40 PM EST

Yes, Denise made a mistake. But I am wholeheartedly angered that she misled a country's perception of a fabulous small town's school district.

Jane Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

Seems like CBS lied when they said she was a lunch lady rather than a janitor, which is what she apparently was just prior to the start of the Survivor game. Of course, "mullet-haired lunch lady" is waaaaayyyyyyy better than "mullet-haired janitor."

JinB Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

By choosing which facts to relate and which to keep to herself and by spinning her story the way she did Denise lied, pure and simple. She has probably spent her entire life trying to get what she wants by begging for sympathy and guilt tripping others and when that doesn't work she gets mad and blames them for her own bad decisions. It wasn't enough that she twisted her story to try and get everyone to feel sorry for her, but she didn't seem to care or comprehend that she was sliming other, innocent people in the process. Courtney was right Denise does suck at life.

Carolyn Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 07:31 PM EST

She makes $17 an hour plus benefits in the custodian position, which she asked for and took in MARCH, compared to $7 an hour with NO benefits job as the lunch lady. What a creep. And what a hypocrit -- boy she lit into Amanda and Todd at the final TC for lying, acting so holier-than-thou, and they did it in the game, not screwing their employers and Survivor's generosity in real life. CREEP

Archangel Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 07:28 PM EST

I'll I'm sayin is that anyone who knows what it's like being a custodian knows it's a rough time. I don't give a crap what some superintendent says, because her income is probably decidedly more. Try living the life as a custodian within a an annoying and fake-nice public school system first, and then try to criticize the lady.

Elle Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

WAKE UP PEOPLE. She lied...She stated it on CBS The Early Morning show. Remember she said they could not put her back in her job because of her popularity from the show. GEEZ some of you folks are so damn gullible.

Mitzi Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 06:38 PM EST

I'm not saying she didn't mislead. I'm not saying what she did was honorable. I'm not really defending Denise. I'm just saying that if you listen really closely, it appears that she's not outright lying, though she IS being deceptive by not telling the whole truth ("they didn't give me my old job back" appears to be the truth. She decided she'd rather be a lunch lady than a janitor, apparently talked to someone about that, and was told she couldn't have it. WHEN those 100+ 3rd graders all said "Hi Denise" is unclear since if she's working the night shift, she wouldn't see them. But we don't have enough info on that to judge.) My thoughts are that Denise is obviously not terribly sophisticated and savvy, probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer. And she definitely plays the "pity me" thing way too much. But I'm sure she had no idea that she'd be offered $50K, and probably just thought that this would be a good way to get a good job offer. Unfortunately, it all backfired on her.

Mirillie Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

How often is a superintendant knowledgable about hiring decisions for lunch ladies and janitors? If Denise lied, I am disappointed, but if the superintendent is maligning her, Denise should sue.

Billy Bob Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 05:08 PM EST

Hey Mitzi,
Remember that famous line from the movie the rainmaker, when the lady just didn't get the message: "you are stupid, stupid, stupid" That said here is a link to get you a dictionary so you can understand what LIE means: http://www.amazon.com/Merriam-Webster-Dictionary/dp/087779930X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198015544&sr=8-1

CJ Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

Denise has admitted to several news outlets that the school boards version of events is in fact correct. She admits that she changed her mind about wanting the promotion while taping survivor, and she apologizes if her comments were misleading to the audience...so in other words, she herself admits she lied.

t3hdow Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

What's ironic about this is that if Mark Burnett never gave away the 50 grand, this wouldn't get a lick of attention from the media. Even if Denise used the sympathy card so she can get free stuff, I wouldn't doubt that she's surprised over the Pandora's Box she opened (once she didn't deny her school's statement, anyway). Well, I hope she uses that money wisely, because after this stunt, I doubt anyone gives a hoot about her problems anymore. Such a shame, indeed.
P.S. Does anyone know if Mark Burnett planned to give Denise the 50K she won on the show or add to that and gain 100K instead? The latter makes more sense, but it would be even more ironic if it's the former (i.e. inadvertently ruining your reputation for money the producers planned to give you anyway).

TVSlave Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

To Bill who said:Bill Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST
Why is the superintendent of the Douglas Public Schools more believable than Denise?? Superintendent and other people in high position also lie a lot to cover their butts.
You dope, the school is a state governed entity....if they lie they can be sued within an inch of their lives...all personel actions HAVE to be documented - ever heard of the EEOC??
USE YOUR HEADS PEOPLE...she lied and was too simple to know she would be caught out.

Ally Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

To those who Taped and claim she did not LIE, uh, yeah she did. Instead of telling the audience that her old job was filled after she rec'd a PROMOTION, she inferred it was taken away because she would have been a distraction. She just wanted more money to build a big karate studio. She doesn't want to work anymore. That is obvious from her whining on the show in the last eps, and from the reunion show. Those of you feeling sorry for her - Learn to read and decipher ALL info and facts properly before you defend someone

dinise waters Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

What denise did was terrible. When those words left her mouth she knew she was lying, and then to receive 50 grand for the lie is a terrible lesson to send to her children and to others watching the show. Mark Burnett was scammed out of 50 grand-And the lunch lady should be ashamed of herself. A lie is a lie is a lie.......

Do we actually need to post a definition of lie here? She didn't tell the truth, she formulated the story to make herself appear the victim of a cold cruel system, SHE LIED! Think about this, how many of you have the luxury of going into your boss's office and saying "hey boss, I wanna take the next 3 months off to go play a reality show game in China. Hold my job for me, will ya?"
I just wish there was some way that they could rescind that consolation prize she sniveled her way into.

dee Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

BEING A LUNCH LADY IS A PART TIME NO BENEFITS POSITION. CUSTODIAN HOWEVER IS BIG BUCKS. DENISE IS A BIG FAT LIAR. CANT BELIEVE I WAS ROOTING FOR HER. I NEVER WAS A GOOD JUDGE OF CHARACTER. SHE LOOKED LIKE A LOWLIFE BUT I GAVE HER THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT.WHTA A SHYSTER THAT WOMAN IS. HOPE MARK BURNETT GIVES AMANDA THE CHECK FOR 50K. I HATE LOWLIFE LIARS

To Mitzi Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Nope she lied. I think that this will have a profound negative effect on the rest of her life. And her kids.

To Jay Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

You are a moron. Denise did not deny anything the school said. She said it was true. She is a liar. Why didn't she lie when she was palying the game. She might have won. Instead she lied to you and you don't want to believe it.

Mitzi Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

If you listen to the clip from the Reunion Show, Denise doesn't actually lie. Yes, she was definitely misleading since it sounds like she came back from Survivor and her previous job was taken from her & now she's doing one she doesn't want. But she didn't actually say that. Everything she said was true, it was just perceived incorrectly. I don't believe that Denise purposely misled people, but her overall attitude in life seems to be "woe is me" and that attitude was displayed in a way that came across very sympathetically. I don't however, think she needs to give the $50K back. The joke's on Mark Burnett for giving "chump change" (relative to the budget of the show) for ratings. That's why he did it--no question there! His decision. His gift. Period. But now Denise should take that money and do good with it. If she's opening a karate school, maybe she can put it towards a scholarship fund for kids who can't afford to attend otherwise. Giving it back to Burnett would be pointless.

GP Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

If she's no longer a lunch lady then the excuse for the mullet was also a lie!

Billy Bob Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

THE B###CH FLAT OUT LIED.
The "I cannot tell a lie" lady told a whopper and cheated the producer out of $50,000. The Survivor game, where lying is au rigor ends when the Winner is announced. Denise is liable for lying for personal gain and a defamation lawsuit by the School board.

get real people Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

Why should the school have to post the confidential personnel files for you fools to believe it? Denise has admitted she gave false info. She schoolis NOT the bad guy here. Denise lied to try to benefit from her situation

You know that..... Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Denise was trying to milk her "poor me" for all she could get. Hoping people would send her stuff, give her free stuff. Maybe Rosie would give her a house like the Kentucky folks from AR. Maybe give her kids a college fund.

Rob Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

Playing "the victim" has served her well again. "Sucking at life" has its benefits.

jay Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

This is an easy controversy to resolve. The superintendant says that Denise requested the position and received it, along with a pay increase, before the show started. There must be paperwork that memorializes the personel action. Produce it.

Phil Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

uh, hello, the school is going to have documentation to back up what they are saying (a job application from Denise before she left, paperwork for her leave, etc.). You don't switch jobs without any paperwork so I'm sorry, Denise fans, but at the very least she was extremely disengenuous.

Kellan Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

Ummm...we believe the school because Denise has now ADMITTED the school is telling the truth. Which means, she admist she's a liar.

Bill Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

Why is the superintendent of the Douglas Public Schools more believable than Denise?? Superintendent and other people in high position also lie a lot to cover their butts.

Molly Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

I don't know how this hasn't come out, but people keep saying Denise should've tried for the F3 by switching to P.G. and Erik and voting off Todd. This would've been a huge risk to her, because the vote would've been 3-3; Amanda/Todd/Courtney voting for Erik, and P.G./Erik/Denise voting for Todd, correct? So they (probably) would've had some sort of tie-breaker like building fire, and what if Erik lost??? Then Denise would've been doubly screwed! She would have been exposed as a traitor to her original alliance, which might get her voted off next (finishing 5th) or at the very least cost her jury votes if she managed to win immunity twice and get to F3. So she really wouldn't be any better off than before! Better to try to maintain integrity of alliance and hope to win immunity. Of course, now with this janitor thing the integrity seems to be out of the window... LOL!

poorPG Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

does anyone else feel bad for PG? she sat there and watched denise cash in on her whining and she fought hard and played a good game and walked away with nothing. (Well, not nothing, but not 50k).

to Jay Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

And how about if it is the truth. You are not allowed to tell the truth without morons like you thinking conspiracy theory. Well Denise admitted the school board told the truth. When they fill a job that you have resigned from do you expect them to fire the new hire. Idiot!

OJ SIMPSON Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

CAN THIS BROAD JUST SHUT UP AND MAKE ME A GRILLED CHEESE? - I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR MONTHS AND I'M LATE FOR MATH

janitors/custodians Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

What is up with all of you putting down janitors/custodians? Like it's a "sucky" job? I know people who work good jobs in offices and they have a business cleaning job (aka janitor) on the side and they make big bucks dumping trash cans, vacuuming, and yea, cleaning toilets. It's not like Denise is using a toothbrush. It's like having a housekeeper. Get off your pedastal and clean your bathroom!!!

Linda Mosier Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Mark Burrnett was merely trying to help her AND appease his audience by rewarding her for "good viewing results". I agree with the previous statement "Joe the Janitor" writes. Hopefully she WILL get an education and a new look. Obviously she needs both desperately.

JAY Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

I worked for the school system and at all times they cover themselves. I believe she tried the job, did not care for it regardless of the increase in salary and was not allowed to go back. Happens all the time in the system.
I am sure they told her when she came back she would have to stay there. Maybe she said this incorrectly but bottom line, the school was not going to bend. She probably was not out of the position for 5 minutes and it was filled. Congrats to her and the show for giving the money.

boohoo Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:57 AM EST

She lied. But worse than that, she complained that the job kept her away from her family. How about your stint on Survivor manly man?

Torp Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:50 AM EST

According to CBS;

Denise confirms that the school district was completely accurate in their press release and that she had been working as a custodian (a position she applied for) prior to her appearance on Survivor.

When Denise returned from Survivor she wanted her old job (as a lunch lady) back but was not granted the position because it had been filled by another person.

Denise claims that she did not mean to make the school district or her community look bad and insists that it was just a misunderstanding.

I wonder what alliances she will now have to build!

The Torp Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

Let's see, when she left she was a lunch lady and terurns a janitor! She also indicated that she received her regulat pay even though she was at a rehersal that was blessed by her supervisor.

Otherwise, she would never have made the audtion who her "supervisor" was the one who urged her to go in the 1st place.

So, do you think this person does speak forthright? We were amazed that this was said, nevermind printed. Do you think it wasn't noticed by officials? The superintendent comments along with the school board's chairmans are both adept at deception.

If I were her, I'd watch her back when she returns, especially with these two.

Liar Liare pants on fire! Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

Denise lied. Go watch the interview on the CBS Early Show.

PhoebeGonsalves Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

sorry, I am with Denise. There was too pat an statement made too quickly in response to Denise's comments. I am very knowledgeable when it comes to Mass school depts and they are all about cya.

jmo Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:04 AM EST

Geez. At the time she applied, she was probably a Lunch Lady. She applied for a promotion to Custodian and got it. Full time with benefits & raise. She got a leave of absence to go play Survivor and the school supported her. She came back and the job was waiting for her. She played the poor me card through the whole show. "I have nothing to go back to". If you replay the show, she says they didn't hold the job for her (which is a lie), she was now working as a custodian at nite (true), she hasn't been able to see her family much(true), hasn't gone to hockey games (true). But that was her choice in taking the job. She probably hoped her "celebrity" would get her day shift or whatever. Maybe her sob story would have people sending money or something. Looks at Amazing Race, that Kentucky couple that Rosie had a house built for them etc. She was going for the public sympathy vote and wanted charity.

to jptigercat Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

I agree with everything youu said, however you really can't speak for all school boards. That said, Denise is a liar. Maybe if she would have been deceptive during the game she would have gone further.

catrice Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

Now they should fire her dykish wide ass. The school system didn't need the bad publicity nor the time they will spend clearing their reputation. They did not sign up for that when they generously gave her the time off. By the way, what income was her poor family surviving on when she was gone?

JPtigercat Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

I have a little insight into the question, as I'm a teacher and was a (minor) (local) celebrity for winning $125,000 on "Millionaire".

First, custodian is a huge step up from lunch lady. It's full-time and you get benefits.

Secondly, it's so easy for the school to prove what it said is true. It has payroll records and can show exactly when Denise started being paid as a custodian.

Third, the story about losing her lunch job because she was too big a distraction is pure hooey. I grant you that a half-hour of "Millionaire" (when it was the number one, two, and three show in the ratings every week) doesn't match many weeks on "Survivor" for celebrity. Still, I guarantee that the kids at school would have oohed and aahed for a little bit and then taken it for granted.

Denise's pitiful story is a load.

And then there's the fact that she admitted it...

Morons Unite Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 10:48 AM EST

Apparently the audience for this show is mainly morons. Fact: Denise CHOSE the custodian job. Fact:They gave her time off for Survivor(how many of your jobs would do that?) Fact:She is a liar

My father is a superintedent and he is the one who does ALL the firing and hiring for the school system.
