Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas defends open letter to radio jocks

Rob_l It's not often that you see a successful band actually acknowledge the backroom dealings that go on between radio stations and record companies. You know, the whole "your band better show us the love or see your spins go bye-bye" tactic that many mainstream formats employ. Well, Matchbox Twenty claim they're being played like that, and they are mad as hell and they're not gonna take it anymore!

After having to cancel an in-studio appearance on Charlotte, NC, radio station WLNK due to illness (singer Rob Thomas suffered a violent bout of food poisoning) and then hearing the afternoon jocks rant about how the band dissed them by not showing, Thomas went on the offensive, penning an open letter to The Matt and Ramona Show, calling them out for "blackmail," disrespecting their audience, and wrongly assuming that a liner notes thank you to Matt Serletic, the band's longtime producer, and his wife Ramona was intended for them. (Snap!)

In an open letter of their own, Matt and Ramona claim that they were well aware that the thank you was intended for Serletic and say that Thomas misinterpreted their "rant," which was meant in jest. "No ill will here, even though we've been accused of blackmail (we still find his use of that word a bit humorous)," Matt and Ramona told Hollywood Insider via email. Not surprisingly, the station has decided to make the most of the "controversy" by touting a "Matchbox 20 vs. Matt & Ramona" page on its website and posting the audio clips.

So now that it's all out in the open, how does Thomas feel about it? "Better than ever," he said backstage at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre on Friday night. "I think they’ve offered for us to go back and apologize — off the air and maybe they'll tape it — but Paul [Doucette, Matchbox guitarist] and I had to tell [Atlantic Records], 'You just don't understand. We don't want a relationship with them now.' It's not like we're trying to figure out how to make it work. Our way to make it work is, 'Don't play our music anymore.'"

Thomas' main gripe is that the station's grievances were aired, well, on the air. "These kind of things are usually done under the board," he said. "You don't do something [you're booked for], the radio station will call your record company and say, 'Listen, we're not gonna play your records if you're not gonna help us out.' And I was already reworking my schedule to take a 5:30 a.m. flight one day to fit them in, but it came out on the air and they were really mean. Why would we ever go to a station that talked about us that way?"

Matt and Romana told Hollywood Insider that Thomas' letter has resulted in threats from Matchbox Twenty fans and boycott letters to the station's affiliates and advertisers, but that "we're always willing to talk or hug it out." They added, "At first we thought [Thomas] had simply been misinformed about the nature of our fun, wise-cracking show. We tried to make it clear that we didn't insult his fans and even put one of his defenders on the air."

Plz try to understand public choice for your better performance

natasha Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 07:19 PM EST

omg! its not his fault that he got ill. i mean, how would he know it was bad food and he would get sick. hes a singer not a fortune teller saying IM GONNA GET FOOD POISONING. so just b nice.

as reading responses you should know that freedom of speech is a fundamental right but not an absolute freedom. If your words or actions are so hateful as to cause a negative response they are not protected by law. I am not defending Rob Thomas but read something about a death threat. If someone taunts you to the point of making a death threat their actions or speech is not protected by law and it would not be considered terroristic threatening. When your famous, regardless if your a singer, actor, writer, DJ, etc... you must act responsibly and not use your fame to harm others. If you have a personal problem with someone you don't bring it to work. Very unprofessional and actually illegal if your harassing or harming the individual in any way.

kiertasha Sun, Jun 22, 2008 at 02:12 AM EST

you are all retarded. Rob Thomas is a frickin awesome singer and it is not his fault he got food poisoning and couldn't get on the radio you guys have no taste in true music
LAMOS!!!!

Charlotte, NC Sat, Feb 23, 2008 at 03:21 AM EST

Rob Thomas is lame. I was a fan, but no longer in good conscience. I was listening to Matt and Ramona that day, I heard the whole story. They made light of the situation and they had time to fill. Most of the time was given to callers, but they did explain what had transpired. The fact is that at the time MB20 was supposed to be at WLNK, they were actually at WNKS performing. They did not miss M&R due to illness, as RT was well enough to be performing at the time he was supposed to be at WLNK, he was just somewhere else. The management, on thier own, or at the direction of MB20 called and lied about why MB20 would not make it. They should have been honest, it is much easier to understand not getting to everyone, than a lie. This was bad enough, but Rob cannot see the need to apologize, or even let it drop. He has bash M&R on other stations and on the interent and in interviews. He even gave a tongue in cheek dedication to M&R at the Charlotte concert. Grow up Rob, apologize

Everyone needs to get off of Rob. So what he couldnt be at a radio station cause he was sick!! he didnt just not show up! he was ill!!!! Rob thomas is a talented artist. And i love him. KEEP ROCKIN ROB!!! THE CONCERT WAS GREAT IN FAIRFAX AND NORFOLK VA!!!!!!

Amy Tue, Nov 6, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

Boo-freaking-hoo, Rob Thomas. Your team did not explain the situation clearly and a radio station joked around about it. Grow a thicker skin. If you had gone on the show and explained, I'm CERTAIN Matt and Ramona would have understood and apologized (even though their comments were largely joking to begin with!). As it is, you had a temper tantrum and got the crazies involved. Way to resolve the situation in a mature manner.

I can't believe someone has been in the limelight for so long and is still so (overly) sensitive.

Tim Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

The worst part of this is that Matt & Ramona are being misquoted and lied on! Rob, take the heat, admit you cancelled their show then went on to Lowes Motor Speedway, and drop it!

Ron Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 07:27 PM EST

you know I have heard every time that Matt& Ramona talk about this and was even listening when the whole cancelation thing went down and was pretty ticked that Thomas didnt show up too. later while talking to a freind i was informed that during this time Thomas was "too sick to go on the air" he was actually on the air on another station and later i saw them play at a kinda private event and he was well enough to go on there. i think the " too sick to play" thing was just an excuse for missing their commitments. If they had called and said " we are behind schedual" it would still suck but oh well that hapens but to sayt you cant go on but you are on elseware is just lying. I hate liars so I wont listen to them anymore.

Kathy Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

Rob needs to grow up. Poor baby, did his little feelings get hurt by some little radio people? Life sucks.

MG Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

If Rob Thomas truly had food poisoning he would not have been able to be on another radio show at the same time he was scheduled to be on Matt and Ramona. He just needs to suck it up and and say he's sorry and quit trying to get publicity by dragging this out. Grow up!!

Gudrun Thu, Nov 1, 2007 at 08:47 AM EST

Lots of people posting here, encouraged by the Matt & Ramona website, hmmm?

Well, I actually did take the time to listen to their podcast.

If someone runs out of schedule because he's ill he should not need to justify himself at all. If I had food poisoning I would probably have cancelled all of the events instead of trying to make as many as I could. Running out of schedule does not mean cancel that event, the band was ready to make up with the station and find a new date, but due to the DJs bashing them and making fun of their fans on air this was no longer possible.

I'm proud to be fan of a band that actually cares about their fans!

teresa Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

Has anyone at EW ever actually HEARD the Matt & Romona show? Well, I have and will remain a fan of the show. I think that little Robby needs to grow up. If he was going to make it up to the talk show, why then didn't someone from his management team call the radio station and say that? I guess it kinda got put on the back burner while he was singing and making merry at another performance. Oh, wait--he had food poisoning. He couldn't make any appearances.

ME Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

I am loving all the support for Matt & Ramona! When RT first posted his open letter on his myspace page, all his fans were petting his already overblown ego. AND whoever maintains his page has been deleting the most damaging comments against him! LOSERS! I have just one MB20 cd - and that is about to get trashed, then never again will I think of, or listen to either RT or MB! What a whiny, narcissistic little brat!
GO MATT & RAMONA AND WLNK!!!

Beth Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

Rob, put your big boy pants on and apologize! If I know food poisoning like I think I know food poisoning, there was no way you could have made it to any appearance. You made your decision, lied about it and got caught. Apologize and move on like a real man would.

Megan Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

Someone call the waaaaahmbulance--Rob Thomas needs a pick up.

Kasper Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

HOW FUNNY IS THIS!! I listen to Matt & Ramona DAILY- they were making fun of it all. Maybe if Matchbox 20 didnt overbook things wouldve turned out different. Rob didnt look too sick at the KISS 95.1 meet and greet- and sounded great too-- so what is the excuse now Rob???

Lena Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

Much LOVE for Matt & Ramona. None for Rob and his lame crew.

ceecee Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

Day off at work for meet & greet... few hundred dollars.
Listening audience bored w/RT's lame excuses and endless rants... worthless.
Matt & Ramona being right AND getting all the attention... PRICELESS!

Jrh Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 09:03 AM EST

Rob Thomas seems to be acting very childish. The truth about why he cancelled an appearance was all that was necessary. Matt and Ramona are great and have a huge audience. Maybe not as big as MB20 but they are getting some national recognition! We love you M & R !!

Candy L Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 08:51 AM EST

Rob Thomas should have been truthful in the first place and just let Matt & Ramona know that he had a scheduling conflict.
I am so sad to see this trend of people practicing bad behavior and not taking responsibilty for their actions when they are wrong. A simple "I am sorry" would have stopped this whole issue dead in its tracks.

kelly pervine Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 08:25 AM EST

How old is rob? I think he needs to pack up his toys and run home to mommy, like the 4 year old he acts like. I know 2 things - I will continue to listen to Matt and Ramona and buy from their sponsors. AND I will no longer listen/buy anything Matchbox 20.
Keep up the great work M/R!!!

Amy Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 08:00 AM EST

Matchbox 20 music is overrated anyway. Who cares if the station stops playing it??

Bob Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 07:54 AM EST

Come on, Rob-- don't be such a big cry baby!! Are you THAT desperate for media attention that you'll intentionally distort the truth? Matchbox20 hasn't been on my playlist in years, and needless to say, you've now dropped just below Milli Vanilli. GROW UP, big baby!

Amy Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Like Rob, EW has it all wrong. To maintain your credibility as a magazine, you should listen to the tapes of Matt and Ramona's show; by doing so, you would realize the importance validating the information you receive. Being famous (the famous one here is Rob Thomas) does not give someone credibility. I have lost all respect for Thomas and Matchbox 20.

Henry Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

Rob needs to be happy that anyone at all cares about what he is doing anymore. When was the last time Matchbox was relevant? 1997?

mb64970 Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

Rob needs to get a life. Granted this is great exposure for Mattman & Ramona, but the threats have got to stop. I was listening the day MB20 didn't show up, and I have listened every day since then. It's RIDICULOUS what those crazed MB20 fans are saying to M&R. The whold thing has nothing to do with the cancellation of the appt., it has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that it was done only 10 minutes prior to when they were supposed to be there AND it was blamed on the "food poisoning". If you are well enough to go to other stations, you were well enough to go to WLNK!

Stephanie Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

Ok... I was defending matt & ramona, now I'm just tired of them. They shouldnt be telling their listeners that MB20 chose another station over theirs and calling him a tool, ect. Its getting old. GROW UP! You keep complaining about him, but ya'll are coming off worse than he is now. Its just sickening.

Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 02:32 PM EST

Wow. Who knew Rob Thomas was such an attention whore?

Dana Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

I was one of those winners who was supposed to meet Rob Thomas and Paul that day. I am a huge Matchbox Twenty fan, and although I still love their music, now I'm rethinking the fascination with them. Who knew such a little thing was going to get blown way out of proportion. Rob and Paul did play another station at the same time they were supposed to be at WLNK. The whole thing is that either the band or their management team lied to WLNK. If they had just been upfront and said, "hey, we are running late". . then fine. I could have not left work early, and the station would have known what to do. And for the record, if they cared so much about their fans, then why haven't I heard from them with some type of reconciliation?

SomeCheeseforyourwhine Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

RT needs to grow up and stop whining about this. The whole incident is the fault of his management, so who should be penning the poison to??

Grow up Mr. Thomas. Remember the bigger they are the harder they fall ~ you've already fallen with me.

Lori Williams Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

This'feud' would end if Rob Thomas would take the 20 minutes to listen to the actual show from the date he was supposed to be on air with them. Matt and Ramona's only real complaint was that his mngmt team only said he couldn't make the show because of food poisoning. If they had said, 'He's trying to get through another station's meet and greet, but can't do anymore afterwards, none of this would have happened. When they heard he was performing for another station at the exact time he was supposed to be on their show, they were rightfully annoyed. Their mngmnt didn't mention the other station. Both stations had touted MB 20's visit for the week prior, and it looked like they were mistakenly overbooked, and tried to weasel their way out of admitting to a scheduling mistake. Rob Thomas needs to listen to the first interview he did with Matt and Ramona a few years ago. They all go along great! Matt and Ramona were truly hurt he didn't make their show. R.T. needs to grow up.

Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

Rob Thomas is lame and should get his facts straight. Your fans are lame too and I'd be suing them for slander if it was me.

Phil Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 11:18 AM EST

Rob Thomas needs to remember that comments on the air is freedom of speech. I was also listening that day to Matt and Ramona and I didn't hear anything that was mean or threatening toward Matchbox 20. Now really Rob, this just makes you look small minded and silly when you react this way. There have been other on-air personalities who have hurt people. Remember the lady who died after drinking all the water? We need to remember incidents like that and quit dwelling on petty things.

Former Fan,

Phil

Scott Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

GROW UP Rob!!!!
I heard the funny show that day, it was in fun. I think Rob's star status has gone to his head BIG TIME. If he was so sick then why was he at 2 other stations in town near the same time on the air. I think press needs to get the real story out there. What a cry baby.

Amy Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 07:25 AM EST

This is a typical magazine not getting the real story and printing it. Rob Thomas had no idea what was said on air as is evident by his comments. He lied to the radio station. Grow UP Rob! and get the facts EW.

StepOutRob Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 01:40 AM EST

Rob Thomas needs to step out and say he does not approve of the death threats. He comes across so full of it. Paul Doucette (band member) trashed their own fans himself. Hope RT writes an open letter to him next. Rob has also trashed Scott Stapp for no reason in numerous interviews over the last few years. He's a big lousy hypocrite picking on little people because his ego is wounded. I have a hard time believing it's about the fans. He was friends with a woman who ran an animal shelter who is now passed away who routinely bashed his fans on his own website when her auctions did not raise as much funds as she hoped from fans. Where was SuperRob then? Seems you get away with bashing his fans if you are friends of his. If you are a talk radio host in Charlotte NC however I guess you are not allowed.

Jennifer Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 01:04 AM EST

This is really stupid.
Why is Rob continually talking about Matt and Ramona? They let it go, but he keeps dragging it out again. It is getting old.
And the fans are sending death threats to Matt, Ramona, and Bandy, and writing to advertisers... that is taking it too far!
I always thought Rob Thomas was a peaceful cool guy, but now he is coming across as a jerk.
Pretty lame behavior for a grown man.
