Categories: Movie Biz

Milk_l Emile Hirsch and Josh Brolin (pictured) are aligning themselves with yet another prestige project. The two, who are currently earning Oscar buzz for their roles in Into the Wild and No Country for Old Men, respectively, are in negotiations for Milk, the Gus Van Sant biopic starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the former San Francisco city supervisor and gay-rights activist. Brolin is in talks to play Dan White, the elected official who assassinated Milk in 1978, while Hirsch is eyeing the role of street hustler-turned-Milk aide, Cleve Jones. James Franco (In the Valley of Elah), meanwhile, is gearing up to play Milk's longtime lover, Scott Smith. Milk, which is scheduled to begin shooting Jan. 21 in San Francisco, is being made by Groundswell Productions and will be released by Focus Features.

Hopefully van Sant has the nerve to do this right. Competing projects have floated for years, and finally Showtime produced a dreadfully mediocre version of this story on TV. The slayings of these two San Fran. politicians deserves a much more dramatic treatment that will reach a widestream audience. It's also very important that it is not a "gay" movie-- ALL people need to know why these assassinations were a turning point in recent American history. Watch the 1984 documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk." The outrage of long-oppressed gay citizens, when assassin Dan White was slapped on the wrist, is a major part of this story that needs to be understood by straight Americans.

Hope they don't shy away from the homosexual aspect of these characters. So many of these movies never even show men kissing.

I agree with Cliff. What makes this a "gay biopic"? Is this biopic attracted to other biopics?

ZZ Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

What do you think would happen if you called the Bro-line?

Lori Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

Hey, EW - you should spell Brolin's name right in the headline!

joey hegele Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 11:16 AM EST

i just hope the competing harvey milk biopic never gets made, or at least waits 10 years. we do not need another biopic showdown like with truman capote.

News around this movie keeps getting better and better.

And if you haven't seen Emile in The Mudge Boy... rent it now. Amazing performance.

This headline "Gay Biopic" creates novelty and gimmickry around what is a fascinating and tragic story, and likely a great movie. Can't we say "Harvey Milk biopic" or "New Gus Van Sant movie"? I hate to be too politically correct, but this is the magazine that wondered, a few weeks ago, why Brokeback Mountain hasn't had a greater influence on cinema. It's because our focus is too narrow. This movie isn't a drama to you, it's a "gay movie." We can't compare it to Dead Man Walking or Million Dollar Baby, just the Birdcage or In and Out. Can't we do better?

Well, it's about time! Sounds like a good cast.
