The 50 Smartest People in Hollywood

Nov 28, 2007, 04:00 PM | by Sean Smith

Categories: Movie Biz

Judd_l Power Lists are so over. Magazines, including EW, have done them for decades, but as way of digging deep into Hollywood's DNA, "power" has become sort of beside the point. "Power" just tells you who's in charge. It doesn't tell you who's shaking things up. So EW decided to go in search of the people who are rocking the industry's world this year, the people with ideas innovative, creative, dangerous, renegade ideas who are changing the way movies are made. We went looking for the 50 Smartest People in Hollywood.

Below are the results of three months of constant research, hundreds of hours of conversations with the brightest minds in the industry, and weeks of heated debate. We started with a list of more than 300 contenders, and it proved surprisingly hard to chop them down to a trim 50. We had to establish strict criteria to determine who would and who would not make the cut. Here were our rules:

1) Every person on the list had to be smart not just in general, but smart right now. They had to be leading the industry forward in some way, today.
2) The list would be about the movie business only. (We'll do a Smartest People in TV list, too, next year).
3) The list would represent a broad range of intelligence in the movie business not just the suits and the stars, but the composers and the costume designers, too.
4) "Smart" could mean many things. It encompasses books smarts and street smarts, financial genius and emotional intelligence. We weren't interested in IQ. What mattered was the originality of each person's thinking and the reach of their ideas beyond the borders of their own careers.
5) At 50 names, the list could not possibly include every smart person in Hollywood. Each person on this list needed to help paint a portrait of where movies are today and where they're headed. Each person on this list tells a different story about the movie business today. They are all smart, certainly, but they also symbolize, collectively, Hollywood now.
6) We ranked them first, and primarily, by their overall impact on the industry this year, and then factored in the influence of each person within their own profession. It allows for a diverse and surprising list, where a cinematographer (Emmanuel Lubezki) can take the #24 slot, while an Oscar winning director (Michael Moore) can come in below him at #27. It will also give you, we're sure, plenty to argue with us about.

We hope you're happy to see a few familiar faces rewarded on this list and are intrigued by the people you've never heard of. You'll find the complete package with #5 entry Will Smith on the cover on newsstands this week and, of course, here on EW.com, along with a quiz to test your Hollywood IQ. (Yes, you'll be graded, but we won't tell anyone your score.) Feel free to tell us how brilliant or idiotic our choices on the comments section below. And make sure to tell us who you'd nominate as one of the 50 Smartest People in Hollywood. We'll take it under advisement.

The list after the jump...

Some posters seem to have skipped reading criteria #4-5.

The list accurately reflects the lack of sufficient representation of women, people of color, gays/lesbians & the disabled in Hollywood. Progress creeps too slowly.

The list is of the "smartest" people in the Hollywood - not the best "actors" (and most of the people in the list aren't actors anyway). If it was, Meryl Streep would be first and Cate Blanchett #2.

Not that Ms. Jolie's acting credits are too shabby. She was an early favorite for Best Actress Oscar in her critically raved role in "A Mighty Heart." She won an Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted," 3 Golden Globes in a row (Girl, Interrupted, Gia, George Wallace), and 2 Screen Actors Guild awards (Girl, Interrupted, Gia). So in 2000, she swept the Oscar, Golden Globe & SAG Award. Oh, Ms. Jolie was nominated 2x for Emmys. In total, she has 21 wins & 38 nominations.

ligaya Fri, Apr 18, 2008 at 03:15 AM EST

Nancy, would you please give us a URL to a reliable source (tabloid press/blogs don't count) proving your assertion that Ms. Jolie is ignorant of genocide in Darfur?

I agree that many people who have been mentioned in the comments deserve to be on the list, but remember this is just for 2007, not for all time. The fact that Judd Apatow is #1 tells me part of the criteria for being on this list is being successful at making a lot of money with big box office hits in the immediate past.

ROBIN WILLIAMS

Why isn't Gary Busey on this list? Can anyone tell me why gary busey is not on this list, please. Did you guys not see Lethal Weapon 1? Apatow at #1? I'm with Busey? No? That show knocked down social barriers and made it safe for children to play in the streets at night again. Not number one or anything. Just like 7 is cool.
Thank you for you consideration in this matter.

6) We ranked them first, and primarily, by their overall impact on the industry this year...

Then shouldn't the list be called 50 Smartest People in Hollywood THIS YEAR? Otherwise this list makes no sense, and is really just a bunch of bullshit.
Sarah Polley adapted an Alice Munro book into a beautiful indie film, and she's close to last?
Ben Stiller made a movie about queefing and he's at number 20? How did that propell the industry forward this year? How much did he have to pay you for that?

citizen_cris Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 09:56 PM EST

wait, i just realized this is an entertainment weekly list...did we actually expect a good list? i'm surprised jessica alba isn't at number 3. the juice stain on my carpet just came up with a better list...the NATIONAL ENQUIRER just came up with a better list.

i think i need to make my own list.

cris Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

this is the most bogus list i've ever seen. how did jodie foster end up at #30 BEHIND ben stiller, who didn't even get through university. jodie foster is fluent in italian, french and numerous other languages. she has a doctorate, graduated magna cum laude was class valedictorian and has made incredible movies...and yet she's behind ben stiller and will ferrell.
this is just a list of "it" people at the moment...seriously, judd apatow at number one? it people.
why isn't natalie portman on there? she's incredibly intelligent.

KateConn Sat, Mar 1, 2008 at 10:14 PM EST

how did matt damon not make the list?!? i thought i skipped over his name when i read the list the first time, but with a genius screenplay and an incredible career, he deserves at least a top ten spot. EW definitely has some screws loose, for sure.

Munjuga Sat, Mar 1, 2008 at 07:00 AM EST

I was disappointed by this list.Too many smart people are missing here.i would have expected a person like Blanchett and Depp to be somewhere quite high. And where is Denzel,Morgan Freeman?

What about Natalie Portman???

too lazy to lie Tue, Feb 12, 2008 at 01:40 AM EST

well i'm agree with sarah polley's pick. She's a very innovative and creative actress/writer/director and known for her intelligence. She's smartest than angelina come on! cate blanchett too...i think michelle williams, julie christie and samantha morton deserves to be on it too...but whatever is just my opinion...

Nancy Wed, Jan 30, 2008 at 01:58 AM EST

Angelina is NOT smart - when she returned from Dafar they asked her if she saw any indication of genocide. She said she DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANT, but that she would check in to it. Give me a break - given her "status" as a goodwill ambassador, she should at least know the terminology used regarding the things she is supposed to be reporting on. I guess the chick who lives there while volunteering was right when she said Angie flew in by helicoptor, spent 15 minutes directing her "staged" photos, and then flew back to her ritzy hotel. Her movies are lousy too. She doesn't belong on this list!!!

Patsy Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

Are you kidding me that Diablo Cody
makes this list and not Maggie Smith
or Salma Hayak, Glenn Close or many others.I live in the Twin Cities and many are far more talented right here but probalbly not as ballsy.

farhana Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 09:51 PM EST

I totally agree qith the fact WILL SMITH is all the way in the top. To me he is the smartest person. But I would have been more happier if he was like the 2nd one or so.

Jason Bourne! Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 06:20 AM EST

Ben Affleck shouldn't be there....I am sure he will be the first to agree that his friend Matt Damon should be there...probably higher than rank 50 too...

Come on guys!

Mary Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 01:01 PM EST

How amazing and UNUSUAL to note that men are so much smarter than women.

John Morell Sun, Dec 23, 2007 at 11:15 PM EST

You might want to reconsider # 5 on the list of smartest people in Hollywood, Will Smith.

December, 2007-Will Smith has stunned the world by declaring that even Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was essentially a "good" person.

The Men In Black star, 39, is determined to see the best in people, and is convinced the former German leader did not fully understand the extent of the pain and suffering his actions would cause during his time in power in the 1930s and '40s.

He says, "Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'Let me do the most evil thing I can do today'.

"I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good'. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming."

Oh, yeah, Will, real smart. Sounds like Will Smith is unencumbered by the thought process. I'm pretty sure Osama bin Laden has his good points, too.

Alex Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

Lots of posts... hope I didn't miss the mention of Adam Sandler yet... I mean, are you kidding me??? Comedic genius paid well... why aren't you looking at the swan?!?!?!

Mk Thu, Dec 20, 2007 at 07:02 PM EST

you people who take this list literally are so stupid. this list isn't supposed to be taken seriously. who the hell voted anyway, and are they qualified enough to make such a list? they made this list just for the sake of making one. also people believing this list and going around telling their friends, "Ben stiller is smarter than Jodie Foster!" for example, is just what the writers want you to do.

will Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 10:36 AM EST

Has this astute Blue Ribbon panel
heard of George Lucas? If change in net worth over time is a measure of
personal brilliance, perhaps you can point out anyone on the list that has
accomplished more than him.About the only person you can mention in the same sentence with him is Spielberg.

Hans_Peters Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 02:03 AM EST

Diablo Cody is the new female Dennis Miller. Tries waaaay too hard.

WarOnTara Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 11:54 PM EST

There are some questionable choices (Ben Stiller? No Tim Burton? Hmm..) but nothing worth getting my panties all in a bunch. Calm down, everyone. It's just another arbitrary list.

PS Angelina Jolie IS smart. Sorry if you don't like her movies or (more likely the case) her love life (which...really, are we gonna get past that ever? Or at least stop being sexist and blaming the woman), but the woman is doing a lot as a humanitarian.

fj1200 Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 11:32 PM EST

Intelligent? puhleeezzzzz. Why would Hollywood even pursue this dopey PR campaign? Because the public rightly perceives this wacks as dumb. Hey, and why would Ben Stein not make the list? He is undoubtedly #1 compared to these dolts. Wonder IF politics played any small part in this propaganda?

Paul Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 09:39 AM EST

Yes, it seems many who have left comments didn't read the preamble to the list; it clearly defines the criteria. Also, the creator(s) of the list probably have a lot more "inside" information on these people than most us do. I think the list isn't that far off and, yes, of course there are going to be some smart people left off of it :)

adonissbiaeh Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 05:19 PM EST

Rese, you obviously have not read EW's cut-line rule. it's not just about being in good movies

D. McClure Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 11:56 PM EST

Your list was disappointing, but most lists are. You cannot narrow down the list of smart/brilliant/talented people in Hollywood to fifty.

Your list was surprising in that it listed people who had done a few things right (lately), and mixed them up with lifelong "smart" people. I won't even begin to list the people who should have been included, and weren't.

Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

How many producers grossed over a billion dollars last year? Lorenzo di Bonaventura should have made the main list

Michelle Devo Mon, Dec 10, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

jodie foster should be higher up. cate blanchett that far down!? are you kidding me?? angelina jolie should be far far down on that list. there are a lot of names missing, a lotof names that shouldnt be there, and many names that are missplaced. shame EW.

Alexis Sun, Dec 9, 2007 at 09:15 AM EST

I think Zac Efron should be on this list. I know most of his movies are televised, but HSM 3 is actually going to be in theaters and he did an awesome job in Hairspray. And it sounds like his upcoming movie 17 is going to be really good.

Angie Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

This reads like a list of who's popular right now. Beyond that, it doesn't make much sense. Maybe if some of the reasoning was listed for each person?

You can be a brilliant actor and dumb as a rock. Or a horrible actor, and super intelligent. The fact that they had a good or bad movie recently doesn't really say anything about their intelligence.

As for why there aren't more women on the list? Maybe they weren't true competitors. Cold hard truth. I'd rather see a dozen women that truly deserve it, than 30 women that were thrown in there to make the list look 'balanced'. And I'm saying this as a woman.

Last but not least, this is about movies this year - for all the people out there just devastated that their favorite TV or music star wasn't listed. Movies. Not TV or music. Got it?

Emily Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 08:06 AM EST

Wow - only 2 women in the top 25. Is this 2007's smart list - or 1957's?

Duh... Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 05:48 PM EST

Why is Jessica Simpson not on this list?

Kerry Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

Ah yes, I do need to say more... Mel Gibson - The Passion of Christ. Same magazine, page 50, the highest grossing independent movie of all time. And what about Braveheart? Kevin Costner - Dances with Wolves. Maybe you should do a top 50 of the biggest risk takers.

Kerry Fri, Dec 7, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

Harrison Ford. Need I say more?

SVC Thu, Dec 6, 2007 at 07:32 PM EST

Explain this logic: Ben Affleck on the list. Matt Damon not. Since we can safely assume their careers started at the same time, their trajectory's are easy to follow. One continues to exceed expectations while the other has severely faultered. I understand Affleck in on a comeback (dude, I'm rooting for ya) but isn't it safe to assume, given their careers as a whole, maybe Damon's a little smarter...and will continue to be?

Rev Tim Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:21 PM EST

How can you have such a list without Ben Stein being at or very near the top. He is celebrated for his raw intellect. Not smarter then Ben Affleck? You didn't see him getting involved with J-Lo did you?

myname Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

Michael Caine is # 1.
this list is nonsense

myname Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

this list is nonsense

Dens Powell Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

Some nitwit director on first place, just because he did some comedy? If there's one god of comedy, it's Larry David.
This list is rubbish. Really.

Becky Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

How in the name of all that is holy...and Jewish, could you have left Jon Stewart off your list?!?

Kotz Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

No surprise at number one. Anyone who owns the Freaks and Geeks DVD set already knows that Apatow should top the TV list as well. No one has close to Apatow's work on this cult show. If you don't own it...shame on you.

Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 06:01 AM EST

Judd Apatow is amazing and I've thought so since Freaks And Geeks. When he started Undeclared I knew the stars of that show were destined for greatness. A few years later Judd gets a greenlight on 40 Year Old Virgin and he helps out all of his friends/actors. Did you know Seth Rogan and all his "friends" in Knocked Up have been in Judd's work since his beginning in Freaks And Geeks...he even started the career of James Franco as well. He deserves his spot.

Sophie Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 01:38 AM EST

As soon as I finished looking through the list of the supposed 50 smartest people in Hollywood, I instantly thought, where the heck is TINA FEY!?!?!?!? She's only the creator, writer, producer and star of the funniest, smartest comedy on TV. Many would argue, myself included, that if '30 Rock' continues like it is for another season or so it will go down in history as even better than 'Seinfeld'. Shame on you EW for not including the smartest woman in TV!!!

Sam D. Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 12:28 AM EST

No. Just No.

john Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 12:17 AM EST

have they ever heard of quentin tarantino..how about charlie kaufman or the coen brothers. this list is bullshit.

Sssss Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 06:23 PM EST

One more time. Where's Robert Redford? Are you embarrassed yet?

Sssss Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 06:19 PM EST

Where is Robert Redford? Not on the list. Also, he's not on the list of the ones you didn't put on the list in the article "What About These Guys?" AND, he's not even in the comments posted thusfar. I can't believe this.

Jen Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

Angelina Jolie shouldn't be anywhere near this list(bad choices-ADULTERER!) and you missed the mark on not putting Tom Hanks, Martin Scorsese, or Matt Damon on this list, let alone Ron Howard, and so many more. Nice attempt though!

Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

Here's a less obvious choice that would've been interesting to see on this list: Sam Gores, head of Paradigm Agency. A few years ago he strung together a number of boutiques and built them into a powerhouse that now goes toe-to-toe with the "Big 5" agencies

Jeremy Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Haha....Judd at number 1! Wow if anyhting this guy is one of the biggest reasons that our country holds the infamous stat of being the dumbest country all together. I mean this guy made 40 year old virgin on top of other movies that all your kids are going to see on the weekends to become even dumber than they already were. Forget global warming, we need to get rid of this guy first becuase he's killing the youth of our nation faster than you can spell hybrid.

Bill Saltarelli Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

Guys, Ben Affleck as number 50?
How could you forget my childhood best friend Michael De Luca? Michael has a love for comic books and his genius has brought comic book icons to the screen like Blade & Ghost Rider. In addition to comics, he produced films such as Blow, Pleasantville, I Am Sam, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Honorable mention to another great talent, Jon Favreau.

Judy Holm Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

I cannot believe Mel Gibson was not mentioned, even on the cut list.! His "Passion of the Christ" and "Apoc alypto" were both big money makers and beautiful movies. Plus his previous body of work speaks eloquently for itself---remember "Braveheart"! There is some deep prejudice here---perhaps something to do with his being human. For shame-your list is biased, and therefore not worth reading.

Katie Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

I agree that Ashley Judd (Come Early Morning and Bug) and John Cusack (1408, Grace is Gone, Martian Child) were overlooked. Excellent years for both of them.

And "Heartbreak Kid" was not a rare miss for Stiller. He's had more misses than hits, and virtually no hits this year.

Dennis Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 10:37 AM EST

Who could ignore Ashley Judd?? She actually has credentials (Phi Beta Kappa), and the recent Iconoclasts shows she can match up with Madeleine Albright!

cece Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

What happened to Salma Hayek, Robert DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Matt Damon. This list is not very smart.

hippie Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 07:55 AM EST

I bet it was a stretch to come up with 50 people in Hollywood to label "smart"

Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 05:30 AM EST

what happened to m knight shamalayan?

dean southerland Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 04:09 AM EST

i would have voted for Cliff Kessler...actor, writer, and casting director....who worked for top talent in management

Char Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 12:55 AM EST

What about John Cusack? I do not understand how he is over looked time and time again. Not only has he been in the business for over 25 years, but he emerged from the 'Brat Pack Days' with dignity, without scandal and has worked consistantly. The movies that are produced thorugh his production company are among his best and additionally are written by him and his partners, who also happen to be high school friends. He already has starred in one great movie this year, 1408 and his Oscar buzz film will be released later this week.

Eric T Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 12:10 AM EST

A good list. However, in the "What About These Guys?" section, I think another name that could have been added would have been Kevin Smith. The writer/director/actor saw the power of the internet and Comic-Con long before most others and utilized it to promote his movies and himself. He has continued to flourish as his own brand and can get the Weinsteins to open their checkbooks as fast as anyone. He's bankable enough for hollywood while not over reaching and has influenced independant film making in ways that has allowed others to make their mark as well. Anyone who can convice the financiers that making a movie with your friends while still attracting other talented and name actors should be considered one of the smartest.

Melissa Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

I am surprised a true Hollywood brainiac (including IQ smarts and "many things"), Terrence Howard, is not on this list. First of all, he has a degree in Chemical Engineering (hello?). Secondly, he was nominated or won, for three Award winning films -- in one year; Crash, Lackawanna Blues, and Hustle and Flow. Do you wish you had left out the statement, "[f]eel free to tell us how brilliant or idiotic our choices [are] ..." for this list? I'm just sayin'.

Katie Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

How about Ed Norton?

Lesley Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Oh. My. God. I'm really saddened for the our country when you can't read and comprehend a list with very detailed criteria. This list is the smartest people in Hollywood, as in the MOVIE industry. Not the music or television industry. That is why Kanye or Tina Fey or Jon Stewart aren't on the list. For the love of all that is good and holy, READ! I swear all you did was read the headline and the list, and skipped the whole introduction.

ahna Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 10:49 AM EST

Where in the world did you get the idea that Ben Affleck and Michael Moore belonged in the top 50 "smartest"???? How stupid can ya get!

Chris (Karpoff) Sidney-Rickman Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 09:35 AM EST

How can you list all the bloody smart people w/o including music composers as Maurice Jarre, Ennio Morricone, Basil Pouledoris, Michael Kamen, John Williams and James Newton Howard?! Also, where are Ron Howard and M. Night Shaymalan?! And you mentioned a make-up person I've never heard of, w/o mentioning the brilliant Stan Winston or Michael Westmore! And you didn't even include an amazing array of wonderful and talented performers, all of whom are much smarter and more worth watching than--Judd Apatow?--really? I am speaking of the delightful Alan Rickman, Emma Thompsson, Colin Firth, Harrison Ford, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren and what about the young "Harry Potter" actors? You really missed the boat on this one! Most of the people, w/a few exceptions (like Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, David Heyman and Jodie Foster) can't hold a candle to these people!!

Karin Mon, Dec 3, 2007 at 06:16 AM EST

Ok, I guess there are very few women in Hollywood since about 80 % of your list consist of men. What the hell! You could at least acknowledge that the entertainment industry is unequal and that it is a problem. I love this magazine but the fact that you don’t raise this issue more often is disappointing. Why are men’s stories considered more important? That question should be on the cover.

Jacktion! Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

How is it possible that Kevin Federline isn't on this list? He's the #7 most influential male performer under 45, or whatever that list was. Surely marrying an attractive girl, divorcing her when she got to be too much, and taking all of her money is a smart thing to do. Malevolent, absolutely! But since when has Bruckheimer's "genius" benefited anyone but himself and maybe Ben Affleck?

Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

What about Peter Packanoonah? Why isn't he on the list?

Nik Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

Angelina Jolie? She's bloody gorgeous, yes, and a compassionate humanitarian, yes, but smart?! I can understand if she's in the 50 Most Generous People list but not this one. Cate Blanchett should be higher on that list and as for Meryl Streep, she's talented as hell but doesn't exactly strike me as smart.

Ezekiel Rage Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

Robert Forster should definitely be on the list. He's, to my knowledge, the only man in Hollywood that's also in the Triple Nine Society (aka one of the most selective High IQ Societies in the world) (99.9999th percentile). I know it's not based on intelligence, but if it's not, then it should be the 50 most creative people in Hollywood. Or more appropriately, the 50 people in Hollywood with the best manager for picking good roles.

nominus Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

Plus, if you don't add Justin Timberlake this second, I will hang myself in my closet.

Jonathon Marrs Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

Lorne Michaels, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, and Michael J. Fox don't live in Hollywood, but, I still think they're geniuses.

Cliff Hustable Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 09:25 AM EST

How could they not include those guys from Silver Polish Productions? They have the funniest webisode series online!!!

DeadSerious Sun, Dec 2, 2007 at 05:38 AM EST

Wow...you can argue about a lot of these, I suppose, but no Eastwood? That alone invalidates this list. I think your criteria are so wide as to be essentially meaningless, but Clint fits into just about every one you mentioned. Smart now? In the last four years, he's given us four films nominated for multiple awards, including 4 best dir noms, 2 best pic noms, and a best pic win. Financial success? How about Quigley's top 10 money-making stars 21 times?? He also owns several businesses. Reaching beyond the borders of career? How about mayor of Carmel and CA parks commisioner? Did I mention accomplished jazz musician? I mean, c'mon...I have some issues with the inclusions/exclusions, but this one is a no-brainer. BTW, I would have like to have seen you include Christian Bale, especially since you once called him one of the "most creative people in Hollywood." Does "creative" not count as "smart"? I'd stake him against just about anyone else in the list.

Except Clint, of course. :)

me Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 10:27 PM EST

You should have payed more attention to these people being smart not how you liked them in front of the camera

RoboPanda Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

Wait, was EW ever credible? Maybe the drunkards (I mean "experts") over at filmdrunk would know.

Hey, Lance, I think you just served EW. You know what that means . . .

RoboPanda Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 10:18 PM EST

Jerry Bruckheimer, seriously? I miss EW's credibility almost as much as Pearl Harbor sucked.

Da General Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 08:29 PM EST

Was this a serious list or has April come early? Will Smith thats cool, Tyler Perry, sure, but no Denzel Washington or Lawernce Fishburne, Forrest W, John Singleton?!!! While some feminist complain about the gender on the list. Im exteremly disappointed with the people of color on this list. EW you truly dropped the ball on this one. Next time save us all the trouble.

Kit Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 07:32 PM EST

I second JenJen's comment. Why is this list mostly men? And why are the few women on the list pushed toward the bottom half?

Lawl Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 06:05 PM EST

I love how you people are forgetting that these people are on the list because they are Smart and have to do with MOVIES!! Also they are smart because they make good choices in terms of what they do in their respective fields in the film industry, not because they went to Harvard or are actual "geniuses.
Well done to EW for trying to come up with the list.

Jonathon Marrs Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Even John Travolta, Harrison Ford, Andrew Davis, Francis Ford Coppola, Glen A. Larson, Rob Reiner, James G. Robinson, Bugs Bunny and more.

Lance at FilmDrunk Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

That you included Jerry Bruckheimer proves you have no credibility.

"Why in God's name is Angelina Jolie on this list and to add insult to injury her name appears before Cate Blanchett?? Are you kidding me EW?? What is the obsession here? Her movies are ok... she is on the cover of some tabloid every week, is that "smart" to you??"

Having his or her face on a tabloïd doesn't mean that you're stupid... If you were a celebrity, I could take a picture of you, create a story about you, and put you on the cover of the People magazine, that doesn't make you stupid at all... What you wrote though, doesn't make any sense...

Jenny Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

Criss Angel should be on this list.

CJ Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 09:17 AM EST

Angelina Jolie should definitely be on this list, because as everyone seems to be pointing out, she is not the greatest actress, her movies have not performed very well at the box office, and yet she is still basically the most famous actress in hollywood. The list isn't about who is the better actress, it is about who has shown they have the smarts to get by in a very tough industry.

Charlie Bronze Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 06:27 AM EST

Who's that guy who's made millions from strapping on a fat woman of color suit with hilarious consequences? Queen Latifah. Yeah, he should be on the list. What's the list for again? So is this Filmdrunk any good?

brock Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 06:20 AM EST

Seriously??? Only 12 of them are women??

DBibby Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 05:21 AM EST

I feel stupider for having read this page.

Jacktion! Sat, Dec 1, 2007 at 02:15 AM EST

Mr. Nominus and Ms. Eibmoz, I accept your challenge! All of you should come to www.filmdrunk.com with me, and watch me wipe the floor with them! EW.com readers, it is time for us to unite! Let us flood that site with our wit and brilliance. That'll show them!

Bruce Schaper Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 09:28 PM EST

Ridley Scott is not on this list?...palease

nominus Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

Oops. I meant 30% may not be idiots. 7 out of 10 of you should probably apply for federal disability and stay home. Out of public where you can't talk to other people. For our safety and yours.

nominus Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

After reading through these comments, I've come to the conclusion that maybe 30% of you people that commented are idiots. The ones that arent, come to filmdrunk.com. Some of you seem right on.

Eibmoz Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

The fact that some of them even made the list negates all the others.
www.filmdrunk.com No, not spamming, just agreeing with previous commenter that it rocks and doesnt kiss hollywoods ass

nominus Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 07:24 PM EST

If anyone wants to know what I think about this, lets discuss. Meet me at "filmdrunk" and enter the thread discussing this. Of course, add a . and then the standard com. remove quotes.

Mel Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 07:04 PM EST

No Joss Whedon? Are you freaking kidding me?

Dee Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

Tom Hanks belongs high on the list.

Amanda Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:44 PM EST

Some of those people I don't think should be on the list and one that I think should of been on the list is Russell T. Davies who tried to tackle more controversial projects that others would not.

Guiguioh Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

Where is George Lucas ? He should be on that list.

Kendra Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

Anyone heard of Helen Mirren....??

Mary Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

And where is Steve Jobs ^^?

Rachel Cohen Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

Maryl Steep has degrees from Vassar and Yale--most of the other actors listed are high school drop outs. Or does smart mean "recently mentioned in EW"?

Where's Deborah Landis-- she designed Indiana Jones, earned a PhD, wrote a book and teaches at USC.

tromba Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

Tom Cruise never even mentioned? This list is indeed arbitrary and worthless.

ruth ainsley Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

Not on point...preparing for TV. If Craig Ferguson and Kathy Griffin aren't at the top of that list...Don't do any more lists. They are irreverant and think so fast on their feet they push the boundaries and remind us most celebrities are jokes to enjoy. And at the very top of the list is Jon Stewart who is smart, funny and keeps us informed when we can't get information...And amazingly handsome, too. And Bill Mahr has a social sense not to be overlooked. Go do it right. No Angelinas on the TV list, please.

Kevo Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

What has Ben Affleck done to be on this list? I mean Hollywoodland was a good movie and all and Cry Baby Cry seems decent enough but I would put Matt Damon, who steered clear of the tabloid romances and for the most part picked decent movie roles over Ben Affleck.

Is James Cameron on this list for his Entourage guest appearance? I can't figure out what else he has done lately to be number 3.

Sean Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

I would think doing Rendition and Lions for Lambs would land Meryl Streep 6th place on the 50 Dumbest People in Hollywood.

Joe Accountant Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

Very smart to add Tyler Perry. His movies have had a greater ROI (Return on Inventment) than ANY other movie producer in the last 5 years. I think sometimes people forget the movie bsuiness is just that, a BUSINESS! Tyler Perry is the best stock in Hollywood.

Dude Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

People who made this list show as much as they know about "the business" by adding a fictional character to the group. Class "A" tools if you ask me.

John Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

Brian Grazer is number 11? You gotta be kidding me. He produced "The Grinch" which was one of the worst movies ever made!!!!! That doesn't strike me as very bright.

joycelyn Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

What about Lawrence Fishburn? I agree with you on Angelina Jolie, she's very smart for a young woman.

Jasmine Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

I was quite happy to see Tyler Perry on the list. He is briliant yet noticed little by outsite his genre. There are definitely some shady characters on the list but having him on the list helps a ton! Good Work!

nostar Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

If this list is not about power, then I'm the father of Angelina Jolie's children. "Smartness" (the Hollywood definition) is just another passing fad of the Hollywood power elite, like driving Priuses and buying Third World babies. If you look at who has the real juice in LaLaLand right now, this list is totally predictable. Nice try, EW.

m.a.t. Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

What about Glenn Close? She should be high up on the list, at least as high as Jodie Foster. Maybe you're saving her for the television list, since that's where she's been this year?

Alyson Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Where's Don Cheadle? Not only does he make intelligent movies, but he co-authored an intelligent, thought-provoking book on the ongoing genocide in Darfur, "Not On Our Watch."

lauren Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

Why isn't Tina Fey on this list??? Oversight!!!

Peter Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

What about Howard Stern, Like or hate him, he seems to know what he is doing

Toni Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

I am not sure what you intended with this list and your reasoning for some of the names on it. But one name that should be on this list is Robert Redford, with his Sundance studio and all that he does for new people coming into the industry. That not only makes him smart, but also he has change the course of the way films are made today and tomorrow.

Sofia Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

Hey, where's Natalie Portman?! She went to Harvard and is in awesome films.

Jeff Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

If JJ Abrahms is not in Top 10, this is list is 100% bogus.

Kevin Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 09:34 AM EST

I missed Dame Judy Dench and Anne Hathaway. Both seem pretty smart to me. I also would have considered Steve Carrell.

Mary Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 06:48 AM EST

I think this list looks pretty accurate. As far as tabloids and Angelina are concerned, she probably doesn't have any control over that and it has no bearing on whether she's smart or not. I would however add someone else to the list, fairly close to the top, Robert Redford. His production, direction and contribution to the business has been substantial and should be recognized.

Leo Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 04:30 AM EST

I'm your big fan! I created a forum on a nudist dating site called naturistspace.org and posted all my collections about you there,I'd like to make some like minded frineds...just hit me up with the same usename!

Craig Winnett Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 02:45 AM EST

Who the hell cares?

PennyB Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 01:44 AM EST

Timothy Regler, Exec.Prod. Judge Judy
Tim began in the industry as a "go-for" at Ralph Edwards Prod. Worked as Stage Manager on Name that Tune,Directed on People's Court, and help make Judge Judy who she is today...just ask her. And no I am not his mother...just someone who knows you went for the obvious...and missed the ones who have paid their dues. PS he is also and member of mensa:)

moe Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:32 AM EST

Tina Fey should be on this list. She's a fabulous writer and a good actress. Don't you watch 30 Rock? And, Alec Baldwin ... ok, he left his kid an awful message, but he's a brilliant actor with an incredible resume. Maybe he's a PIA, but he's a SMART PIA ~ and is ANYONE living a better guest host on SNL???

Loie Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:19 AM EST

Angelina carries her babies around like Paris Hilton does her dogs!!!!!

Clarity Fri, Nov 30, 2007 at 12:14 AM EST

Emily: Thank you. I couldn't have said it better myself. Angelina Jolie's intelligence lies not in her "humanitarianism" or adopting (and certainly not in her acting), but in her shrewd manipulation of the media and public opinion: She has successfully pulled off the most stunning reversal of reputation in celebrity history. The extent to which she rigidly controls her image is nothing short of genius.

That said, Anne: Educate yourself. "Did it on her own"?! Jolie is famous because of her father, and because of her looks, which came from her father. I wish people would look closely and think critically: She is not all she pretends to be.

Susannah Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:23 PM EST

After considering the other posts, I have this recommendation: dump Ben Stiller from the list, put Ben Affleck in his #20 place, & make room on the list for Sofia Coppola. (Props to Rocio!) I didn't like "Virgin Suicides", but "Lost In Translation" & "Marie Antoinette" were interesting & entertaining. Ms. Coppola puts a lot of hard work & thought into directing. She is improving with every film she makes, & I am definitely looking forward to her next one.

Scott Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:10 PM EST

Thank you EW for furthering my opinio not to waste my money on your magazine. Ummm..GEORGE LUCAS not on the list?!?! I guess when you start the premier special effects company and have over three of the top 10 movies of ALL TIME to your resume, that's doesn't mean jack. I mean, your # 50, Ben Affleck has made some great movie choices. Gigli anyone? Yep, that's one smart cookie.

Susannah Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:01 PM EST

I think you have Ben Affleck & Ben Stiller mixed up. Mr. Affleck has not only won a well-deserved Oscar in screenwriting, he has recently been widely praised for his excellent (first-time!) directing of "Gone Baby Gone". Recent dramatic acting roles such as his riveting portrayal of George Reeves in "Hollywoodland" reinforce his considerable talent. However, Mr. Stiller has done little but appear in a series of tiresome comedies largely featuring the more charismatic members of his "group" such as Vince Vaughn & Owen Wilson. (The "wince factor" on a complete viewing of "Starsky & Hutch" has to be over 500 alone.) Mr. Stiller has been trading on his father's famous name for years, but his business decisions aren't smarter than Mr. Affleck's, & he doesn't have the background of hard work that Mr. Affleck has. Your list needs a re-think, if not a do-over.

Austin Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:58 PM EST

It is clear that EW has not set a well-defined criteria here for 'smart'. Gina Davis is a member of American Mensa and she didn't make the list at all?

timetraveler Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:38 PM EST

I have an X-stamp for this kind of stuff. Let's see where is it... OH, here it is:

BULLSHIT!!!

Clauida Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:29 PM EST

OMG...his eyes there so cut but yet sexy and seductive... I believe you will drive all the women on naturistspace.org crazy once you get naked!! LOL!

jason Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:18 PM EST

They are using a hidden criteria of big boobs for intelligence.. hence, Angelia. otherwise, that makes noooo sense.

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 09:44 PM EST

This is an absolute joke and an insult to Martin Scorcese, who has definitely made an impact on the movie industry.
Cate Blanchett who has been in some incredible and different movies the past three years (all of her career really) ranked number 45.
And what movie has Angelina made recently that had an impact on the industry? Unless you count Mr & Mrs Smith - the result of making that movie certainly had an impact on Hollywood tabloids.

SP Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 09:35 PM EST

For those who don't think the folks on the list are "smart", read the introduction to the article again. This list isn't just about book smarts and IQ.

michael Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 09:31 PM EST

ummm tina fey wasn't on there???

Shelly Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 08:34 PM EST

So, by "smart," they don't actually mean anything at all to do with being smart. This is the most arbitrary and absurd list I have ever seen.

Chelle Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 08:16 PM EST

Matt Damon, Hollywood's most profitable actor, is not one of the 50 smartest people in Hollywood? Really? Did EW just pulls names out of a hat?

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

I don't think you have enough comedians on the list. Comedy is the greatest form of intellegence. Jon Stuart and Conan O'Brien need to both be near the top of the list. Stuart helped change how a generation will view politics, and was smarter about it then most politicians.

Slim Nelson Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

No Kanye West? He's smarter than 25 of the 50!!!

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 07:02 PM EST

As soon as I saw Anjelina Jolie this list lost its credibility.

Debra M Kraft Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

Ben Stiller and Will Farrell are two of the most obnoxious persons in Hollywood. How did they ever get on your list? And as far as Angie Jolie goes, she is a smart lady, but even smart ones make stupid choices.

TanyaS. Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

I agree with this list to an extent. ANGELINA JOLIE, JODIE FOSTER, SARAH POLLEY, MERYL STREEP AND CATE all deserve a spot on the list.
These ladies are remarkable in their own right and come across in their interviews as nothing short of knowledgeable and are very poised.
It’s nice that they are being recognized.
Congratulations to them.
I’ve enjoyed reading the comments from those of you who have managed to express your likes/dislike of EW's choices in a civilized and well thought out manner, but I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the harsh and irrational comments on this blog about the women on this list came from the mouths of other women. Instead of supporting these women you I can't understand why you would feel the need to degrade them.
As a woman I find such behaviour really embarrassing.

Johnny Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 06:10 PM EST

Matt rocks, Ben's a looser, and Angie? C'mon, Brad can act, she can't. To leave out ROBERT Rodrigues, and Quentin is also a slur, likewise Sophia, and what about the Guylenhall siblings? Where's Johnny? So many Wonder Women missing too!

Kay Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

George Lucas, Lucas Arts, USC Film school donation of over 100 million. Who else is doing as much for young creative minds in the Biz? He does far more behind the scenes right now than he is given credit for.

Alex Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

where's Heidi Montag?

James Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 05:27 PM EST

Reading some of the comments here has been utterly embarassing. A bunch of people who can't spell nor use a drop of grammar spewing hatred towards people they've never personally. So Jolie is not smart because she was in Beowulf? Streep is not smart because all she does in her life is grab a script and act? Johnny Depp is "lucky" he got the part for pirates, thus not smart; The irony having dumb people tell us what they "think".

janewelch@triad.rr.com Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

Your list is certainly top heavy with men. Why is that? Looks like some serious realignment/shuffling is needed. Why not list in alpha order so it does not look so contrived..and ego appeasing. I dare you...

Craig Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

Streep? Clooney? MOORE?

This is an Onion article, isn't it.

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

Did I read this correctly that the list is about this year?
If so the Judd Apatow being at the top is right on. Any movie he touched this year was gold.
Ben Stiller did not to anything to further film. He just does the same movie over and over again with a different leading lady and title.
Angelina? Really? Maybe because she makes a lot of money, but that's the only reason I can see that fit into the criteria.
I agree, there should be reasons listed by the names.
(I agree with Ben Affleck being on the list, he's a smart guy very knowledgeable on the film industry and well spoken in general. The only problem people seem to have with him is his J-Lo relationship and Gigli... and Armageddon....

TSKHAN Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

Not surprised, but disappointed, to see so few African-Americans, on the list...

fancy Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

Angelina Jolie is not only smart but she is also intelligent, she comes from a family of geniuses from her Dad's side. Her uncle is a world renowned Geologist, her other Uncle is a sucessful musician song writer, who became a professional gamble specializing in balckjack and horseracing. Of course, her Dad is Oscar winning Jon Voight.

Movies Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

What a sick joke Ben Affleck who is more famous for making a lot of bad movies like Gigli, and dating dumb actresses named Jennifer makes the list but somebody like Clint Eastwood doesn't.

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:05 PM EST

Here's some people who should be considered: Don Cheadle, the Wachowski Brothers, Alfonso Cuaron, the Weinsteins, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, to name a few. Not sure if I agree with Sacha Baron Cohen, since the Borat character came from his TV show. I would definitely put him close to the top of a television list, though.

rafe Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

I agree with Angelina, Cate B and Jodie are smart women. Meryl, she is a great actress, but she doesnt sound smart.

I dont agree with Ben A, or even Ben Stiller, or even Johnny Depp, I think he is more lucky than smart. Lucky that he got the part in the Pirates.

Most of them, I dont even know, so I dont think they are smart enough coz they are not even famous.

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

you lost me at angelina jolie. really? I mean really.

faye Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

Angelina is definitely smart, she should be higher on that list!

As for Meryl Streep, is she really that smart and why is she No.6? I think she is just a good actress, but i dont think she is that smart. She has been in the movie industry for so long, but she made a project of her own, never produce or directed. It seems to me she is just given a script and acts it out. Im not sure you can call that smart.

Ben Affleck: Jack-ass of all trades

Nancy Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

After reading the criteria, I agree with stupid and arbitrary

anne Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

Of course Angelina is smart, perhaps the smartest! She is only a high school graduate but look what she has accomplished as an actress and Humanitarian. She is the hottest female celebrity right now, and she did it on her own, without a publicist and she is smart not to say no to Brad and to give him the baby that he wanted.

Brad Pitt should also be there, instead of ben Affleck. Not only that Brad chooses his films well, he has become a successful producer now.

Ben Affleck and George Clooney are way too overrated!

Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

Seriously, how is Angelina Jolie leading the industry forward? Because she does charity work? There are dozens of actors that do charity work... Because she adopted children? While that is certainly admirable and selfless, that doesn't seem to fit your above criteria unless you are suggesting she did it to further her career...

wrinkledwalnut Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

And while we are on this list of Hollywood smarts, shouldn't we be required to spell check before posting about people being smart of dumb? i.e. Dylan lover's "Cate Blanchett should be hire than Angelina." I do believe you meant "higher."

alma Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

Angelina Jolie?????? this is pathetic. Her name on this list tells everything about how serious this project is. Big shame Holivood, you can do better than it. Let her stay where she belongs, on the front page of those cheep magazines.

Emily Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:14 PM EST

I don't know, Angelina bashers. Anyone who can consistently lure men from committed relationships, make shockingly stupid, ill-informed remarks about politics to the press, buy foreign babies and use them as fashion accessories for publicity, decry media censorship while restricting her own press coverage and still have some people believing she's a genius worthy of sainthood has to be smart on *some* level.

wrinkledwalnut Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

I'm extremely disappointed that Ashley Judd is not on this list. She is an exceptionally intelligent woman, a gifted actress, and a generous humanitarian with on going efforts. She uses her star power to help others and stays out of the drama mills in Hollywood.

KRG Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

Where is MADONNA?????? She should be near the top!!!

Dave Axford Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

44. Roderick Jaynes, editor.
That's FUNNY! Ol' Roderick doesn't actually exist. He's a pseudonym for the Coen brothers.

kim Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

What the heck? You put Ben Affleck on the list (sure, the kid is a good writer) but no KEVIN SMITH?
Redo the damn list.
(and maybe justify some of your results - that would be smart...)

sam smith Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

You have to be kidding! Angelino Jolie and not Tommy Lee Jones a Harvard graduate.

Sara Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:35 PM EST

Where's Larry David?

J from VA Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

Have to agree with the Angelina hate. A Mighty Heart wasnt that mighty and she was a cartoon character in Beowulf. How does this qualify her as smart. Just because she goes to Darfur every two weeks doesn't mean she's one of the smartest people in Hollywood. Jodie and Cate should have been ranked well ahead of her. Stiller is so played out I assume this is a list of the smartest people of 2002. Also the new web design stinks. I don't think the old one was broke. All this is said with love.

Sandy Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

Angeline Jolie!! What makes her smart taking someone husband. Smart does she even know what the word is!!!

Ooba Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

Completely agree - Matt Damon should be on this list.

Cliff Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST

I just skimmed the list, so I'm sure I missed Matt Damon. He's on there, i'm sure of it.

Nice job with Jodie Foster and Meryl Streep though. When I see their movies, I find myself even watching their hands, because every detail has obviously been given some consideration.

RJ Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

I really hate when people knock Ben. Give him credit for directing, writing, etc. He is a smart guy and anyone who have actually heard him debate about politics, or talk about the industry (aka his writing or his directing) would know that.

new yorker Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

Yes, you explained the criteria, but I feel like there definitely has to be an explanation of why certain people's names are on there. Maybe EW should have a special section where each person who's on there's achievements are chronicled to give us more of a context. For instance, I know why Judd Apatow is there, and I know that Emaanuel Lubezki is a great cinematographer of works like Children of Men (excellent movie) and Y tu mamá también and that Mary Zophres is the costume designer for "No Country for Old Men" but the average movie junkie may not know that and so if you provided some more information on what works of theirs you considered as well as other persons in the same field, and why you chose them over their compatriots it would be really helpful. I mean, I for one would like to know why Brad Pitt, whose production company plan B produced "The Departed" and "Running with Scissors" is not on there along with Matt Damon who has done some of the best work out there. Thanks!

Courtney Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

I have to agree with the general sentiment - Angelina Jolie's movies are generally lackluster and seem to have little to do with moving the business forward - while Matt Damon is left out in the cold. For shame, EW. This list is as lame a reason for a new issue as ever. And i'm a die hard fan of the magazine...

Faith Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

No Matt Damon!? For shame.

Kennedy Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 08:35 AM EST

Ben Affleck, indeed!! Biggest ego in Hollywood maybe, but one of the smartest?! If "emotional intelligence" was one of the criteria for making it onto the list, how did he get on it? The man is morally bankrupt. I guess that's a plus in Hollywood...

EAP Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 06:33 AM EST

What? No Leo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton, or Robert Rodriguez? And what the hell happenned to Kate Winslet?

Bourne Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:59 AM EST

Ben Affleck??? At least you put him last, but what the heck is he doing on that list, his a wannabe actor, politician and now a wannabe Director. Matt Damon was the chief screenwriter for Good Will Hunting and Gone Baby Gone was written with the help fo Aaron Stockard and once again Matt Damon.

Matt Damon should be on that list not Ben Affleck.

Adam Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 04:21 AM EST

This list seems very ill-prepared. I feel like a third of the people on this list have or had made a lot of bad movies.

Kristi Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 03:39 AM EST

While there are definitely a few on this list that I don't agree with, well done for including Sarah Polley.

smutsnatcher Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 02:01 AM EST

This isn't one of my fave lists yall have done. Ben Stiller has grown stale. I know Night at the Museum made tons of money, but I fell asleep during it and wasn't as entertained as previous movies in that genre like Indian in the Cupboard, etc. Jodie is smart and one of my fave actresses but if she was really really smart after reading the screenplay and before accepting the role and filming started, would've noticed the plot holes in The Brave One and especially the ridiculous ending and make the screenwriter make some major changes. What, no Clint Eastwood, Coen Bros, Wachowski Bros, PTAnderson, Robert Rodriguez, Robert Zemekis, Zach Snyder. And if you're going to include JJ Abrams (you said separate tv list later), you need to include Ryan Murphy, Joss Whedon, etc. Thelma Schoonmaker but no Marty Scorsese?

donner Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 01:04 AM EST

sigh...more lists...more more more...this is like Awards-Show-Overload...do we really care? does it really matter? Hollywood keeps coming out with crap, whether they are smart folks or not...bah...

gina Thu, Nov 29, 2007 at 01:04 AM EST

woooow that's cool http://www.paraguaydelivery.com

wall Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 08:38 PM EST

Rita Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 08:24 PM EST

what about josh schwartz, greg berlanti, brad pitt? why the heck is ben affleck on this list?

Rita Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 08:24 PM EST

what abouty josh schwartz, greg berlanti, brad pitt? why the heck is ben affleck on this list?

What The to What The Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 06:52 PM EST

Whoa, Whoa wait... What the, you think that hack Paul Haggis should be on the list? And, worse, you think Crash was smart? Have you seen a film, like, ever?

What the? Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

Hey, no Paul Haggis?.. he won an Oscar for Crash, the SMARTEST movie of the last 5 years, and has contributed to many more thoughtful projects than most of these hacks...
pitiful...

Raiden Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

I can't shake the feeling that this list is stupid and abitrary.

Jane Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

I think Jodie Foster should be higher she's the smartest actor in hollywood. Cate Blanchett should also be higher. Angelina should not be on the list she's not that smart she just tries to sound smart. Reese Witherspoon is pretty smart. Other smart people that aren't as big stars are James Woods and Geena davis and David Duchovny. Kate winslet seems much smarter than Angelina too.

JenJen Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

Wow. 2 Women in the top 15, and only a little more than a dozen in the whole list. I'm disappointed.

Mike Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

Even after reading your criteria twice, this list makes no sense to me. Why in the world is someone like Diablo Cody on the list who's done exactly one thing? All that says is she has a great publicist. There are others to take issue with, but whatever...

Rocio Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

Where's Sofia Coppola. Marie-Antoinette was genius. Props to Guillermo Del Toro.

Dylan Lover! Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:23 PM EST

Cate Blanchett should be hire than Angelina. She played Bob Dylan and it wasn't sacrilege it was art. She embodied my one true love and embodied him. She's the best actress out there and a gift to filmaking.

Though I may quibble with some of these, I'm thankful you weren't suckered into putting Leonardo DiCpario on this list.

Jayel Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

Can EW just found a second magazine devoted entirely to Judd Apatow? I have nothing whatsoever against him, personally or professionally, but while I'm very interested in pop culture, movies, and even comedy, he has yet to make a movie I have the slightest interest in seeing. (I'm a 43-year-old woman who sometimes even describes herself as a feminist, though only with great trepidation - he pretty obviously isn't writing for or about me.) Yet week after week, list after list, my favorite media magazine devotes endless and adoring copy to him. It makes me long for the reign of "Arrested Development."

Stephen Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

Isn't it interesting how the people who lead EW's 50 or 100 Top Whatever list always seem to have some big movie or other product just about to come out. It makes me think these are just not-so-cleverly disguished promotional campaigns. Huh.

Rese Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 04:23 PM EST

Why in God's name is Angelina Jolie on this list and to add insult to injury her name appears before Cate Blanchett?? Are you kidding me EW?? What is the obsession here? Her movies are ok... she is on the cover of some tabloid every week, is that "smart" to you??
