Jimmy Fallon: Got any plans in 2009?

Oct 5, 2007, 11:40 AM | by Lynette Rice

Categories: TV Biz

FallonIs the Conan O'Brien succession plan the worst-kept secret in town? A knowledgeable source familiar with the negotiations recently told EW what many in town already believe: that SNL vet Jimmy Fallon is the guy who'll replace Conan O'Brien when the latter takes over The Tonight Show in 2009. Several publications like Broadcasting & Cable have already reported it as a strong possibility, though NBC won't confirm other than acknowledging that Fallon is at the top of its "short list" (the comedian already signed a development deal with the network earlier this year). Alrighty then! If there are any unanswered questions left when it comes to late night, it involves Jay Leno and whether he'll take NBC up on its offer to stick around once O'Brien assumes his post. Speculation is rampant that Leno won't settle for the occasional primetime peacock special; maybe he'll bolt for another network like ABC and put Nightline out of business (or at least out of the 11:35 p.m. timeslot). One thing's for sure: this inevitable game of musical chairs could turn out to be even juicier than the Leno-Letterman saga chronicled in Bill Carter's 1996 tome The Late Shift. Stay tuned...

jimmy tries too hard to be like conan. physical comedy is just not him. he should find his own schtick and do some soul-searching to find his true comedic style...unless, of course, he doesn't have any, which i'm starting to believe the more i watch his show. he acts like a nervous kid, when he should be more seasoned from being on SNL and being in his 30s. he's nice but cheezy as hell, and i agree about the laughing at his own jokes. on top of that, he beams & congratulates himself whenever he does well in any of those lame games he plays with the guests. i think they should've picked chelsea handler. we need a woman in the lineup, and she's one of the funniest talk show hosts out there. her cutting edge humor is very well-suited for the late 12:30 block. vote for chelsea!

At first, I decided to give Jimmy a chance, because he seemed like a nice guy, and I hadn't seen any of his work before. Now I realize he might be funny when he does impersinations or such, but he is simply not suited to host late night shows. I don't mind so much that he laughs at his own jokes, because there are so many more things he does to ruin his show. His monologues are terrible because he has no transitions. His crappy attempt to coin the catchphrase "beer me!" totally failed. He acts like a complete fanboy to his guests during interviews. He always makes insincere comments such as "that's awesome!" or "you're just so talented and beautiful", which he repeates so often, they can no longer be taken seriously. He often stutters and stumbles over his own words. Jimmy Fallon is JUST NOT FUNNY.

jmmy fallon = huge loser/ tool bag/ homo/ friendless/ ugly POS!

hope ur show fails.

dave Tue, Jun 9, 2009 at 03:32 PM EST

I HATE THIS HOMO! I HOPE HE FAILS SO BAD!

YOU ARE NOT FUNNY YOU JACKASS!

gomakemeasandwich Sat, Jun 6, 2009 at 09:44 PM EST

I have to admit, I sometimes watch Jimmy Fallon just to laugh at how awful his show is. That's right, his show is so bad it's funny--maybe that was NBC's plan all along. Of course, that would have to mean that NBC had any type of plan in the first place.

I'm pretty sure the only people who like him are misguided women who think that "he's cute." I guess if your idea of cute is someone who looks like a retard (just look at the picture at the top), then Fallon does fit the bill. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's why Dane Cook has a career as well.

Now, I'm not saying that all women think that no talent tools are funny because they're "cute" instead of actually listening to the content--just many of them.

He is a hilarious and just a genuinely nice guy.

maj raja Sat, Jun 6, 2009 at 12:13 AM EST

I PRAY to God they don't let this fag take over the tonight show some day. I hate this guy, always have. I can't believe anyone would consider this guy for anything. He's sucked since birth from what I can tell. At least he gives hope to others who want to make it in show business. I can't even look at his face. If I was drunk in a bar, I would punch him without knowing him just by the sight of his face. I don't know what it is but I want to punch this guy every time I see him. I'm usually a pretty nice person, I just HATE Jimmy Fallon.

Tony Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 03:22 AM EST

Jimmy Fallon should do us a favor and blow his brains out. How did this douchebag get a late night show! The only thing that makes his show interesting is the Roots and the guests. He tries to be like Conan and Letterman. He just ain't funny.

LateNighter Sat, May 30, 2009 at 01:37 AM EST

The only good thing about Jimmy Fallon being on a late night talk show is that the rest of America and TV with movie producers will see just how UN-funny, UN-talented, and UN-likable this jerk really is. What a total cheeseball Fallon is. This should make Failin' Fallon disappear forever.....getting to the point of the "good thing" I spoke to in the first line. I tried to watch him many times and give him a chance for my attention on SNL....FAIL. Now this talk show.......MAJOR FAIL! All I can say is the guy must've "serviced" somebody well to even get an audition to be in front of a camera. What a tool!

But, I say all of that in love and deepest respect, of course.

natador Thu, May 28, 2009 at 03:28 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon is aweful...When is he gonna get fired? His monologues are so bad and he's just plain awkward in front of the camera.

Karen Thu, May 28, 2009 at 07:26 AM EST

Jeezzzz, Jimmy Fallon is AWFUL. He has to READ his monologue jokes, he is as stiff as a board and has no personality to speak of. Get rid of this guy. Bite the bullet on any contract and loose him, you have already lost me as an audience member. How did this guy get the job? He is not suited for this. Bad enough SNL can't do a joke without having to read the lines... now this... go away Jimmy.

ajl260 Wed, Apr 22, 2009 at 11:49 PM EST

I rarely watched SNL because of him now.... some genius at NBC gave this idiot a Late Night Show... What the hell? He sucks.

schlitz Mon, Apr 20, 2009 at 05:32 PM EST

I hope Jimmy Fallon gets cancer. Thats all I need 2 say.

jim Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 07:20 AM EST

Someone needs to sit this guy down...turn on the TiVo hit him over the head and tell him he is JUST NOT FUNNY....

LLPR Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 05:57 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon got standing ovation in Atlanta Saturday March 21 at the Alliance Theater Tony evening with actress Grace Baine, director Susan Booth and emcee Rob Cleveland along with Tom Sullivan. Roger Bobb from Tyler Perry studios auctioning a walk on role. Atlantans welcomed the late night NBC host. The laughter began with impressions of Jerry Seinfeld, hometown funny guy Jeff Foxworthy, Adam Sandler, Robin Wiliams, John Travolta, Justin Timberlake. He belted out funny tunes with his own rewrites to the lyrics of 80's top hits and got the crowd to laugh all the way to the bank that is the Alliance Theater Kids programs bank a success!! You can count Altanta wants him back next year "we love Jimmy Fallon!

Jimmy Fallon is 100% unfunny. Loser. But hey, lots of untalented dicks get ahead in Hollywood. So we can't blame Jimmy. I blame everybody.

Chris Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 12:23 AM EST

The only thing that would ever be considered funny in my opinion involving Jimmy Fallon, is if he got punk'd by Ashton Kutcher by him giving him a comedy award.. If comedy was a heathy baby, Jimmy Fallon would be the Sudden death syndrome.

mike night Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 04:30 AM EST

he is the most unfunny person on TV

Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Simple truth...You don't see people bashing Will Ferrel, Eddie Murphy, John Belushi, Bill Murray, Adam Sandler....etc....get the idea? There really IS something to Fallon SUCKING!

Jason Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 10:35 PM EST

This guy turned his back on his hometown! Believe NOTHING he says about Saugerties NY and his fondness for where he grew up...it;s all BS! He turned his back on his friends! Not many people I know have anything good to say about him...if he was a nice guy, maybe it would be different....if he was FUNNY, maybe it would be different...his sister is just as elitist as he is! Saugerties is NOT proud of him! GO AWAY JIMMY!

Jack Sat, Sep 13, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon = NOT FUNNY! I grew up w/ him and he wasn't funny then...not funny now. There are people out here w/ REAL talent...LOOK FOR THEM!!

james the giant Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 10:55 AM EST

Fallon is terrible. Not funny, laughs at his own "jokes", essentially the predecessor to another awful comedian (Dane cook) this is just more of NBC putting in their lackees rather than finding real talent. they blew it when they put in leno over letterman, and they're blowing it again. and nothing blows more than fallon

Jessica Tue, May 13, 2008 at 08:58 PM EST

Fallon is NOT Late Night host material. He's going to turn the whole thing CHEESEBALL.

ironmanofwar Tue, May 13, 2008 at 07:34 PM EST

ok john, i didn't have enough time to actually read everything you said and i don't think im going to need to, but the point is jimmy fallon's just not funny. maybe he is "zomg sexy" but it doesn't matter, because a show like late night can only be carried so far on good looks. (example? conan keeps the show going without 'em) and telling from all the hateful talk i hear going on about this guy, talk not just going on on the internet, people just dont think he's funny. i know girls who think hes delicious, but not funny. not at all. whats more conan doesnt seem to think so either. just watch late night with conan may 12. that one bit jimmy fallon does where he starts screaming and squeaking is just plain awkward, and you can tell from conan's tired out laugh that he thought so too. yeah, people are spiteful and they love tearing people apart. that however doesn't mean jimmy fallon's right for the job

Joshua Hernandez Tue, May 13, 2008 at 05:45 PM EST

The cast that took over SNL had no talent and is not funny *cough* Tina Fey-Jimmy Fallon. Well, at least I'll be able to go to bed an hour early in a year is Fallon takes over Late Night just like I stopped watching SNL when these sad clowns took over. And Tina Fey is the most overrated actress, if you can call her that, and unfunny writer in history.

and by the way... conan and leno are BORE-fest hosts. its the same 'ol boring crud every nite anyway, kiss celeb but and blah blah blah boring bits. jimmy is refreshing. artie lange from Howard's show should replace Leno, that'd be a great stick it to Jay.

P.S. Meant to say, _who_ besides McHale would be an idea to take the Late Show?

John Krazinksy Mon, May 12, 2008 at 05:03 AM EST

we all know that, and, more than ten years later, the Tonight Show is his. Besides SNL, if you like it, he's 1 for 1. Fallon, forget demographics, test audiences etc., which I don't get why you guys don't see it, is pitch perfect for the job. For the benefit of discussion, and the benefit of the doubt, besides Joel McHale, would you say, is perfect for the job? Let me know. Seriously. If you convince me, without attacking Jimmy Fallon out of sheer, well, spite and name calling, I can tell you now, I may have some pull in getting the 'better' pick on the show, so, well, we'll all be satisfied. Btw, the press conference for the official announcement (and no, this is not part of the ad blitz, obviously) is tomorrow/today, Monday the Twelfth. May. Two thousand and eight. As far as market research goes, let us know what you think. Who knows, you might just get your wish. Anyways. Quit yer bitchin' and find some more productive ways you spend your time. Best of luck.

John

Finally, I believe I have given you enough to think about/respond to here, if there's enough response, I'll post a link to page where the discussion can continue in a larger forum (and I can see my typos b4 I post them, *sic) and/or email for those who prefer to respond not publicly,.. Finally, Carson, it would seem, should logically move up in timeslot as Conan moves up. But Carson's ratings, and I've noticed no one's said a word about him (to take the show for himself i.e.(that is)), have not boosted him to the post so another must be found. The choice of Fallon is both logical and bold. Solid, known, reliable, and fresh, new, and enjoyable (if you don't hate him already) - look at the general response to him, people find him agreeable. Fallon's caricature of Carson in his MTV days, besides being spot on, only got old because Carson himself, in part, sold out. But that's the biz and I don't need to tell you folks that. Hopefully ending this in next post - Lorne picked Conan,

John Krazinsky Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:44 AM EST

has done, well, not yet countless movies, but (at least) two well-received pictures, the Drew Barrymore and Taxi. This first, was a success, overall, regardless of your preference/taste for Fallon, Barrymore, script, etc.. The latter, no one got when it came out, and then they, the critics, and everyone who hated it, realized what a bunch of idiots they were and figured out that it was a very clever film, look it up, it happened. Fallon fills in the timeslot between Conan and Carson, in 2009, perfectly. He's mainstream enough that everyone knows him. McHale is a cult favorite, but who knows him who doesn't get cable? He's young enough, Fallon, that he is in sync with the late night, up all night, college audience, a decade off, but younger than say, oh, I don't know, Leno, Letterman, Conan, even Carson I think, Ferguson, Kimmel, need I say more? Etc.. And, with the young net audience, that is why you're all hating on him. A generational 'co-peer' excels. "Boo.." (con't'd...)

Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:36 AM EST

to an ever-shrinking length of attention span audience. If you have any ideas, I'm sure Jay Leno would appreciate, let me know. As far as Conan, the guy single-handedly made himself in to a star on Late Night. NBC got rid of Leno for him. And oh yeah, his audience is everybody, and will only increase on the Tonight show. I can't think of enough ways to say it is the right move, so I'll move on. Who is Joel McHale. I mean, I know who the guy is and yes, since you love yourself so much Hollywood, we all love Talk Soup, but, with all due respect, who is this guy. Let's review. NBC, big network. Late Show, big show-big name. Joel McHale, does Talk Soup. Jimmy Fallon has a music video (that was a joke for fans on Fallon, but), Fallon: SNL alum, did what was thought impossible at the time, took the Sandler schtik to the next step, took the Weekend Update chair, _opposite_ Tina Fey, who, like her or not, was/is a heavy hitter (30 Rock anyone?) .. (continued, next post)

John Krazinsky Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:25 AM EST

beyond posting 'anonymous' rants on an already anonymous resource, I may feel the need to refer to a page dedicated to said topic, though feel free to go about your leisure. Of course if you know of such a page I'd respond there as you like. Anyways, NBC is getting ready, after the current political season, i.e. national presidential election, to move towards targeted on demand programing. They are bringing their heavy-hitter, Jay Leno, to said task. Stay tuned for more details. Television, as you all know, is in decline, as is overall readership in newspapers, radio, other 'standard', or, conventional media, magazines, etc., due, as you no doubt are aware, to the internet, dvrs, on-demand programing in general, satellite radio, podcasts, blogs, and god knows what else. So: NBC is programming for the future, i.e., again, on-demand, with Leno. Be prepared, for now you have been warned. This means countless hours trying to figure out how to appeal (cont'd in next post)

John Krazinsky Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:17 AM EST

(just noticed my typo, ppl, not peel..) he's cracking up because he's laughing at himself, despite how much joy in-and-of-itself that gives you ppl, uh, people, because that is part of the act, the joke, and if you people could just _get_ that, and give yourselves a little bit of break you might just realize/appreciate that and, well, frankly, get a clue. Ok, I could talk about Jimmy for two hours, but let's get to these other completely half-formed ideas. To give ya'lls (you all) a heads up, I'm a _way_-insider for NBC, no, really, but don't bother looking me up because, really, no, honestly, you will never find me. But I intend to give you, eh-hem, uh, 'guys' a heads-up on well, what's going on at NBC and the rest of the world, so pardon my streaming list of posts. I'm sure there's a more suitable forum for this discussion, a blog?, but I hasten to move to other things, so: if you feel the need to engage in further discussion on this (continued in next post)

John Krazinsky Mon, May 12, 2008 at 04:07 AM EST

Whewwwwwwwwwwh. Tisk tisk. Only 1000 characters to tell you ppl how _awfully_ wrong you are. Ok. Obviously not John Krazinsky here, but... 1st, Fallon imitates Sandler because it's a continuity thing for SNL. Duh. (Duh, as in, all of these comments should be self evident.) Two, he laughs during his own jokes because, despite the fact that you peel out of habit sneer at whatever comes before you, as you are, well, this is the hollywood insider, .com, hollywood-types, and therefore not equipped to judge _anything_ to come out of New York, and therefore, have 0 concept of anything having to do with improvisation, a-hem, he laughs (run-on sentence on purpose. pay attention) at his own jokes because, well, because besides the fact that they're funny, to people who can admit to laugh, it's part of the 'gig', i.e. act. He's not cracking up because he's incompetent, despite what you might think, (continued in next post)

Fallon is a total douchebag. I quit watching SNL cause of that tard.

I love the fact that all of these criticizing people make fallon look like he hasn't been in the game of comedy for as long as he has, I think the guy has a ton of potential and I think he would be amazing if he hosted his own late night show. How DARE you people be so ridiculously mean about this guy. He is hilarious. It's like you people saying if Will Ferrell hosted his own late night show that it would suck... thats total bull crap.

Jimmy Fallon is great. You just wait.

Tracy Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 03:40 PM EST

Everyone who bashes Jimmy Fallon is only jealous and wishes that they could get as many girls that he has flocking all over him. Jimmy Fallon is talented and can do any voice that he wants, he can immitate just about any celebrity out there. SNL is kind of boring whenever you don't have anyone cracking up in sketches, which is why he is SNL's greatest castmember ever. He made the show awesome and yet he tells Lorne to hire Andy Samberg whom his haters love. Funny.

"A knowledgeable source familiar with the negotiations recently told EW what many in town already believe: that SNL vet Jimmy Fallon is the guy who'll replace Conan O'Brien when the latter takes over The Tonight Show in 2009".

LOL. Is this a release put out by Fallon's agent? Does he still even have an agent? The only guy who stands a WORSE chance of taking over for O'Brien is Pauly Shore.

"...knowledgeable sources..what many in town already believe..."
What a crock of Hollywood hype.

I second third and fifth everyone else= Jimmy Fallon blows the big one. I don't want him to kill himself, I just want him to disappear. I have to change the channel when he comes on any re-run. I doubt Sandler would have missed out on a party in college to watch SNL- that says it all about Jimmy. He was and is a total no-talent boring geek. Fallon is the biggest wanker of all time. You suck Jimmy Fallooon- you're a douchebag- i hate you. If NBC hires him, I will boycott watching anuthing on the network out of fear his idiot face might appear and ruin my day.

Buffalo Bob Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 02:42 AM EST

Jimmy Fallon is not funny by a freakin' long stretch. How he has managed to keep a totally worthless career together for so long is just, well, mind-blowing. His movies are terrible. He's an Adam Sandler hack, which doesn't say much. Totally unoriginal garbage.

I'm tired of watching my parents late night shows! While I am not a fan of Jimmy Fallon (and I am not alone) I am looking forward to a little new blood in the evenings.

J Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

I'm not as virulently against JL as other here. But, the crowd that watch the Tonight Show are not looking for new talent. That's usually been an established person hosting there. Conan is too much a later-show person and well suited there. Give Letterman the deal he was robbed of and let Leno go elsewhere...maybe to the network Letterman would leave and then it's just tilted a bit!

Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel.. Joel..

Conan Blows Mon, Oct 8, 2007 at 09:36 AM EST

Does NBC think they are going to get big ratings with Conan? There is a big difference in the audience at 11:35. It is more than the up all night college students he appeals to now.

Jimmy Fallon is beautiful. I would love to see his smile and charm in that chair.

Angie Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

I love Jimmy Fallon.
He will do well

Jennie Christian Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

I don't hate Jimmy Fallon, but LOVE Amy's idea of Joel...that guy is a riot and "Talk Soup" surely helped launch a lot of other talent! Good answer!

This guy must be well-equipped to keep getting work, because he sure isn't doing it on talent. The absolute worst comedian/actor on the planet. He makes Joe Piscapo look great by comparison.

Rachel Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 10:36 AM EST

I second the vote for Joel McHale. That guys is awesome. I heard NBC might shelve his sitcom, so he might be available.

Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

I just saw his picture and it annoyed me. Whats up with this guy and his stupid grin. Then i saw all the comments and noticed im not the only one who hates this nerd. PLEASE JF, KILL YOURSELF!!! Do us all a favor!

Ron Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 01:09 AM EST

Great choice..

Katy K. Skinner Sun, Oct 7, 2007 at 12:47 AM EST

Yeah, Joel McHale. Nice idea.

Emily Sat, Oct 6, 2007 at 10:54 PM EST

Wait, I take that back - I second the Joel McHale motion!
