'CSI' star Marg Helgenberger joins writers on picket line
CSI star Marg Helgenberger joined more than 60 writers on the picket line Monday afternoon outside of the Universal Studios lot, where her procedural drama is taped for CBS. Helgenberger was not scheduled to work Monday, so she agreed to carry a placard with the writers because, "I'm in total solidarity with them," she told the Hollywood Insider exclusively.
Helgenberger wasn't particularly surprised by the writers' decision to strike. "I had my doubts about things moving forward [after the weekend's negotiation]," said Helgenberger, who is married to SAG president Alan Rosenberg. She began picketing around 2:30 p.m. today. "Of course I held out hope, especially with all of that last-minute stuff with [former WGA President and ER exec producer] John Wells getting involved. It's sad it has come to this. Nobody wanted this to happen. Nobody."
Helgenberger, dressed in a casual tank top and slacks and wearing a floppy hat, said this was her first-ever opportunity to picket in Hollywood. "It's sort of fun!" she said, smiling. "I'm glad to be standing alongside these people. If there was ever a time in history to stand up, this is it. This is where you draw the line in the sand."
