'Lost' "mobisodes" will release as Webisodes Nov. 12

The new season of Lost begins Monday! Kinda. ABC has (quietly) announced that it will begin posting its Lost "mobisodes" (originally intended to debut with Verizon Wireless customers) on Monday, Nov. 12, at abc.com. The series of two- to three-minute vignettes — collectively known as "Missing Pieces" — kicks off with "The Watch," focusing on Matthew Fox's character. The micro-stories aren't deleted scenes — they're newly-shot material that fits into the larger Lost saga; it's up to the fans to figure out where they belong. A new Webisode will post each Monday.

There's a potential game-changer in the latest Webisode, "So It Begins"

The union is the problem. Were it not for the union, these writers could negotiate their own deal and be paid what they are worth. Because of the union, they are held to the deal that the collective can negotiate, so these "premium" writers are held back by their less successful colleagues.

I don't think ABC's done a good job at explaining what these are. It makes sense *now*, but was confusing for a while.

As for the strike, it saddens me to hear so many selfish viewers out there. If you would research what the writers are striking for, it is VERY reasonable. The studios have taken advantage of a 1987 VHS tape deal they made with the writers. To be close-minded and to equate "unions" with negative comments is not fair. In this case the unions are doing good for their members.

What also is unclear (and something else to think about) is that what the writers settle with this strike will set the stage for actors' unions, too.

The studios stand to make billions from digital distribution of shows, and the writers are still working on 20-year-old revenue deals meant to deal with the advent of VHS tapes!!!!

Yes, milton, everyone should be paid at turn of the 19th century rates.

milton Fri, Nov 9, 2007 at 08:19 AM EST

Strikes and the unions that cause them are an economic drag.

Ooh, actually, I just re-read it, and it specifically states that there will be no residuals for broadcast on the Internet if it's free to view. I wonder if that stifles the compensation set up under the premise that the segments would be broadcast via subscriber-based mobile networks.... hmm... Jeff! Use your sources and get back to us.

The WGA agreed to terms for compensation with regards to the mobisodes. If the link above doesn't go through, the agreement is available in PDF form on the WGA site.

While normally this would be very exciting, if there are advertisements attached to these - I will not be watching.

mawhi Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

ugh! I love LOST but feel really uncomfortable watching these if they are hurting the striking writers. Yeah LMB- I still do not understand.

Right now I am not even concerned about the seasons being delayed- I just want the strike to be settled!

amelia Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

Yeah, more tantalizing Lost info only to be taken away come Feburary. ::crying::

Bernard Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

Shaun, correction:

"Says Lost cocreator Carlton Cuse, "Damon [Lindelof] and my concern about running the [eight] episodes we will have made is that it will feel a little like reading half a Harry Potter novel, then having to put it down. There is a mini-cliff-hanger at the end of Episode 8, but it's like the end of an exciting book chapter; it's not the end of the novel. Damon and I didn't write [the ending of Episode 8] differently [with the looming strike in mind]. We wrote it to be the ending of Episode 8."

I don't think the new season will be delayed that badly. There's eight episodes, half the new season, already in the can. I read an article with (I think) Cuse, and he said that episode 8 ends with a big cliffhanger and that fans might be frustrated if that epiosde ends the season due to the strike. It's possible ABC will hold Lost until later in the spring or something, depending on how long the strike goes. But I'm confident we'll have Lost back sometime in 2008. I sure hope so!

Chris Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

I heard on the radio this morning that the Feb 2008 season of Lost may be postponed due to the writer's strike. Until when? Feb 2009! This is per the producers. Let's hope this isn't true or won't happen.

LMB Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 10:57 AM EST

I'm still confused on this. That link says the producers and actors settled individual deals with ABC, but it didn't say the writers did as well. The question here is whether or not the writers will be getting residuals from the advertising on these webisodes? Not trying to cause trouble, just trying to understand this. And I'm with Pam, I won't be watching out of solidarity either way.

floyd Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 10:51 AM EST

Who cares about the writer's strike, we need new writers anyway! All this material is recycled!

Marc Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

who cares about the strike... just give us what WE, the viewers, want. If we're not satisfied, they wont get paid!

Pam Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

Great, but I won't be watching due to the writers' strike -- solidarity!

hope this additional information helps!!

to LMB Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

Actually they are. The payment structure that was independently negotiated by the writers and actors for the webisodes is similar to what the writers are currently striking for. There is a separate article on this site (sorry, don't have link) detailing exactly this.

LMB Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

I'm a huge "Lost" fan and I absolutely will not be watching these webisodes and neither should any of you while the WGA is on strike. This is exactly what the writers are fighting for. They are not being paid for these webisodes.
