CBS' Swingtown: We Hardly Knew Ye

Dec 14, 2007, 04:50 PM | by Lynette Rice

It was quite possibly the most provocative drama series set to debut during the 2007-08 season. Too bad we still don't know when it will see the light of day. CBS had originally planned a midseason launch for Swingtown, the racy drama, from Mike Kelley (Jericho), set in the '70s about swinging married couples in a Chicago suburb. But the strike disrupted production before the cast and crew could shoot and edit more than two additional episodes beyond the pilot. CBS won't debut a show with only three episodes, so Swingtown is on hold -- for now. It's hard for network insiders to predict when the show could debut, given the ongoing labor dispute, but executive producer Carol Barbee told EW that it'll be worth the wait.

"It is pretty titillating. It's about sex and swinging!" she says of the show, which stars Melrose Place's Grant Show. "But it's a family drama at its core. It has a Wonder Years quality. We're seeing the events that went on in the country through the eyes of the kids. There's a total teen drama underneath it all. It's not like HBO, in which there will be in-your-face sex. It's more about the emotional landscaper and what people are searching for."

Barbee says the Swingtown writing team was able to complete six scripts in varying stages before the strike hit, so the show could conceivably resume production quickly if the strike is resolved sooner rather than later. The total network order for the show is 13 episodes and boasts a musical score by Liz Phair, a longtime buddy of the creator. "Liz came up with the main title sequence," says Barbee. "We want to throw out this feeling that a party is going on, come to the party! There's a huge amount of optimism and warmth as these characters try to feel their way through situations, try to find excitement in their lives. In my heart, I know Swingtown is a really good show."

We believe that Swingtown is the MOST entertaining series to hit any network in many many years. We don’t stay up that late usually, so we record the show to watch at a more convenient time. Of course, when we watch the recorded episodes of most TV shows, we fast forward during the commercials. Not so with Swingtown. We feel so strongly about this show that we watch the ALL the commercials and make note of who they are. We are sending business their way and taking the time to send them letters stating our appreciation of their sponsorship.
To the nay-sayers – we say that this show is no more “shocking” and “immoral” than any of the soap opera’s that have been running on DAYTIME TV for generations (and Swingtown does it without any of the violence you see (or even implied) on the soap opera’s (and other TV). Swingtown deals candidly with developing relationships and receives negative press from the right – wingers. These same “morals police” are mum about all the violence on TV.

Laughing my ass off at the "my kids are watching this" and the "filth" comments. Please! Seriously, if you are watching TV with your young children at 10 PM at night, then that is more about you than this wonderful show.

Finally a prime time non cable show that has interesting humans and is NOT a "Reality" show.

Does anyone condemning this program watch "Sopranos" or "Weeds" or any of the violent shows on T.V?

This is not Porn. Please, go and pick up some "real" porn and then compare.

I do not WANT a few Bible Thumpers telling we what in acceptable to watch. If you don't like this affecting your children, don't let them watch!

My child is four, and I don't let her watch T.V. at 10 PM at night and if she did somehow see this show, I would explain how it was an adult show and not for children. Is it really that hard?

If you need to censor what others watch, you really need to get something else going on with your life.

PUT SWINGTOWN BACK IN PRODUCTION QUICKLY!!! Greatest show to come along since "Dallas" in 1979! Us baby boomers are sick to death of all this reality mumbo jumbo ~~ Swingtown is fresh and keeps me wanting more and more with each episode. And NO, it's no more immoral than any of the other offerings and not as bad as most reality shows! The networks should realize - the baby boomers are sick of reality TV and Swingtown is where it's AT !!! Please writers and producers - let's GET IT ON !!!!!!

I think Swingtown is a great show! It deals with the issues of the '70s, and depicts the realities of changing relationships. All you "child worshipers" out there need to get a clue. Perhaps it bothers you that your kids might know more about these things than you do?? Or do you expect them to go through life wearing blinders? Come on, cut the cord already! Swingtown rules!

I can't wait for Thursday nights. Me and my friend make sure we call each other to remind us that it is on! We love it!!!

I LOVE this show and think it's the best thing CBS has done for quite some time. All you who consider this to be racy or pornographic need to, respectfully, 1) watch the show, and 2) take off your prude caps. And good point by previous poster: Why ARE your children up at 10 pm watching tv?

Suz Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 03:00 AM EST

GET REAL people! This is NOT a "porno" show. Before you judge, watch it and see how people are (were)in America and how the sexual revolution, viet nam and politics, music and womens lib evolved us all. By the way, what are your kids doing up at 10PM at night anyway?? That is when the show airs...after prime time.

This show is horrible. I feel the same as other posters. I have to change the channel when the promos come on if my children are in the room. I never get upset about TV, but this time I was disgusted. I even called CBS to complain...the number is -212-975-3247. Honestly though we need to complain to their sponsors and unfortunately I would have to watch the show to find that out...ugh...

I dont agree with this TV show. this is on when my kids are still up and its on regular TV. I will be boycotting CBS. apparently they think they can get away with anything. and as for the people that enjoy the show... why dont you just go buy a porno and keep these shows away from our children?

Christy Bynum Fri, Jun 6, 2008 at 03:00 PM EST

Yea, I would be completely embarrassed to watch this with a child, but I was really embarrassed when I saw the commercials and my husband was the only one in the room! The show just has WAY too much information for me and I'm pretty sure I would NEVER compare it to the Wonder Years. My goodness...

I am going to boycott CBS over the stupid decision to put a series like "Swingtown" on television. Yes, I can turn the channel if I am not interested in a show. But I am boycotting CBS over this one, because there are millions of kids and teens with televisions in their rooms, who will see this. And we all know that television/music have a heavy influence on the culture and society at large. To take such an alternative lifestyle like swinging, and bringing it to prime time television that kids and teens have access too is irresponsible. And yes, every kid I know is still watching television at 10:00 p.m.

Patti Tue, May 27, 2008 at 03:51 PM EST

"Swingtown" is NOT a show that I am even considering watching. The plot doesn't even interest me. If I want to see this, I'll watch a premium channel, rent a movie, or watch some crappy *reality* show on MTV. I do not understand why they cancelled "Shark", either. I've never watched "Moonlight". (After the demise of "Angel", I swore off vampires!), however, I do know lots of people that do and that really like it. CBS is about to see their popularity do a MAJOR nose-dive!!

It's not very often that I am embarrassed or horrified while watching TV with my 14 year old son. However, during a recent CSI episode, a commercial for Swingtown came on and I was at a loss for words. Who the hell would think of putting something like this on TV? Save it for Showtime or some other racey channel that gets ratings from that sort of thing. I'm in no way a prude, but I feel that this sort of programming is irresponsible. I'm all for a boycott.

Anything that's related to Liz Phair is good enough for me...

Brittany Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 12:47 AM EST

Just what the world needs, more filth streaming out of people's televisions. I hope it never airs. Ha, HA--big laugh, that "Wonder Years" comparison...that show was wholesome. This one sounds anything but! By their own description of it! Puke.
