'24' postpones season 7 due to strike

Categories: Strike, TV Biz

Even the mighty Jack Bauer is no match for a WGA strike: Fox has decided to postpone the previously scheduled January 13 debut of 24’s seventh season so Kiefer Sutherland’s alter ego will not be left hanging indefinitely in the middle of some world-saving story line. The series will finish shooting through episode 8 before shutting down production later this month, and it will likely be rescheduled at a time when this season’s episodes can be seen in consecutive weeks.

To fill the void left by 24, Fox has scheduled the premiere of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for Jan. 13 and 14.  Prison Break, which was scheduled to go off the air in December and return in April, will now get an early hiatus, following the Nov. 12 episode; the show will resume Jan. 14. American Idol will also return Jan. 15 and 16 with a two-night, four-hour debut.

Hmmmm, I can’t help but think the 24 creators are letting out a huge sigh of relief at the chance to stop production on an extremely troubled season at this point to try to regroup.

  • Behrooz

I agree. And perhaps this will give them an opportunity to finally find me.

  • Travis

    Behrooz. Hahaha.

I don’t mind that much. I have a feeling that the anxiety the producers had over this strike that everyone knew was coming adversely impacted last season. That sometimes happens-you’re so worried about what might happen in the future that you don’t focus properly on the task at hand. Hopefully they’ll come back from the strike (whenever that is) with a full tank of gas, raring to go.

Dear Lord, please don’t let them do this to Lost. I’ll have waited long enough by February.

  • Michelle

And this conveniently allows Kiefer the opportunity to serve his jail time without interrupting the production schedule.

  • James…

I’m bummed but maybe this year CTU will set up a perimeter and actually catch someone.

  • Ben

I’m not liking the Tony-is-back-and-he’s-badder-then-ever angle they’re going for, so maybe this is a good thing.

  • Garry

    I want my Chloe!

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COME ON HOLLYWOOD, SETTLE ALREADY, THE WRITERS DESERVE THEIR DUES!!!!

Seriously, I hope this doesn’t happen to Lost. I stopped watching 24 after the top-of-the-mountain escapism that was Season 5. There was no way, in my mind anyway, that they could top that amazing season (and referencing season 6 reviews i gather i was right).
But come on, dont do this to LOST! PLEEEEASE!!!

  • JEFFL

There is hope for Lost to be shown as scheduled, as they do have at least 8 shows done. However, after that, if the strike is not resolved, let the lull begin. As stated above, this is why 24 is being delayed, as they don’t want the fans to have to deal with a lull after so many shows. I have contacts in LA, and from what I’ve been told, talks probably will not resume until February-March at the earliest, which is a serious bummer for our shows. I’m hoping that they talk and resolve faster than that, for the sake of 24, and Lost.

For the Lost fans, here is a link to check out.

wow…you know I didn’t take the writer’s strike seriously because I just assumed there would be an 11th hour resolution and everybody would continue working. Now I realize how long this thing could drag out and how much of an effect it’s having. I’m usually the guy who hates it when celebrities or athletes demand more money…but this is just impacting SO MANY productions that I just want the writers to get what they want so everyone goes back to work.

  • Shannon S.

…plus, there’s a large percentage of viewers who might not come back to a show if it’s been on hiatus for too long. People already hold a grudge against shows like Lost for leaving them hanging on cliffhangers every week. Who’s to say more people won’t give up on shows if this strike continues for a while and viewers are left waiting for resolutions that won’t come? Man, PLEASE SETTLE THIS NOW!!!!

  • Phil

I beg to differ about sighing relief…The creators of 24 have gotta be sweating bullets right now, because what if the strike NOW continues on through til when Keifer has to report to jail for his D.U.I.? When he originally accepted to the jail time, he swore that it wouldn’t put any of the cast & crew of 24 on hiatus, but now he can’t exactly KEEP that promise since no one is sure when the Writers guild strike will end. I’d say if anything, this is pretty bad news for 24, NOT good news…

The irony about the possible postphonement of 24 and Lost until next season? DVD residuals are one of the major issues the WGA is striking over. And what two series were made to be watched on DVD? 24 and Lost. I think the first two seasons of 24 and the first season of Lost have each sold over a million copies on DVD. These two shows, in a way, are responsible for higher residuals the writers are asking for. It’s a shame they’re also the two shows that will be the most hurt by the strike.

  • matt

I agree hopefully the extra time will help them create a better season, but i am only looking forward to two things and that is for 24 and Lost to come back. Please don’t go away!!!

  • C Harms

I think this is very good. Let them take a break and come back strong, rather than rushing things and deliver another heavily criticised season. I don’t understand some fans. They are risking a bad end for a awesome show like 24.

  • Anonymous

They should also consider to skip the filmed episodes and start all over again. I want quality. I prefer no 24 above a bad 24!

If I’m not mistaken, Kiefer has the right to report to jail unannounced, doesn’t he? He could, presumably, go to jail right after they finish shooting the 8th episode and do his jail duty then. (Ha… I said duty)

  • Deb

Give the writers what they’re asking for already – Be fair with them! Good luck, writers! Hang in there!

  • jake

Everyone keeps saying that this will give 24 a chance to revise the season and make it better. 1 problem, who are the people who do that? The writers! And if their on strike right now, dont expect any new changes to the new season to occur during the hiatus!

  • May

Ok…I’m sooo upset about 24 season 7 being postponed! I mean like totally upset! I always look forward to the new season right after Christmas because there is really nothing to get all hiped up about! SETTLE SETTLE SETTLE!!! Do whatever it takes, but please get the writers back on the show! I need my 24 and I love my Jack Bauer!!!

  • Elizabeth

Wonder if Kiefer if/can renegotiate his DUI sentence that was scheduled around the production schedule.

  • khaled

please no postpones 24 season 7

  • Ryan K.

I say hold it off until 2009. After the shaky production start, a little breathing room will only benefit the show and allow the cast and crew to put together a stronger season.
For that matter, hold off Lost, too, if the strike is protracted. Fans may say they want those first eight episodes now, but when half the season has aired and it’s at least a four-month wait until the second half, they’ll be just as fickle and whiny as they were last year.

  • khaled

please no postpones 24 season 7
