Making sense of the AFI top 10

This year's just-released Top 10 list from the American Film InstituteBefore the Devil Knows You're Dead, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Into the Wild, Juno, Knocked Up, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, Ratatouille, The Savages, and There Will Be Blood — was its typical mix of established Oscar contenders and a few curve balls. What was missing? The biggest snubs were American Gangster and Charlie Wilson's War, though Universal Studios was represented with the welcome inclusion of Knocked Up. Sweeney Todd didn't make the cut, either. Also missing was Atonement, since, being a British production, it wasn't eligible for the AFI list. (Diving Bell, meanwhile, is considered a U.S./France coproduction.) Films like No Country, Michael Clayton, and Juno certainly cemented their movies-to-watch status, landing yet another honor after making the Golden Globe, Broadcast Critics, and National Board of Review shortlists. But don't count out any movie that the AFI didn't recognize — last year their top 10 list left out The Departed.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead showcased Philip Seymour Hoffman at his smarmiest, Ethan Hawke at his naivest and Marisa Tomei at her chestiest. In other words, another scenery-chewing variation on their usual characters. The only perf of any value was Albert Finney, who was commanding in little screen time. Not commanding enough to make this Top 10 though.

Of the 3 I've seen (No Country, Knocked Up, and Ratatouille), they were all really good movies. Not sure if the last 2 are Top 10 caliber, but nice to see them recognized. And I really want to see Juno and There Will Be Blood.

I can't believe Sweeney didn't make the cut, although the list still is very solid.

Just saw "There will be Blood" aka "Bill the Butcher Drills For Oil." Sorry but over rated and I thought the same of "No Country for Old Men". Found "Eastern Promises" and "Juno" way better in every way.

Of that list, I've seen Ratatouille, Juno, and Knocked Up (I live 30 min from the nearest indie theater). I'm especially glad that Ratatouille was recognized, because it's the best movie no one's talking about. All three were amazing, and I would nominate the first two for best picture (Knocked Up had a couple of glaring holes to keep it from achieving more than second tier status, mostly revolving around the Rogen-Heigl thing. not terribly believable, but still funny)

I really want to see Blood and No Country,

Nothing moved me more than "Once" and the music alone is Oscar worthy. Mix in a heart-warming, surprise ending and you've got a film that deserves multiple nominations. I will boycott the Oscars if "Once" doesn't get its due.
