Fox's Latest Reality Show: 'The Moment of Truth'

Nov 20, 2007, 09:40 PM | by Dan Snierson

Categories: TV Biz

With the strike in week 3, the networks are planning to showcase a fair amount of reality TV in the coming months. And the folks at Fox will soon unveil one of those is-it-genius-or-is-it-the-end-of-Western-Civilization? masterpieces. Introducing The Moment of Truth, a game show in which contestants can win up to $500,000 if they answer correctly—according to a polygraph test—a total of 21 probing personal questions. (Sample stumpers: Do you really care about starving children in Africa? Would you find your husband more sexually attractive if he lost 25 pounds?). Adding to the intrigue/discomfort is the fact that contestants will have to come clean in the presence of family and friends. Based on the highlight reel we watched, brace thyself for awkwardness, gasps, tears, and maybe even a touching moment or two. Creator/executive producer Howard Schultz—the Extreme Makeover guru who spent five years refining Truth; the pilot was originally shot for NBC—explains the appeal of his series thusly: "The world is swimming in B.S. This is a show that exposes all of that." (And then some: A Colombian version of the series was recently cancelled in the wake of a female contestant's admission that she had once hired a hit man to kill her husband. Luckily, the hit never occured.) Fox president of alternative entertainment Mike Darnell—who says he hasn't been this jazzed about a new show since Joe Millionaire—promises at least a slightly kinder and gentler Truth here in the States, though he notes with a chuckle: "I would never go on one of my own shows, but I wouldn't even go near this one." Hosted by Mark L. Walberg—emcee of Temptation Island—the Truth will be revealed on Jan. 23 after American Idol, which gives the strike-sidelined Stephen Colbert just enough time to work on that inevitable parody: The Moment of Truthiness.

I have a question why hasnt anyone considered doing a reality show on healthcare. I work at a hospital and finding coverage for some of these patients is very difficult.

Fish Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 03:10 PM EST

This show is an embarrasment. Makes me feel physically ill. Unreal that people would create this show, that people would go on it, that people would want to watch it. A sad, sad time in human history...

joe Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 09:59 PM EST

The Moment of Truth is so stupid; the contestants are actors, without a doubt.

Nlawson Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 08:22 AM EST

Come on we are about to quite watching this show. Sick, sick or re-running questions from first months (who cares) then you go to commercial....but wait...let's spoil it for everyone and let them know the next 5 questions!!. Get real - my husband and I are searching for the mute button and are getting sick and tired of it. If you can't find enough to say in the hour without repeating every show - well why not make it a 30 minute show. Obviously with the mute button on we aren't listening to commercials either. Hello!!!! anyone care???

Gill Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

there's no way this show is real. polygraph tests are NOT that accurate, not enough to be so confident in knowing what the truth actually is. there is no way that people would deliberately tear their lives apart for some money, like this would rip apart people's feelings. this is like jerry springer, just set up and fake because for some reason people like to watch other people destroy their lives, like in judge judy. for some reason, misery is amusing.

Jay Kay Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

This show is such a crock, with all the repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, - get my drift.
Bet this show was supposed to be 1/2 hour show & then they stretch it into an hour show.
We are no longer watching it, only because all the repeating, repeating, repeating, repeating, repeating is sickening !!

When is this show on Oklahoma time? It might be interesting to watch. Sure seems to be causing a lot of controversy.

HIck Sat, Apr 5, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

This show is hilarious, obviously the people that are disgusted by it are still watching... What's the big deal? Everyone knows that the contestant knows the questions beforehand and is out to reveal their true self to their family and friends. What is so funny is all the "mormons" on the program that are so sleazy and expect people to join their fake religion. Keep it coming. It is something to look forward to. And for those "parents" that don't want their kids to watch--turn off the tv. What? Like someone is forcing you to watch?

Helene Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:04 AM EST

Just read a (very) few of the other comments and I truly cannot believe how many gaulible people are really out there watching this phony, rehearsed show and falling for it. Scary to think what abit of our society looks like. Eeeegads!!!

Helene Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

Is this what they call a "show" TV is really going downhill. I have never watched so much phoniness in my entire life. It is SO obvious how it is rehearsed, the pretending to be "shocked" is revolting and above all "obvious". Do you really take us for complete idiots? I think the idiots are the ones that came up with this idea of a show. A MOMENT OF TRUTH, how extraordinarily contradictory. What a laugh.

yolanda Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

Ronnie Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

Its Ashame that the american people have stupd to such a new low for money, FOX should be ashamed of themselves as well.

KAK Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 10:06 AM EST

I have to say brovo to this show and the people who appear on it. I'm a regular viewer who thinks that if the people that contest on the show are FULLY aware of what they are about to face-then don't do it or buckle down and just do it!. I personaly feel some things are better off not being said NOR heard, but if these people are brave enough to hold their own lives "hostage" to a TV show and millions of viewers, then by all means, I will be watching. Money is a common greed WE all share, in one way or another, and it does talk.

Shows dont end marriages people do Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 03:56 AM EST

People are fussing over destroyed marriages...they were over before they came on. Blame the people, not the show. In this episode, the host practically begged her to stop. She thought it was worth it, so they didn't really have a marriage.

Jamie Fri, Mar 14, 2008 at 10:51 AM EST

I am writing to express my sincere disappointment in the new reality show: The Moment of Truth. This show is trash and distroys marriages and relationships by probing at the heart of people's intimate lives on national television. Why can't you focus on building relationships instead of humiliating people and crushing relationships. If people need to come clean with their past, it should not be up to a reality show that is focused on making millions from the viewing audience and not on the heart and lives of their contestants. I am disappointed that we have abased ourselves to this kind of entertainment and feel that you have taken lightly the permanent distruction that this show causes. Shame on you.

Wed, Mar 12, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

The moment of truth should NOT be on before 9pm or advertised with such detail. They are promoting this trash during American Idol, which millions of kids are watching. Isn't hard enough in America to raise a half way decent child. Fox is not helping matters!!! What a BS show!!

jim davis Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

hello!!!!! it's a pseudoscience (the polygraph AIKA "lie detector" more trash tv for those with mullets who live in trsiler parks to watch

Catbird Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 09:02 PM EST

I think that this new show "The Moment Of Truth" should be taken off the air. It gets to personal and it's ruining peoples lives. They should'nt have a show like this on the air anyways it's a discrase to society.

Bring back FIREFLY Sat, Mar 1, 2008 at 02:36 PM EST

Not to be off topic, but why does FOX keep wasting money on this junk/nonsense?

There is already an established fan-base for quality shows like Firefly, whose fandom has only increased after the release of the series DVD and the movie Serenity.

Seriously. Bring back Firefly. Please. Enough of this crap. People will respect Fox/Faux more if they brought back Firefly.

I am so shcoked that reality TV has come to this. The episode last night proves the moral behavior of this country has truly fallen by the wayside. I hope enough people are utterly disgusted that this show doesnt make it another week. And as far as the gal last night...Thankfully you walked away without a dime!!! You are an embarressment to your family and frinedsNo, the answer was correct, you are NOT a good person!....Your soon to be ex "husband" deserves much better.

melly Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 09:52 PM EST

She lost it all- and ruined her husbands life in the process.

james Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 09:04 PM EST

after ruining her marrage and exposing her infidelity, did she at least win the 100k or was it all for a big goose egg?

Judy W. Mon, Feb 25, 2008 at 08:25 PM EST

I'm watching this now, its unbelievable that they are pourpsly destroying this womans life with her family one question at a time, to bring an old boyfriend on the show to ask if she would leave her husband for him now and she says yes, is crazy. this is going too far. it needs to be off the air, someone is going to get hurt or killed ,the money is not worth anyones life. The quilt that these contestants must live with to achieve this money award is not worth it.

I have been watching the newest Fox show Moment of Truth. There was a contestant that has been on the last two nights that they said he was a gambler and worked at a race track. Then just 4 days ago i see the same guy being an actor on an infomercial for automobile finanicing. It ran this past Sat. January 26. Is this guy an actor or what? I think this show is a complete scam and they pay actors to act as contestants for ratings. I am going to contact every newpapaer possible to report this misleading of the american public. They should explain.

megan Tue, Jan 29, 2008 at 09:34 AM EST

hi iv been watching the show an im wondering how i can be a contestnant on this show im 24 years old and i have nothing to loose...

Paula Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 09:16 AM EST

I was looking forward to this show, but what a disappointment it turned out to be!!! NOONE wants to have the contestant take what seems to be forever to answer a question.."5 sec. is more then long enough but having to wait an eternity for some comptuerized voice to state the answer.. Please someone stick needles in my eyes, as that would be much more fun..
I lost interest real quick. This is exactly why most shows that have this huge delay...... don't last long! We live in a world of I want it NOW..The producers of this show should know this.. The leave it to beaver days are over.. Pick up the pace..
They could of had 3 people on and actually made people want to watch instead of getting irritated! I had about 20 people in my theater room and we all agree this shows not going to last if they continue to have the answers revealing drawn out way to long..
P.S. - The host is boring!!!!

Julie Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 01:49 AM EST

THIS SHOW IS SO FAKE!!!!!!
http://digg.com/television/Fox_s_Lie_Detector_Show_The_Moment_of_Truth_FAKE
this link tells you about that the contestant George is an actor. I used to watchd him on tv when I was a kid

T Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 01:07 AM EST

Ugggh...

Annnnnnd theeeeee answeeer isssssss......(1 hour later)

True.

I think I fell asleep before the "computer lady" returned with the answer. I woke up and she was just getting to the answer to the personal trainers first question.

I could see drawing out the answer at a pivotal point but they do it to every single question and it is driving me absolutely to extremes (like changing the channel to PBS to watch a whole hour of Antiques Roadshow and then change back to get the answer to the first question).

Fox’s newest show Moment of truth asks people personal private questions and exposes their secrets for money. In one preview it asks a woman if she has ever had sex for money. This show is disgusting garbage kids will watch this show and learn nothing valuable from it and the people at Fox should feel ashamed for putting on shows that demean integrity and buy out people’s dignities for money like paying a prostitute for sex. Fox is pure utter garbage sh*t! And the garbage of people who come up with it are sh*t as well

julie Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 05:18 PM EST

Reality TV is for people who don't have a life and are to lazy to go get one of their own so they just sit and watch what TV exec would like to believe is some elses real life.

sandra Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

I just wanted the internet to know about a company named Healthyrightnow who offers products such as Liporex which doesn't work and it is very expensive. One bottle is 85.00 and they promise no question ask to give money back if it doesn't. WELL, THEY DON'T KEEP THEIR PROMISE. THEY REFUSED MY BOTTLE WHEN I SENT IT IN REGISTERED MAIL. THEY LIE I WOULD SUGGEST NO ONE BUY THEIR PRODUCTS THEY ARE A RIPOFF !!

Lance Wed, Dec 5, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

They chose this crap over renewing Arrested Development? Fire the executives, they don't know programming at all anymore.
