Chris Carter: The truth about the 'X-Files' sequel

Oct 31, 2007, 06:34 PM | by Nicole Sperling

Categories: Movie Biz

X_l By now you know the truth because it's out there: Mulder and Scully are back. The long-awaited film sequel based on the beloved cult TV series will begin production this December in Vancouver, according to Twentieth Century Fox, with a release date set for July 25, 2008. (An official title is still being hammered out.) Creator Chris Carter says that the movie will focus on a stand-alone mystery rather than exploring the show's dense mythology. Beyond that, he's not spilling details, only saying, "It will be scary."

So what finally got the long-gestating project off the ground? According to Carter, who will direct the movie and co-write the script with X-Files exec producer Frank Spotnitz, years of contract disputes with Fox were resolved when the threat of an impending writers' strike came to a head. "If we don't do it now and the strike was protracted, it would force the movie to come out several years from now," he says. "And that was too late. It was either now or never." We like that answer too.

WELL...I WAS REALLY DISSAPOINTED WITH THE PICTURE, IS WAS GOOD, BUT NO GREAT. DAVID AND GILLIAN TALENTS WERE WASTED. THE STORY WAS NOT GREAT..BORING..BUT MAYBE ANOTHER MOVIE THAT PRESENTS THE BOTH LOVING EACH OTHER WILL BE NICE. A NEW X FILES SERIES WILL BE A HIT...SOMEBODY FROM FOX, BRAVO, CBS TAKE A NOTE.

Ok, we've got the movie sequel finally. Now how about a relaunch of a second generation X-Files tv show. Just shorten the name...call it "X", bring in a new team of FBI agents with a new storyline. Bring back Skinner to be the bridge between the old and the new. If Star Trek can have 5 different tv shows, certainly the X-Files can have 2. With all the garbage on the tube a new X would be very welcome.

cool!!!!! hope to see it here in the Philippines, please please FOX!

THIS IS JUST SO EXCITING!!!
A couple of my friends and I can't wait to see it on a wintry July night in OZ!

...our requests to Chris & Frank...
1) kisses should be kisses, and NOT split into two irrelavent parts!
2) no bulky shoulder pads nor very loose fitting clothes for Dana
3) let Dana wear nice pumps, not those chunky ones that look a la Spice Girls... just some slender kitten heels would do the trick!

Only 6 months of anticipation!!!

Emily Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

This has been the best news I've heard a long while. Whoop whoop finally, XFiles is coming back. It's been to long of a time with no spooky mulder, or scully. Can't wait for the film.

Anusha Fri, Dec 28, 2007 at 04:18 AM EST

Thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!
i love to see Mulder & Scully again.

Cory Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 04:50 AM EST

I am really happy that the best show ever created may make a resurgence with this new movie. I really love everything about the series and liked the fact that it ended with questions, that lead me to believe that we would see the show comeback. Again I am reallly happy to see the X files back in business.

Tina Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

Can't wait. Glad to hear of the stand alone, not much for the conspiracy stuff. Loved the Alligator episode, 'There be monsters' my favourite episode.

Sammy038 Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

Thank you Fox and Chris Carter for bringing back my favorite show of all time! I very much look forward to the second movie I loved the first!

PeteR Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 08:29 PM EST

First the Spice Girls reunited and now Mulder & Scully. My 90's are alive again.

Carlisle Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:57 PM EST

Like Craig, I was never a fan of the show. But the movie totally rocked! any title suggestions?

marc manspeaker Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:48 PM EST

It was a great production. I can't wait to view it when it comes back on. However, I was so feed up with CSI, and other television shows that I literaly picked my television up and took it to the trash dumpster.

I want them to continue on the mythology. They just can't leave it at the series end and go onto a stand-alone. Maybe they really are continuing with the alien conspiracy and trying to give fans' expectations down by releasing some vague & false synopsis

Dana Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

Oh Yeah! I too can not wait to see that fox Fox Mulder again! Finally...

Craig (West Hollywood, CA) Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

I was never a big X-FILES fan until I saw the outstanding first movie. I love it, and I can't wait for the second.

Rick Whatley Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

I have read recent comments regarding the so-called "downhill" trend of seasons 7-9. I emphatically disagree with this assessment. In fact, season 7 produced some of the finest episodes of the series (e.g. "Theef"; "Signs and Wonders"). Furthermore, the introduction of new characters in seasons 8 and 9 was an heroic attempt to compensate for the monumental loss of Mr. Duckovny. Check them out for yourself rather than jumping on the bandwagon of cynics.

zoe Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

Please keep Mulder and Scully together with their child. The movie does't have to be based around it...but like THE MUMMY's second movie, it was great to see a happy family, but scary film.

mark Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

thank you God!!!!!

midas Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

Love the X-Files there has been a vacant hole in television since the show has been off. C'mon summer 08

counchgrouch Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

I always thought they should revisit the werewolf ep from the 1st season. this world needs a good werewolf movie.

lebeau Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

I love X-Files - it's my favorite show of ALL TIME!!!!! I am a very happy man now.

al Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

ITS ABOUT TIME. THIS WILL BE ON THE TOP OF MY LIST OF FILMS TO SEE NEXT SUMMER. I MISS THE SHOW AND I MISS THE CHARACTORS. CANT WAIT.

Paul Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Hallelujah!! Finally, the wait is over. Great idea to make it a stand-alone story and skip the mythology. This should be awesome. C'mon July!!

TESS MARTINEZ Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

WOW... I LOVE X-FILES - THE GREAT NEWS THANKS...I WILL BE COUNTING THE DAYS.

Milagro1121 Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

I am so looking forward to this!! I just really hope Mulder and Scully are still like together together. I don't want a bee scene like in the first movie :)

pai Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Great that they're avoiding the way convoluted mythology. They can focus on the charms of Mulder and Scully and how well they play off each other.

PaulP Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

"It will be scary"?!? I'm so there!!

Alan Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

I think the real mysetry is: are Jager and katlou the same poster?

Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

My family and I were just talking the other night about a sequel X-Files movie. We live in Germany and don't get very decent television. We have been watching our "X-Files" DVD's over and over again. WE LOVE X-FILES!!! Thanks for the GREAT NEWS!

Alan Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

the real mystery for me is: Are Jager and Katlou the same poster?

mammabrisson Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Let me tell you i have loved that show from the moment it aired and there is nothing better then sitting down with a hot cup of coffee and having an x files marathon. I love there is another movie and I will be counting down the days :)

chris roberts Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

I have mixed feelings on this.Monsters of the week never held my Intrest the way the conspiracy did.Only seeing Mulder and Scully again Is giving me any hope on this.My hope Is a non Alien related COnspiracy Is involved, and I sure would like to know how they plan on doing a stand alone story with the way the series ended.

Eve Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

If there's no Krycek, I ain't going.

trevor Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

I'm so glad to hear there's going to be another movie. It's been a long wait. Ive also watched too many Lost episodes to fill the x-files void.

Smiley Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Is our big, bald, beautiful Walter Skinner going to be in the new movie? All his adoring wenches want to know.

Matt Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

I am fine with them focusing on a stand alone mystery and not the mythology of the show. But I hope they atleast explain how Mulder and Scully went from being on the run from the government to whatever they are doing now.

zorg Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

Welcome back, Mulder and Scully! An X-Files movie with a story of its own is something I've wanted to see ever since the series started.

Leslie Farmer Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

This is wonderful news for many years I have thought what happened? Because there have been many other shows that have made a come back why not bring back X Files... X File fans are excited!!!!! Thank You Chris Carter and everyone @ Fox....

Jeff Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

Let's offer up suggestions for the title via this forum??? Let the fans decide the title! How COOL!

Justin Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 10:34 AM EST

Bring back Frank Black!

TheBestDayEver Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

First I read about Eliza Dushku & Joss Whedon reuniting for a TV show, and now more Scully & Mulder on the big screen?! I think I might swoon!

Jack Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

Please, NO Reyes or Doggett! PLEASE!!!

Jessica Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 10:07 AM EST

WHOO HOOOO!!!! Bring on the summer of 2008!

Dr. Quest Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!

And may I say, it's about time?

RjL Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

Next up, the Millennium movie please?

Kevin Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

I hope they just do a purely stand-alone episode. Don't try to explain what Mulder and Scully have been up to for the past couple of years, don't try to fill in any blanks--just give us our 2 favorite FBI agents, throw in some weird goings-on, maybe some Cher karaoke, a couple of circus freaks, and call it a hit.

Marie Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 08:55 AM EST

Fine with me as long as it doesn't take Duchovny away from Californication!

Michael Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 08:45 AM EST

shoot, does this mean i have to actually watch seasons 7-9? yeesh.

Mells Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 08:16 AM EST

YOOHOO!!!

Even the Stupdendous Yappi couldn't have predicted this one! Can't wait to see Mulder and Scully on the big screen again!!!

Snarf Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 07:07 AM EST

Mixed feelings on this. On the one - YAY. On the other, uh about 7 years too late. Thoughts?

Carter Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 05:17 AM EST

This is the best news ive heard in a long time. But Chris please...dont do the whlole ambiguous relationship. That was then this is now, time to move on and actually be direct about their relationship, whatever that may be.

dee Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 04:58 AM EST

I am so thrilled to hear this long awaited news! I had given up hope of ever seeing a sequel and I've really missed Mulder and Skully since the show ended. X-files rocks!!

Bear Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 12:09 AM EST

BerlinParis Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

Best news to greet me after another dismal day at work!!! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

dan jones Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 10:25 PM EST

mixed emotions. i like the idea of a stand-alone story for the movie. on the other hand, i was so disappointed in how they wrapped up the mythology stuff on the show, i'd kind of like to that stuff get a fuller resolution. Either way, i'll probably be seeing this.

jen Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

I am so glad to see this news. I know exactly what I will be doing July 25 2008. With out a doubt I will be there.

amanda Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 10:10 PM EST

Can't wait to see XF2! Luv Scully and Mulder.

Robbie Reality at your service... Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 10:04 PM EST

Andrew, you and I very well know you're dying to see it. And I have to say, you're quite pessimistic. You're looking at the downside to this equation...but you're still looking at the equation....you know what I'm sayin?

BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!

webster Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 08:14 PM EST

Oh my! I can´t wait to see my beloved David Duchovny playing the most indelible character in the TV´s history, Fox Mulder. (besides Hank Moody, of course)lol

Jager Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

You guys rock!!!! Thanks for the info. I've been dying to see Gillian, er, I mean the sequel for years now..

J. Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:59 PM EST

I glad to hear that they're moving away from the mythology aspect of the show. Creature-of-Week episodes were far better than the plodding mythology. The Great Mutato is the greatest episode!

Andrew Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

Oh no. Spotnitz writing with Carter? They ruined "The X-Files" television series with their "everything's okay as long as we love each other" non-ending -- I haven't watched an episode since. "Night Stalker" was ruined by a vague mythology and open-ended story-telling (what DID happen in that pilot episode?). Now an "X-Files" stand-alone feature film? I have my doubts -- but without a mythology, Carter and Spotnitz might know what they're trying to say and even be able to communicate it. I'll wait for the reviews.

Jennifer Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST

Hell yeah!

CRAZYTAIS Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

IT IS ABOUT TIME!

Space Disc Jockey Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

AWESOME!!! X-Files was one of my favorite TV shows (even though the last few seasons/series finale was disappointing).

I enjoyed the X-Files movie and I'm intersted to see this non-alien sequel will be about. Apparently, from what I've heard, we should not expect ANY aliens or the continuing of the secret organization, etc.

I welcome change and welcome even more that Mulder/Scully will now star in X-Files movies. This is so cool!

I'm sure Carter/Spotniz will not disappoint with this story. If this more of a "restart" for the franchise, I'm all for it.

The truth is indeed, outthere...

katlou Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

You guys rock!!!! Thanks for the info. I've been dying to see David, er, I mean the sequel for years now....
