One good thing about this year’s crazy awards season? At least it’s not predictable. After being almost completely ignored by the Golden Globes last week, Into the Wild received the most Screen Actors Guild Award nominations this morning, picking up citations for best cast, actor (Emile Hirsch), supporting actor (Hal Holbrook), and supporting actress (Catherine Keener). No Country for Old Men and Michael Clayton followed with three nominations each, while American Gangster managed two. But the lists were even more notable for who wasn’t on them: Sweeney Todd’s Johnny Depp and Gangster’s Denzel Washington (pictured) were overlooked, as was Charlie Wilson’s War scene-stealer Philip Seymour Hoffman. For Depp and Hoffman, it may be because SAG voters weren’t sent DVDs of their films, but it may not bode well for Washington’s Oscar chances. Meanwhile, two strong Best Picture contenders, Atonement and Juno, were left out of the Best Cast category (Juno’s Ellen Page did score a best-actress nod, while Atonement was omitted entirely). But before you now consider best-cast nominees Hairspray and 3:10 to Yuma (both great films) serious Oscar contenders, remember one thing: Last year, the SAG Awards nominated Bobby.

Good call about “Bobby”
Actors loves them some actors.
And they’re all Sean Penn lovers so its no wonder “Wild” scored big today.
“Atonement” is a British film… oh wait, that’s AFI’s excuse.
no, Amy Adams, i know the movie is not this artsy thing, but she made my year. Never have i loved a performance more than her take on Giselle on Enchanted. For me, that is the best performance of the Year.
I recentely saw Juno with some friends, and while I liked it a lot, especially Jennifer Garners heart-tugging performance, I found Ellen Page to give the same snarky teen performance that was the standard in Gossip Girl, and the CW, perhaps older members of the Academy are not used to seeing smart-mouthed snarky worded teens, I just don’t find her performance as ground-breaking as my elders are.
As a SAG actor, I’m annoyed with the nominating comittee for overlooking Depp. It’s an inspired performance and he did not deserve to be left out. Though there are some other fine performances in that catagory, I’ve a mind not to vote for best male actor, since the best one was left out.

Someone really needs to explain these things to me. How is it that Steve Carell is the only member of The Office to get a nomination (besides the ensemble catagory)? It can’t be because the rest of the cast is supporting ’cause that doesn’t make sense. Where, oh where, is Jenna Fischer?

Pushing Daisies was snubbed! It should’ve gotten one for ensemble since all the actors are brilliant on the show.
An obsession of mine is trying to predict oscar nominees ( and I am usually right)Johnny Depp will most defintely be nominated for Best Actor, as will James McAvoy . In fact, I predict Atonement will lead the nominees with best picture, director, actor,supporting actress, screenplay, score, art direction, editing and costume.
I am not a big fan of American Gangster and I definitely don’t think Ruby Dee should have been nominated. She was hardly in the movie at all even for a supporting part. She was only nominated because she is an older, well-respected actress and for that one very small scene which she slapped Denzel. I would have rather have Leslie Mann, Jennifer Jason Leigh or Kelly MacDonald nominated.

Shame about Atonement, I thought it was the best film of the year with fantastic performances all around (particularly McAvoy and Ronan)…I still think it will be okay come Oscar time
I saw Atonement and really liked the film. The middle version of Briony was excellent. It better get nominated for score, because the whole typerwriter effect was fantastic. I’m just happy it’s a good year for movies (except the summer blockbuster types… those were all predictable)
Atonement will be this years Dreamgirls.
hairspray, YES REALLY!!! remember it’s nomination is for ensemble, and as a group, the cast rocked!! john and nikki, zac and elijah, all of them, michelle pfeiffer (sp?) was an awesome villain. so, yes, really.
Im really surprise about the snub for Jodie Foster,she gave the most sincere female performace of the year in The Brave One,the problem here is because the movie was a floop,but she was memorable,much more better than Keira knighty,Amy Adams or Angelina Jolie.
Jodie Foster don´t have to appear ugly or put a lot of makeup and contact lenses like Andelina Jolie did do make a great performace!
Another popularity contest . . . oops, awards show. Hopefully, the WGA strike will keep this a private affair and off-air, and anyone who cares will get to read the results the next morning along with the other non-news of the day.
I prefer The Golden Globes nominations. The SAG nominations are safe ones, nothing new. It’s like a copy/paste of the past years. Espacially regarding the television nominations.
Aaaand once again, no love for Friday Night Lights. Never mind that Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton and the cast as a whole give STELLAR performances week after week. It’s rare to see such honest and nuanced onscreen acting.

I have high hopes for Nikki Blonsky for actress for Oscar. Not picture. I also think Hairspray will do well with Ladies Choice for song and costumes
Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose)was the BEST Female Performance–no other actress would or could do what she did in this role!! Johnny Depp–long overdue for many great performances–is THE BEST Male Performance of the year, and “Sweeny Todd” is a magnificent film!
