Kate Bush: Oscar contender?

New Line wants to be part of the Academy Awards one way or another, and their best best may be their just-announced news that British singer/songwriter Kate Bush will have her original song titled "Lyra" tacked onto the end credits of The Golden Compass. The song is named for Lyra Belacqua, the lead character in the movie played by newcomer Dakota Blue Richards. Bush, who in 2005 released Aerial, her first album in 12 years, has been on a role of late. Her album was a commercial success, and who knows, now we may get to see her perform at the Oscars.

None of the comments about whether or not the selection has to come from the movie or whether it can come from the credits matters, because the song is terrible. The lyrics are repetitive and sound like they were written by a 6 six year old. The song is just not good.

Hairspray does qualify. They are pushing Come so far, got so far to go for best original song. It was written exclusively for the movie.

Kate Bush is more mainstream to Academy voters than you might think. Couple that with the lack of material eligible or even submitted each year for best original song, and you have a strong contender. Does "Hairspray" qualify if most (if not all) of the songs were performed in the broadway version?

It would be great if that happens. She might finally get the public recognition here that she deserves. But the odds are small that it will. She has not preformed here since 1978 and has made comments that she does not understand the American market and finds it very big. She is the anti Britney or Paris in that she dispises the whole cult of celebrity thing. She did not release an album in 12 years to keep a zone of privacy while raising a son. I would wounder if she would want the type of press that preforming at the Oscars might open her up to. But you are right in that she has been by her standards a lot more public lately.

I can't wait for this movie. It's going to be amazing! And Kate Bush is definitely a more inspired choice than Coldplay, as was rumoured.

"Into the West" by Annie Lennox, for the Return of the King was only played over the credits and won best song. So, your information is incorrect.

didn't i read an article in EW this summer that said the best original song nods had to be from songs found DURING the movie, not at the end? something to do with screeners for song nods would only be the clips, not the whole movie?
